Semrush is the closest broad paid-suite alternative; Google Search Console is the essential free source for your own Google performance; and Screaming Frog SEO Spider is the specialist choice for technical crawling. Other products—including Similarweb, Moz Pro, Mangools, seoClarity, Clearscope, Surfer and Google Keyword Planner—fit narrower market-intelligence, enterprise, content or keyword-research jobs.
Compare the workflow first, then check limits, data coverage and total cost. A low starting price can become expensive once you add tracked sites, keywords, seats, historical data or extra modules.
What counts as an Ahrefs alternative?
“Alternative” describes several different jobs rather than one universal replacement. Ahrefs combines keyword and backlink research, competitor analysis, rank tracking, site auditing and content research. A substitute may instead cover only one of those areas—or solve a different need such as owned-site reporting or content optimization.
- Broad SEO competitor research: discover keywords, backlinks, rankings and competing domains.
- Owned-site performance: measure queries, clicks, impressions and Google positions for sites you control.
- Technical auditing: crawl pages to find broken links, duplicate content, metadata problems and structured-data issues.
- Market intelligence: estimate audience, channels and competitors beyond search-console data.
- Content optimization: improve briefs and on-page coverage for target topics.
- AI-search visibility: monitor how brands or pages appear in emerging AI result experiences.
Decide which job is primary before comparing plans. No source reviewed establishes a provider-wide performance winner, and no hands-on test supports ranking one service as universally best.
#1 Best Overall
Best broad paid alternative: Semrush
Semrush is the strongest like-for-like option when you want one paid platform for keyword research, competitor analysis, position tracking, site auditing and AI-search visibility. Its SEO plan displayed $139 per month, or $117.33 per month when billed annually, on September 30, 2026. The displayed plan included monitoring for five websites and 500 keywords tracked daily.
Those figures are a dated vendor price and allowance, not a permanent market benchmark. Confirm the current amount, quotas, package name and billing terms before subscribing. Semrush exposes site and tracked-keyword limits across plans, so estimate your actual portfolio rather than comparing only the headline monthly price.
Rank #2
Choose Semrush when
- You need competitor and keyword research alongside rank tracking and technical audits.
- You want one interface for several SEO workflows instead of separate specialist tools.
- AI-search visibility is part of your measurement plan.
- Your team can work within the selected plan’s tracked-site, keyword, user and export limits.
Check before buying
- Number of websites, keywords, locations and devices you must track.
- Refresh cadence and historical-data access for the markets you serve.
- Report exports, seats, integrations and any module costs outside the core plan.
- Whether the AI-visibility features cover the engines and prompts relevant to your brand.
Best free complement for your own site: Google Search Console
Google Search Console is the first-party choice for measuring a website’s performance in Google Search. It reports queries, clicks, impressions and average position, and provides sitemap submission, indexing reports, issue alerts and URL Inspection.
Its scope is your verified property. It does not provide a full competitor keyword or backlink database, so it complements rather than replaces Ahrefs for competitive research. Use it as the authoritative starting point for deciding which pages and queries need attention, then add a separate research or crawling tool when necessary.

Useful Search Console workflow
- Verify the correct domain or URL-prefix property.
- Open Performance to filter queries, pages, countries, devices and search appearance.
- Compare clicks, impressions, click-through rate and position over a defined date range.
- Use Indexing and URL Inspection to investigate excluded or recently changed pages.
- Submit or review sitemaps and act on issue alerts.
Best technical-crawl specialist: Screaming Frog SEO Spider
Screaming Frog SEO Spider is suited to technical audits rather than broad competitor intelligence. Its free version crawls up to 500 URLs, according to the vendor’s pricing page. A paid licence supports larger crawls and advanced features.
Documented functions include broken-link discovery, metadata review, duplicate-page discovery, structured-data checks and Search Console integration. It is therefore a practical companion to a keyword or backlink platform, not a full substitute for those databases.
Choose Screaming Frog when
- You need repeatable crawls of a site you own or manage.
- Technical issues—status codes, canonicals, metadata, duplication or structured data—are the immediate priority.
- Your site is small enough for the 500-URL free limit, or you are prepared to license larger crawls.
Other alternatives by specialist job
A 2026 Zapier roundup groups several products by narrower strengths. Treat these as candidates to evaluate, not proof of current feature parity, pricing or independent performance.
| Tool | Potential fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Similarweb | Market and competitor intelligence | Traffic-estimation coverage, geography, channels, history and export limits. |
| Moz Pro | General SEO workflows | Current keyword, link, crawl limits and plan pricing on the official site. |
| Mangools | Beginner-friendly keyword research and rank tracking | Tracked terms, locations, refresh rate, SERP history and competitor depth. |
| seoClarity | Enterprise SEO operations and reporting | Contract minimums, seats, integrations, workflow automation and enterprise support. |
| Clearscope | Content briefs and optimization | Editor features, report allowances, supported languages and publishing integrations. |
| Surfer | Content optimization workflows | Content-editor limits, templates, credits, integrations and AI features. |
| Google Keyword Planner | Keyword ideas and advertising-oriented volume estimates | Account requirements, volume granularity, location settings and its limits for organic competitor research. |
Vendor pages for some of these products can change frequently; verify current capabilities and prices directly before making a purchase.

How to choose without overpaying
- Name the primary decision. Is it finding competitor opportunities, reporting on your own site, fixing technical issues, planning content or measuring AI visibility?
- Separate owned-site from competitor data. Search Console is excellent for your verified properties but cannot substitute for competitor databases.
- Count usage, not just users. Record domains, tracked keywords, countries, devices, crawl URLs, seats, exports and projects.
- Check time coverage. Confirm historical depth, refresh cadence and whether local or mobile results are included.
- Price the complete stack. Include add-on modules, additional projects, API or export fees, extra seats and annual commitments.
- Run a representative validation. Before committing, use your own sites, target locations and reporting format to confirm that the data answers the decisions you actually make.
Practical combinations
Solo site owner
Start with Google Search Console for actual Google queries and indexing status. Add Screaming Frog if technical problems or crawls exceed what your CMS reports. Pay for a broad suite only when recurring competitor research justifies it.
Freelancer or small agency
Pair Search Console properties with a broad platform such as Semrush for prospect and competitor work, then use Screaming Frog for client-site audits. Match the Semrush plan to the number of monitored sites and daily terms rather than assuming the entry allowance will cover every client.
Enterprise SEO team
Evaluate enterprise-oriented options such as seoClarity alongside broad suites. Prioritize governance, historical data, integrations, API access, reporting scale, user permissions and support; a consumer plan’s headline price is not a meaningful enterprise comparison.
Content-led team
Use a keyword or market-intelligence source to set demand and competitive context, then assess Clearscope or Surfer for editorial optimization. These products address content production and do not replace technical crawling or first-party performance reporting.
Limits of the comparison
Prices, plan names, quotas and features change. The Semrush and Screaming Frog figures above were displayed on September 30, 2026, and should be rechecked immediately before publication or purchase. Ahrefs’ own page lists Lite, Standard, Advanced and Enterprise plans, but its displayed prices and usage limits are likewise volatile. No independent market statistic or provider performance ranking was established for this comparison.
