To cancel a Shopify store, sign in as the store owner and go to Settings > Plan. Choose Cancel plan for a paid plan or Cancel trial for a trial, then follow the prompts and confirm with your account password. Shopify says a paid store deactivates at the end of its current billing cycle—not immediately. If you want to return, consider Pause and Build instead.
Choose the right option before you cancel

Shopify describes deactivation as canceling the subscription at the end of the current billing cycle in its billing guidance. See its separate instructions for pausing a store and deactivating a store.

Cancel or deactivate from Shopify admin
- Sign in to Shopify as the store owner, then open Settings > Plan.
- Select Cancel trial if the store is on a trial, or Cancel plan if it has a paid plan.
- Review any alternatives Shopify offers, such as a downgrade or Pause and Build. Choose one only if it fits your plans.
- Review pending charges and domain arrangements before continuing; the checklist below covers what to check.
- Choose a cancellation reason and proceed through the confirmation prompts.
- Enter your account password and confirm. Shopify says it emails a confirmation of deactivation.
In the Shopify mobile app, sign in as the owner, open Settings, tap Plan, and follow the corresponding cancellation and confirmation choices. Interface wording can change, so use the current Plan page if a label differs. Shopify Plus stores need Shopify Support’s assistance to deactivate. Support cannot deactivate a store on the owner’s behalf for security reasons.
Complete these checks before deactivation
Save store data and theme files
Export the store information you may need, including relevant data as CSV files. If you purchased a theme, consider downloading a backup. A theme license applies to the store it was originally purchased for; Shopify Support may be able to help transfer a license to another store owned by the same merchant.

Resolve customer commitments
Review unfulfilled orders, refunds, gift cards, subscriptions, preorders, and other purchase arrangements. Export the gift-card CSV to identify outstanding balances. Deactivation does not necessarily remove obligations to customers.
Check pending charges and refunds
Pending app usage, transaction fees, shipping-label charges, and other outstanding balances may be charged when you cancel. Shopify says it will not issue a final invoice if it finds no outstanding charges. Shopify subscription-plan charges are non-refundable; do not count on a prorated refund for unused time. Cancel app subscriptions billed outside Shopify
Shopify uninstalls apps when a store is deactivated, but an app subscription billed directly by its provider may continue. Check with each provider and cancel those subscriptions separately. On Pause and Build, apps remain active unless you cancel them individually.
Handle domains separately
Canceling the store does not cancel domain renewal. If you want to keep a domain purchased through Shopify, transfer it to a third-party provider and check its renewal date. For a domain purchased elsewhere, manage auto-renewal with that provider. Shopify says its HSTS policy remains in effect on a transferred domain for 90 days after store deactivation.

Consider payments, disputes, and financial products
Pending Shopify Payments payouts may continue processing after closure, but you may no longer have admin access to address payout issues. Customers can still file chargebacks for earlier transactions; contesting one may require reactivating the store. Access to Shopify Balance, Capital, or Credit may also be restricted or lost during a pause or deactivation.

Shopify says store information is guaranteed for two years after deactivation, allowing the owner to reopen without rebuilding. That retention period is not the same as permanent deletion. If you request deletion of customer personal data, Shopify says it is deleted within 14 days after the request is completed. You can stop the deletion by contacting Shopify Support before that period passes; deletion cannot be reversed afterward. Details are in Shopify’s billing implications guidance.

If you cannot cancel the store
- You cannot see the cancellation option: Check that you are signed in as the store owner and open Settings > Plan. Staff access may not be sufficient.
- You have a Shopify Plus store: Contact Shopify Support for help with deactivation.
- You are on a trial: If you never selected a paid plan, Shopify says no additional action is needed when the trial ends. If you did select one, cancel or pause it manually to avoid charges.
- You have a domain or app charge: Store deactivation does not itself stop domain renewal, and provider-billed app subscriptions may continue. Handle each with the relevant provider.
