To convert HTML to PDF in C#, choose the Winnovative generation that matches your operating system and deployment model, install its matching package, create an HtmlToPdfConverter, and call the HTML-string or URL conversion method. Classic uses the Winnovative namespace and synchronous examples; PDF Next uses platform-specific packages, the Winnovative.Pdf.Next namespace, and documented asynchronous methods. Do not mix their packages, namespaces, runtime files, or renderer assumptions.
Choose Classic or PDF Next before writing code
Winnovative has two product generations. Your first decision is not an API call; it is the target operating system, CPU architecture, .NET target, and hosting model.
| Decision | Classic | PDF Next |
|---|---|---|
| Namespace and package family | Winnovative.HtmlToPdf; using Winnovative; |
Platform-specific Winnovative.Pdf.Next.HtmlToPdf.* packages; using Winnovative.Pdf.Next; |
| Documented platforms | The package listing describes Windows support. | Windows, Linux, and macOS options, including architecture-specific packages. |
| Rendering description | Use only the Classic behavior documented for the package you install. | Documentation describes a bundled Chromium engine with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, web fonts, and SVG support. |
| Async API | The reviewed package examples are synchronous. | Async variants follow the Task-based Asynchronous Pattern and accept optional cancellation tokens. |
| Deployment | NuGet is recommended for dependencies; the package layout includes a required wnvinternal.dat resource. |
Native runtime packages are platform-specific; Linux may require additional system dependencies. |
These are documented product distinctions, not a promise of browser-perfect output or a throughput benchmark. Render representative documents on the exact image and architecture you will deploy.
Install Winnovative Classic with NuGet
The NuGet Gallery listing reviewed for this article shows version 20.0.2 (last updated February 10, 2026). Package versions change, so check the listing before pinning a version. For the Classic .NET Standard assembly, Winnovative recommends NuGet because it brings the dependent assemblies into the project.

#1 Best Overall
dotnet add package Winnovative.HtmlToPdf --version 20.0.2
If you intentionally deploy assemblies manually, reproduce the package layout and include wnvinternal.dat. Missing that resource or a native dependency can produce failures only after deployment, so a clean publish-directory test is essential.
Convert an HTML string to PDF bytes
This is the smallest Classic conversion. The converter returns a byte array that you can save, stream, or post-process.
using Winnovative;
var converter = new HtmlToPdfConverter();
string html = "<h1>Hello, PDF</h1>";
byte[] pdfBytes = converter.ConvertHtml(html, null);
File.WriteAllBytes("output.pdf", pdfBytes);
In the vendor sample, the second argument is null for the base URL. If your HTML contains relative stylesheets, images, or fonts, provide an appropriate base URL instead and verify that every resource resolves from the machine doing the conversion. The reviewed package example establishes the argument position but does not define a universal resource-resolution recipe.
Use a complete document for predictable input
using Winnovative;
var html = @"<!doctype html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset='utf-8'>
<style>body { font-family: sans-serif; }</style>
</head>
<body>
<h1>Invoice</h1>
<p>Generated from an HTML string.</p>
</body>
</html>";
var converter = new HtmlToPdfConverter();
byte[] bytes = converter.ConvertHtml(html, null);
await File.WriteAllBytesAsync("invoice.pdf", bytes);
Convert a web URL directly to a PDF file
For a publicly reachable page, Classic provides a URL-to-file method:
using Winnovative;
var converter = new HtmlToPdfConverter();
converter.ConvertUrlToFile("https://example.com", "page.pdf");
The deployed server must be able to reach the URL. Check redirects, authentication, robots or bot challenges, external CSS and font requests, and any network policy in your hosting environment. A page that works in your desktop browser may not be reachable from a production container.
Rank #2
Return the PDF from ASP.NET Core
Convert to bytes and return an application/pdf response. The following controller action uses the same Classic API:
using Microsoft.AspNetCore.Mvc;
using Winnovative;
[ApiController]
[Route("pdf")]
public class PdfController : ControllerBase
{
[HttpGet("invoice")]
public IActionResult DownloadPdf()
{
var converter = new HtmlToPdfConverter();
byte[] pdfBytes = converter.ConvertHtml("<h1>Invoice</h1>", null);
return File(pdfBytes, "application/pdf", "invoice.pdf");
}
}
In a real endpoint, validate or generate the HTML on the server, cap input size, and map conversion failures to an appropriate error response. Do not expose arbitrary URL conversion to untrusted callers without authorization and network controls.
PDF Next: select the runtime package and use async conversion
PDF Next is a separate generation. Install the package for the operating system and architecture you actually deploy, then use the Winnovative.Pdf.Next namespace. Its documentation describes a bundled Chromium renderer and asynchronous method variants with optional cancellation tokens.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsusing Winnovative.Pdf.Next;
var converter = new HtmlToPdfConverter();
// Use the PDF Next HTML-string async method supplied by the package version you install.
// Pass your HTML, base URL (when required), and an optional CancellationToken.
// Save or return the resulting PDF bytes according to that package's API.
PDF Next method overloads and package names are platform-specific. Follow the API reference that ships with the selected package instead of copying a Classic signature into a PDF Next project. Async support helps you integrate cancellation and avoid blocking an ASP.NET request thread; it is not a documented guarantee of unlimited parallel conversions. Bound concurrent work and measure your own documents.
Linux and container deployment
PDF Next supports Linux, but Winnovative notes that system dependencies can vary by distribution and version. Build and test the exact container or VM image used in production, follow Winnovative’s publish guidance, and verify that native runtime files are present after dotnet publish. A local Windows success does not validate a Linux deployment.
Resource loading, layout, and security checks
Relative assets and fonts
- Give HTML strings a meaningful base URL when they reference relative paths.
- Confirm that the converter process can resolve HTTPS certificates, DNS, and outbound requests.
- Package or host fonts deliberately; compare output on the deployment OS rather than assuming desktop fonts exist.
JavaScript and page readiness
Client-rendered pages may need an application-specific readiness strategy. Ensure data is present before conversion and test pages that use delayed API calls, authentication, or redirects. The reviewed material does not establish one universal wait setting, so do not assume that a page rendered in an interactive browser will be identical in a converter.
PDF layout controls
Validate page size, margins, headers and footers, print CSS, image scaling, and page-break rules with representative long documents. Keep these settings in one place in your application so a product-generation migration does not silently carry incompatible options.
Untrusted input
Treat HTML and URLs supplied by users as hostile input. Apply authentication, input-size limits, URL allowlists, outbound network restrictions, and time limits. Avoid allowing arbitrary internal URLs, which can turn a conversion endpoint into a server-side request forgery path.
Classic and PDF Next deployment checklist
- Record the generation, .NET target, OS, CPU architecture, and hosting model.
- Install the matching package; for Classic, prefer NuGet unless you have a deliberate manual-deployment plan.
- Publish to a clean directory and verify all managed, native, and resource files, including
wnvinternal.datfor Classic. - Convert both an inline HTML fixture and a URL fixture from the real deployment environment.
- Test relative assets, web fonts, JavaScript-driven content, long tables, page breaks, and non-ASCII text.
- For PDF Next on Linux, install and document the distribution-specific system dependencies.
- Set bounded concurrency and cancellation for web workloads; collect conversion duration and failure details.
- Review the current evaluation and license terms for the intended deployment before shipping. The NuGet listing summarizes a free evaluation and perpetual licenses for a product version with first-year maintenance, but that summary is not legal advice.
Troubleshooting common failures
“The type or namespace name Winnovative cannot be found”
You may have installed a PDF Next package while using a Classic sample, or vice versa. Check the package family and change both the namespace and API to match that generation.
Conversion works locally but fails after publish
Inspect the publish directory for missing native files or wnvinternal.dat in a Classic deployment. For PDF Next Linux images, install the required distribution-specific system libraries and test inside the final image.

Images, CSS, or fonts are missing
Relative URLs commonly lack a usable base URL. Set the base URL for HTML-string conversion, verify outbound access and credentials, and use absolute or packaged assets where appropriate.

Requests time out or consume too many resources
Use bounded concurrency, cancellation where the selected PDF Next API exposes it, input limits, and per-request time budgets. Do not infer safe throughput from the existence of an async method; the reviewed documentation contains no concurrency benchmark.
Output differs between Classic and PDF Next
They are different generations with different documented rendering engines and runtimes. Keep a golden PDF fixture for each supported generation, and re-approve layout when migrating rather than assuming pixel equivalence.

If your requirement is a clean image or PDF of a web page rather than server-side HTML-to-PDF rendering, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets, and lets you turn those steps off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the Classic namespace with PDF Next?
No. Classic uses Winnovative.HtmlToPdf and Winnovative; PDF Next uses its own Winnovative.Pdf.Next package family and namespace.
Does an async PDF Next method prove conversions are faster?
No. Async methods support non-blocking integration and cancellation; the reviewed documentation provides no throughput benchmark.
Where should I verify the current Classic package version?
Check the Winnovative.HtmlToPdf entry in the NuGet Gallery immediately before installation, because package versions and metadata can change.
Is Winnovative conversion identical to Chrome printing?
The reviewed material does not establish pixel-perfect browser parity. Validate your own HTML, assets, fonts, and page-break rules on the target runtime.
