Google’s Custom Search JSON API is no longer open to new customers. Existing customers can continue temporarily, but Google says they must move to an alternative by January 1, 2027. The API can return web or image results as JSON, including image dimensions, byte size, thumbnails and a link to the page containing each image. For a new image-search integration, evaluate a documented image API such as Brave’s, or use Google’s Vertex AI Search when your requirement is limited to as many as 50 domains. Neither option should be assumed to be a drop-in replacement without testing your own queries, metadata needs, rights workflow and budget.
This guide explains what still works, how to extract the useful behavior from an existing Google integration, how to compare alternatives, and how to plan a migration without silently changing search scope or image-handling obligations.
What “Google Image Search API” means today
Most developers searching for a Google Image Search API mean the Custom Search JSON API used with a configured Programmable Search Engine. A request supplies an API key, a search-engine identifier called cx, a query, and searchType=image. Google returns JSON rather than an HTML results page.
Google’s overview, updated February 18, 2026, says the API is closed to new customers. Existing customers have until January 1, 2027, to transition. That date is a migration deadline for current users, not an invitation to sign up for a new production account.

Legacy pricing and quota
For eligible existing customers, Google documents 100 free queries per day. Additional requests cost $5 per 1,000 queries, with a maximum of 10,000 queries per day. These terms apply to existing customers during the service’s discontinuation period; do not present them as a current offer for new projects.
What the API returns for image search
Image results use the same general result structure as web search, with image-specific metadata. The documented fields include:
link: the direct image URL returned by the search result.contextLink: the page associated with the image.image.widthandimage.height: reported image dimensions.image.byteSize: reported byte size.image.thumbnailLink,image.thumbnailWidthandimage.thumbnailHeight: thumbnail information.
Those fields are useful for building a gallery, rejecting files below a minimum size, or showing a “visit source page” link. They do not establish that an image is licensed for your intended use. Treat every result as a lead and verify copyright, privacy, trademark, model-release and commercial-use requirements separately.
Image-oriented filters
The reference documents image filters such as image size, type, file type, color, rights, safety and date restrictions. Your exact combination should be tested because filters can reduce recall, and a rights filter is not a legal warranty. Geographic and language parameters can also change results, so record them in your migration tests instead of relying on defaults.
Requirements for an existing Google integration
- API key: create or use the credential associated with your Google API project.
- Programmable Search Engine: configure the engine and record its
cxidentifier. - Image mode: send
searchType=image; omitting it requests ordinary web results. - Application controls: restrict the key by server IP or another appropriate control, keep it out of browser code, and monitor quota errors.
- Result handling: store the context page, not only the image URL, and design for missing thumbnails, redirects, hotlink blocking and disappearing images.
Because new customer enrollment is closed, these steps are mainly for maintaining a current deployment while you complete migration work.
Alternatives and when each fits
Vertex AI Search for a bounded collection
Google identifies Vertex AI Search as a favorable alternative when you need to search up to 50 domains. This is a domain-scoped architecture: you define the sites or content sources that matter and search that collection. It is a sensible fit for a retailer’s approved supplier sites, a publisher’s selected sources, or an internal catalog.
Google separately directs customers who need full-web search to contact Google about its full-web solution. The available description does not promise that Vertex AI Search is an equivalent image-search API, so confirm whether the image fields, filters, ranking controls and response format your application needs are actually available before committing.
Brave Image Search API
Brave maintains an official image-search API reference and is a concrete non-Google candidate for a proof of concept. The existence of a documented endpoint does not establish parity with Google on relevance, geographic coverage, rights metadata, uptime, rate limits or price. Treat it as a provider to evaluate, not as a proven drop-in replacement.

Keep the search layer replaceable
For a migration, isolate provider-specific code behind your own interface. Return an internal record such as {imageUrl, sourcePage, width, height, bytes, thumbnailUrl, provider}, then map Google, Brave or another service into that shape. Preserve the raw response for debugging, but keep provider names and query syntax out of the rest of your application.
Comparison framework before you choose
Run the same representative query set against each candidate. Include brand names, ambiguous terms, non-English queries, rare objects, adult-content edge cases and queries that should return no results. Record the following:
| Decision axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Search scope | Is the service limited to selected domains, or does it cover a broader web index? |
| Relevance and recall | Does it return the images your users expect, including uncommon and multilingual queries? |
| Metadata | Are context URLs, dimensions, byte size, thumbnails, file types and rights signals available? |
| Controls | Can you set safe-search, language, country, freshness, size, type or color filters? |
| Rights workflow | What evidence can you retain about source pages and usage restrictions? |
| Operations | What are the latency, rate-limit, error, caching and regional-behavior characteristics? |
| Cost | What is the recurring price at your actual query volume, including retries and pagination? |
This is a test plan, not a claim that one provider wins every category. The available product descriptions do not establish an independently measured performance leader.
Migration plan for a production application
1. Inventory Google-specific behavior
List every parameter your application sends, including cx, searchType, pagination, safe-search, country, language, date, image size and rights filters. Note which response fields are displayed, persisted or used for ranking.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
2. Freeze a golden query set
Save anonymized queries and expected properties rather than exact URLs. For example, a test may require at least five results, a minimum width, a non-empty context page and a thumbnail. This lets you compare providers without pretending that URLs remain stable.
3. Build an adapter
Normalize each provider into your internal result type. Preserve an explicit “unknown” value when a provider does not return a field; do not silently treat missing rights data as permission to reuse an image.
4. Test failure paths
Exercise quota exhaustion, authentication failures, empty result sets, malformed image URLs, provider timeouts, duplicate results and a context page that no longer exists. Add bounded retries with jitter only for transient errors; retries cannot fix a daily quota limit.
5. Run both providers during cutover
Shadow a percentage of production queries, compare field completeness and user-visible relevance, and log provider, query class, latency, status and cost. Remove query text or hash it if your privacy policy does not allow raw search logging.

Brave proof-of-concept request
Brave’s image-search API documentation should be treated as the authority for the current endpoint, required subscription header and response schema. A typical proof of concept sends the query in a GET request and reads the image-result array; map its fields into your internal result type instead of exposing Brave’s schema throughout your code. Confirm current terms, regional availability and pricing before production use.

“API not available” or enrollment blocked
New Google customers cannot open a new Custom Search JSON API account under the current policy. Keep an existing eligible integration running only as a transition measure and start an alternative evaluation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
HTTP 400 or missing results
Check that cx belongs to the configured Programmable Search Engine, that searchType=image is present, and that pagination values are valid. Remove filters one at a time to find an over-constrained query.
HTTP 403 or quota errors
Verify the key, API enablement, restrictions and daily quota. Existing-customer pricing and limits do not create extra capacity beyond the documented 10,000-query daily maximum.
Images display incorrectly
Use the context page and thumbnail fields defensively. A result can disappear, redirect, reject hotlinks or change dimensions after indexing. Downloading or rehosting an image creates additional rights and storage obligations.
Alternative quality looks worse
Check whether you changed search scope, country, language, safe-search or freshness. Compare matched queries and field completeness before deciding that ranking alone is responsible.

FAQ
Can I use Google’s old 100-query free allowance as a new developer?
No. The documented allowance is for eligible existing API customers during the transition period.
Is Vertex AI Search a full-web image-search replacement?
Not by the description available here. Google positions it for searching up to 50 domains and separately discusses a full-web solution.
Does an image-search result grant permission to reuse the image?
No. Search metadata helps you locate a source; permission must be verified with the rights holder or applicable license.
Frequently Asked Questions
How early should an existing Google API customer migrate?
Start with a representative query set and a provider adapter now, so relevance, rights handling and scope can be validated well before January 1, 2027.
Should a screenshot API be used to replace image search?
No. Screenshot APIs render pages; image-search APIs return indexed image results and metadata. Choose based on whether you need pixels from a URL or discovery across sources.
