SpyFu Review (2026): SEO and PPC Research, Pricing, Limits, and Accuracy

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SpyFu is useful for competitor-led SEO and Google Ads research, but its traffic, clicks, spend and ranking figures are estimates—not verified business results. It combines domain, keyword, organic-search and paid-search reports, with plans that differ substantially in exports, rank tracking, historical data, reporting, seats and API allowances. The pricing and plan information below is a dated snapshot from September 30, 2026; confirm the live checkout and account terms before subscribing.

What SpyFu does

SpyFu lets you start with a domain or keyword and investigate the search activity associated with it. Its domain overview is designed to surface organic rankings, paid keywords, estimated clicks and ad budgets, competitors, content signals and ad history. SpyFu describes its index as containing “7.2 trillion results across 152 million domains,” a vendor-stated scale that has not been independently audited here.

The service is best understood as a hypothesis-generation and prospecting tool. It can show patterns worth investigating, but it cannot prove a competitor’s revenue, conversion rate, profitability or exact advertising spend.

Core SEO workflows

Find overlapping and emerging competitors

Enter your domain to identify sites ranking for similar terms. SpyFu also presents ranking changes and emerging domains, which can help reveal competitors that are not obvious from your existing market list.

Investigate rankings and content opportunities

SEO reports include keyword rankings, rank history, backlink discovery and keyword click gains or losses. Use these reports to form a content brief, identify pages that gained visibility, or find terms where a competitor appears to be outperforming you. Treat the reported clicks and rankings as directional data and validate important findings in your own analytics and Search Console.

Study changes over time

Historical views can show how a domain’s organic keywords and rankings changed. SpyFu also lets users examine changes alongside Google algorithm updates, which is useful for generating explanations but does not establish that an update caused a particular gain or loss.

Core PPC competitor workflows

Discover paid keywords and estimated budgets

SpyFu lists keywords for which a domain is shown as buying Google search ads and provides estimated spend and click information. These figures can help prioritize terms for manual review, but they are not an advertiser’s account data.

Compare several advertisers

Multi-domain comparisons show shared paid keywords and trends in estimated budget, clicks and ad counts. This can reveal recurring themes and gaps in your own campaign structure.

Review ad history

Historical ad views provide examples of copy and offers that competitors have used. A long-running ad is an idea to investigate, not evidence that it is profitable or suitable for your audience. Recreate the underlying value proposition only after checking landing pages, compliance requirements, margins and conversion data.

Keyword research for SEO and PPC

SpyFu’s keyword tools provide related terms organized around intent, ranking history, mobile-versus-desktop information and recommendations about ad buying. A practical workflow is to separate terms into informational, commercial and transactional groups, then assess each group with first-party performance data before committing budget or production resources.

The keyword research page advertises “17 Years of history.” Other plan material refers to 10 years of historical data for eligible tiers, so historical depth depends on the report and subscription level. Confirm the exact coverage shown in your account.

How reliable are SpyFu’s numbers?

SpyFu labels traffic, clicks and spend as estimates. The official material reviewed for this article does not provide an independent accuracy study, controlled benchmark or comparison against first-party advertising and analytics accounts.

  • Use estimates to prioritize questions, not to forecast revenue.
  • Check important organic findings against Google Search Console, analytics and rank-tracking data you control.
  • Check paid-search assumptions against your own conversion rate, cost-per-click, impression-share and profitability data.
  • Expect differences caused by geography, device, date range, search personalization and SpyFu’s modeling.

SpyFu pricing and plan limits (September 30, 2026 snapshot)

Option Price shown Published limits and features
Free for Life $0/month Unlimited searches; 10 results in the listed search categories.
Basic $39/month monthly, or $33/month when billed annually ($399/year) 10,000 search-result rows; 10,000 export rows; 100 domain-overview PDFs; 250 sales leads/domain contacts; 5,000 weekly tracked keyword rankings.
Professional $79/month monthly, or $58/month when billed annually ($699/year) Unlimited search results and exports; unlimited overview PDFs; 500 sales leads/domain contacts; 15,000 weekly tracked keyword rankings; 50,000 top-list results; 10,000 API calls; custom-branded reporting.

The pricing page’s search-result title says “Starting at $29 a Month,” but its visible plan figures list $33 annual Basic and $39 monthly Basic. Use the visible figures as the dated snapshot and verify the live checkout price.

Plan-name and history discrepancies

A SpyFu Help Center pricing FAQ dated February 12, 2026 uses the labels Basic, Pro + AI and Team/Agency, rather than the pricing page’s Basic and Professional labels. That FAQ says Basic provides current snapshots, while Pro + AI and Team/Agency add historical information about domain spend, paid keywords, organic keywords and, in some cases, prior ads. It also describes RivalFlow AI in Pro + AI and additional seats in Team/Agency.

Because these labels and entitlements do not line up cleanly, do not assume that “Professional” on one page is identical to “Pro + AI” elsewhere. Confirm the plan name, historical coverage, seats and reporting features in the purchase flow.

API pricing and technical considerations

SpyFu’s developer documentation describes pay-as-you-go API billing by rows returned, with rates that vary by endpoint. It states that Pro + AI includes a $40 monthly API credit and Team/Agency includes $100; a separate Help Center article refers to a $5 monthly credit for a Pro-level subscription. This apparent discrepancy makes the live API documentation and your account terms the authority before budgeting.

  • API charges are driven by rows returned, not simply by the number of requests.
  • Monthly API credits do not roll over.
  • Estimate usage from the largest responses your integration may request, then add a buffer for retries and scheduled jobs.

Which plan fits which workflow?

Free tier

Use it for occasional discovery and to decide whether SpyFu’s interface and available reports fit your questions. The 10-result category limit makes it unsuitable for systematic research.

Basic

Basic suits an individual who needs recurring research, modest exports and weekly tracking within the published row and keyword limits. It is less suitable for large-scale prospecting or agency reporting.

Professional or the corresponding higher tier

The higher paid tier is aimed at teams that need unlimited search and export results, more tracked keywords, branded reports, larger lead lists and API capacity. Verify whether your account presents this as Professional, Pro + AI or another current label.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • One service covers organic SEO and paid-search competitor research.
  • Domain and keyword entry points support both broad discovery and focused investigations.
  • Ad history, rank history and competitor overlap encourage time-series analysis rather than a single snapshot.
  • Higher tiers add exports, rank tracking, branded reporting and API access for repeatable workflows.

Limitations

  • Core traffic, click, spend and ranking measures are modeled estimates.
  • There is no independent accuracy or usability benchmark established for this review.
  • Plan labels and historical-data descriptions differ between official pages.
  • Large research programs can encounter row, export, tracking or API limits depending on tier.

Who should consider SpyFu?

SpyFu is a reasonable fit for marketers, consultants and small-to-midsize teams that need competitor-informed keyword, content and ad hypotheses without assembling separate discovery tools. It is less suitable as a replacement for first-party analytics, advertising-platform reporting, financial forecasting or proof of competitor performance.
