How to Make Money Blogging in 2026: 5 Realistic Revenue Models

A blog can make money through advertising, affiliate links, products or services, paid subscriptions, and coaching. None guarantees income: the right choice depends on what your readers need, whether they trust your recommendations, and the work you can reliably deliver. In 2026, the practical approach is to choose a model that fits your audience, understand its requirements, and avoid treating traffic or revenue as assured.

Compare the main ways blogs earn money

Model How revenue is generated What it asks of the blogger Important qualification
Advertising Advertisers pay for ad placements; income may depend on views or interactions. Make space available, either to advertisers directly or through an ad network. Ad prices and results vary; AdSense eligibility does not promise approval or earnings.
Affiliate marketing A merchant may pay commission when a referred reader buys under its program rules. Choose relevant recommendations, add useful editorial context, and disclose material connections. Commission rules vary by program. Amazon has its own disclosure requirements.
Products and services Readers pay for something the blogger sells or provides. Create the offer and handle delivery; physical goods can add inventory, shipping, and tax or duty work. Revenue depends on audience fit and the value delivered, not simply on publishing an offer.
Memberships and subscriptions Readers pay for ongoing content, resources, community, or access. Provide a continuing benefit and manage recurring payments and member expectations. Payment features may depend on the platform, supported country, and currency.
Coaching Clients pay for the blogger’s guidance or expertise. Offer a service the blogger can competently deliver and make time for clients. Potential demand depends on readers’ needs and the credibility of the offer.

Google’s overview of ways to make money blogging describes these as possible business models, not guaranteed outcomes.

Advertising: sell space directly or use a network

A blogger can negotiate ad placements with a business or let an advertising network sell available space. With AdSense, Google matches ads to content and visitors; advertisers bid for placements, and publisher earnings can vary with advertiser prices and ad interactions. Site characteristics, visitors, and ad demand all affect results. The official explanation of how AdSense works does not establish a typical blogger income figure, so a specific forecast cannot be inferred from it.

What AdSense requires

Google’s published AdSense eligibility requirements include original, high-quality content; compliance with program policies; access to the submitted site’s HTML; and an applicant aged 18 or older. A parent or guardian may apply for someone under 18. These checks are not a guarantee of approval or earnings, and the cited eligibility guidance does not establish a universal minimum traffic threshold.

Affiliate marketing: recommend selectively and disclose

An affiliate link takes a reader to a merchant or service. If the reader makes a qualifying purchase under that program’s rules, the blogger may earn a commission. The useful version of this model starts with the article’s subject and the reader’s problem: recommend only products or services that genuinely fit, explain why they are relevant, and make clear when a commercial relationship exists.

Amazon Associates requires a compliant disclosure with affiliate links and an Associate identification statement on the site. Its disclosure requirements give examples such as “(paid link),” “#ad,” or “#CommissionsEarned”; those examples are not a complete legal rule for every context or country. In the United States, the FTC’s endorsement guidance says material relationships should be obvious to readers, and warns that paid placement affecting editorial review content can be deceptive. Rules outside the U.S. may differ.

Products and services: build an offer readers value

A blog can support sales of the creator’s own physical or digital products, services, or coaching. Digital goods can be delivered electronically. Physical inventory brings additional fulfillment responsibilities, including storage, shipping, and possible tax or duty work. Before making an offer, identify a real audience need and consider whether you can create and deliver what you promise; publishing a product page alone does not establish demand.

Subscriptions and memberships: make the ongoing value clear

Recurring payments can suit readers who want continuing premium material, useful resources, a newsletter, community, or access to the creator. This model carries an ongoing obligation: subscribers need a clear understanding of what they receive and the blogger must be able to maintain it.

WordPress.com documents one-time and recurring payments, including monthly or yearly subscriptions and memberships, paid content, and newsletters. Its monetization guide, last reviewed September 3, 2026, says availability depends on supported countries and currencies. Check platform availability and payment terms for your location before building a plan around a particular feature.

Choose a model that fits the blog you can run

  • Start with the reader’s need. Ads monetize attention; affiliate links help readers evaluate third-party options; products and services solve a need directly; memberships offer continuing value; coaching provides individualized guidance.
  • Account for trust. Recommendations and paid placements can affect how readers interpret editorial content. Disclose relevant relationships clearly and keep commercial choices relevant to the article.
  • Count the work after publication. Ad placement and policy compliance, affiliate disclosures, product fulfillment, subscription delivery, and client time are different operating commitments.
  • Check eligibility and geography. Ad network requirements, platform payment support, program rules, and disclosure obligations are not interchangeable. Confirm the current rules that apply to your site and location.
  • Do not plan around an assumed income or traffic threshold. The cited official guidance gives no defensible typical blogger earnings figure, conversion rate, or universal traffic requirement. Treat income projections as uncertain unless they are grounded in your own results and stated assumptions.

There is no universal best monetization model. A useful choice is one your audience has reason to value and you can operate without undermining the trust that brought readers to the blog.
