The simplest HTML photo viewer is a gallery of <img> elements arranged with CSS Grid, plus buttons that open the selected image in a native <dialog>. This approach stays responsive, works without a framework, and gives keyboard and screen-reader users a usable experience when you provide meaningful alternative text, focus management, and explicit controls.
Choose the viewer you actually need
Use an inline gallery when photos should remain part of the page and users do not need an overlay. Add a lightbox when a visitor should inspect one image at a larger size without leaving the gallery. The implementation below supports both: thumbnails remain inline, and a button opens the selected photo in a modal dialog.

1. Write semantic gallery HTML
The HTML Standard recommends an img element with src when there is one image resource. Give every informative photo useful alt text; use alt="" only when an image is decorative and conveys no information. Make each thumbnail a button so it is reachable and activatable with a keyboard.

2. Make the layout responsive with CSS
CSS Grid automatically changes the number of columns as the available width changes. The image itself stays within its cell, while object-fit keeps thumbnails visually consistent.

3. Open and close a native modal dialog
The native dialog element, opened with showModal(), makes the rest of the page inert, confines focus inside the modal, supports Escape dismissal, and returns focus to the invoking control when it still exists. Keep a visible close button anyway: not every user recognizes Escape, and touch users need an obvious action.

});Calling showModal() rather than changing a CSS class is important: it supplies the browser’s modal focus boundary and Escape behavior. The click handler closes only when the backdrop area itself is clicked, not when the image or controls are clicked.

4. Add previous and next controls
For a multi-photo viewer, add two buttons beside the close button and keep an index in JavaScript. Disable a direction at the ends, or wrap around if that is the behavior you want.

5. Serve the right image for each screen
When the same photo exists at several resolutions, use srcset and sizes. The browser can choose an appropriate file while parsing the HTML, instead of downloading one image and replacing it after JavaScript measures the viewport.

6. Accessibility checks before shipping
- Write an informative
altdescription for each meaningful photo, and an empty value for purely decorative imagery. - Ensure every thumbnail, close control, and navigation control is keyboard reachable and has a visible focus indicator.
- Give the dialog a useful accessible name through its heading or
aria-label. - Choose initial focus deliberately. The close button is a sensible default; use
autofocuswhen immediate interaction should start elsewhere. - Confirm Escape closes the modal and focus returns to the thumbnail that opened it.
- Keep the large image’s alternative text synchronized when the selection changes.
- Test at narrow widths, with browser zoom, and with images disabled or slow to load.
7. Troubleshooting common failures
The dialog does not open
Check that the script runs after the HTML exists (place it before </body> or use defer), that showModal() is called on the dialog element, and that the element is not already open. Calling showModal() twice without closing can throw an error; guard with if (!dialog.open).
Images are stretched or cropped
Use height: auto for the large image. Apply object-fit: cover only to thumbnails where a consistent crop is intentional. Check that the declared width and height reflect the source’s aspect ratio.
The wrong responsive file downloads
Recalculate sizes from the actual CSS width. A value that says the image is 25vw when it is really full width can make the browser select a file that is too small or too large.

Focus escapes or the background remains interactive
Use a native modal opened with showModal(), not a non-modal show() call or a manually styled div. Keep a close button inside the dialog and verify focus behavior in keyboard testing.
The large image flashes or shows stale content
Set the new src and alt together, clear them on the dialog’s close event, and consider a loading message if original files are large. A failed image request should have a visible fallback message rather than an unexplained empty box.
