Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To convert an SVG to a high-resolution PNG, render it at the pixel dimensions you need, keeping its aspect ratio. Use Inkscape for a straightforward export or rsvg-convert when you want to specify output dimensions or rasterization DPI. For print, calculate pixels from the intended print size and density; a larger DPI value by itself does not add detail to the vector artwork. After export, check the PNG’s dimensions, edges and transparency.
What “high resolution” means for an SVG export
An SVG stores vector shapes and other drawing instructions rather than a fixed grid of pixels. A PNG is raster: it has a specific width and height in pixels. That means an SVG can be rendered at different sizes, but the export is only as large as the pixel dimensions you choose.
Start with the use case. A web graphic needs enough pixels for its intended display size, while a print file needs enough pixels for its physical dimensions at the chosen print density. Exporting a small PNG and enlarging it later cannot recover detail lost during rasterization. It is usually better to return to the SVG and export again at the desired size.
Keep the SVG’s proportions
Unless you deliberately want to stretch or crop the artwork, preserve its aspect ratio. If your SVG is wider than it is tall, specifying both a maximum width and height should fit it within those bounds without distortion when the renderer is set to preserve proportions. Do not assume that two requested dimensions mean the output will have exactly those dimensions: a renderer may fit the image inside the box to preserve its ratio.

How to choose PNG dimensions and DPI
For screen use, choose the target pixel width or height based on the asset’s expected display size and the displays or layout it must support. If the target aspect ratio matches the SVG, derive the other dimension proportionally. For example, if an SVG is twice as wide as it is tall, an export 1,200 pixels wide should be about 600 pixels tall. The exact resulting size can vary with the SVG’s viewBox and the renderer’s handling of its bounds, so inspect the output.
For print, calculate the raster dimensions from the physical output size and the intended pixels per inch (PPI). The relationship is:
pixels = inches × pixels per inch
For example, a 6-inch-wide print at 300 pixels per inch needs a 1,800-pixel-wide raster image. This calculation tells you how many pixels to render; it does not mean the source artwork gains new detail when you raise the DPI setting. A high DPI label paired with an unsuitable physical size may still produce a PNG with the wrong pixel dimensions for the job.
When DPI matters
DPI matters when the renderer interprets SVG dimensions expressed in physical units, such as inches or millimeters, and uses a rasterization scale to turn them into pixels. The rsvg-convert manual documents 96 DPI as the default for physical units and supports overriding it with --dpi-x and --dpi-y. If your goal is a particular pixel width or height, explicit output dimensions are generally easier to reason about than relying on a DPI value alone.

inkscape --export-type="png" my_file.svg
This is a basic export, not a guarantee of a particular high-resolution size. To set explicit pixel dimensions or a DPI for your installed version, consult its current command-line reference: export options and behavior can depend on the version. The Inkscape command-line reference describes export width, height or DPI settings as ways to override the document’s stored export hint.
In the GUI, open the SVG and use the export controls to select the desired export area and output size, then save as PNG. Exact labels and layouts can vary by Inkscape version and operating system; use the controls in your installed build rather than relying on a path that may have changed. If exporting a specific object rather than the whole drawing, confirm that the export area is set to that object.
When this method fits
- Choose the GUI when you want to inspect the artwork and set export bounds visually.
- Choose the command line when you need a repeatable conversion in a script or build process.
- For exact sizing, check the installed version’s export options and verify the resulting PNG rather than assuming the basic command sets a particular resolution.
Convert with rsvg-convert
rsvg-convert can request output dimensions and preserve the SVG’s proportions. This example fits the input within a 1,024-by-768-pixel box:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
rsvg-convert --width=1024 --height=768 --keep-aspect-ratio input.svg > output.png
The output is PNG, and the aspect-ratio option avoids stretching the image to fill both dimensions. If the SVG’s proportions differ from the box, the rendered image can fit within it rather than filling every pixel in both directions. Specify just the width or just the height when that better expresses your target; check the resulting dimensions to confirm how your installed build handled the request.

For an SVG whose physical units should be rasterized at 300 DPI, the manual documents this form:
rsvg-convert --dpi-x=300 --dpi-y=300 input.svg > output.png
Use this when rasterization density for physical SVG dimensions is what you need. If a specific pixel size is the actual requirement, use dimension options and inspect the PNG instead of treating DPI as a substitute for pixel width and height.
Using ImageMagick: check which renderer it uses
ImageMagick can convert SVG files, but the rendering path matters. Its documentation says it uses Inkscape if available, otherwise RSVG, and then its internal renderer if neither is available. Those renderers can differ in how they handle SVG content, so an export that looks different from another tool is not necessarily a sizing mistake.
ImageMagick documents a default resolution of 96 DPI and warns that -size is ignored when it invokes the Inkscape renderer. Therefore, do not rely on -size alone to control output dimensions without first identifying the delegate actually in use. If you require exact sizing, verify the chosen renderer’s behavior and inspect the output file.

For a transparent background, ImageMagick documents using -background none. Transparency should be checked in the resulting PNG: an image viewer may display transparent pixels against a white or checkerboard backdrop, which is not itself evidence that the file has an opaque background.
Check the exported PNG
Before using or delivering the file, open it in an image editor or inspect its file properties. Confirm the pixel width and height against the requirement, and view it at its intended size. Look for clipped edges, unexpectedly small artwork, blurred or jagged curves, missing effects, and unwanted background color.
- Dimensions: confirm the actual pixel dimensions, not only the intended export setting.
- Aspect ratio: compare the rendered shape with the SVG to catch accidental stretching or cropping.
- Transparency: verify that transparent areas remain alpha-transparent if the output needs to sit over other content.
- Appearance: inspect small text, filters, embedded images and edges at a useful zoom level.
Complex SVGs can depend on fonts, embedded images, filters or other features that different renderers handle differently. The documented tools do not establish one renderer as best for every SVG feature. If appearance matters, compare the PNG against the source in the renderer you plan to use in production.

The PNG is too small
The export may have used the SVG’s stored size or a default rasterization scale rather than your intended pixel dimensions. Export again from the SVG with explicit width or height options supported by your renderer, then check the output file’s actual dimensions. Do not enlarge the already-exported PNG as a substitute.
The image looks stretched
The requested width and height may not match the source aspect ratio, and the export may not have preserved proportions. Enable aspect-ratio preservation where available, or specify only one dimension and let the other follow the source. Inspect the rendered shape before using the file.

The artwork is clipped or has unexpected margins
The export may include the whole page when you wanted a drawing or object, or use different bounds than expected. In Inkscape, select the appropriate export area in the GUI or consult the installed version’s command-line options for exporting a drawing or object. Re-export and verify all edges are present.
Transparency is missing
The selected tool or export settings may have placed a background behind the artwork. Use the transparency option appropriate to the renderer; ImageMagick documents -background none. Confirm alpha transparency in an editor or file inspector rather than judging only by the preview background.
Different tools produce different-looking PNGs
Renderer selection and SVG feature support can affect output. With ImageMagick, identify whether the installed delegate is Inkscape, RSVG or its internal renderer; its sizing behavior differs by delegate. For difficult files, try the renderer that best matches the intended application and inspect the output for fonts, filters and embedded assets.
The DPI setting did not produce the expected pixel dimensions
DPI is relevant to converting physical SVG units into pixels, but it is not a universal pixel-size command. Calculate the target raster dimensions from intended physical size and print density, then use explicit output width or height where appropriate. Check both the exported pixel dimensions and the intended physical print size.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert an SVG to PNG without losing vector quality?
A PNG is raster, so it cannot remain resolution-independent. Keep the SVG as the editable source and render a new PNG at the required pixel dimensions whenever you need a different size.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does a PNG with a high DPI value still look small?
DPI and pixel dimensions describe different things. Check the PNG’s actual width and height in pixels, then relate those dimensions to the physical print size you need.
