Start with File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. That is the documented default location for images captured with Windows logo key + PrtScn. If that folder is empty, the image may have been saved by Snipping Tool somewhere else, copied only to the clipboard, stored in OneDrive, or written to a folder you selected. The steps below separate each capture method so you can find every saved copy without guessing.
First, identify how the screenshot was captured
Windows does not use one universal screenshot folder. The destination depends on the shortcut or app, whether the capture was saved as a file, and whether you changed a setting or chose a path in a Save dialog.
| Capture method | What normally happens | Where to look first |
|---|---|---|
| Windows logo key + PrtScn | Windows saves an image file automatically. | Pictures > Screenshots |
| Snipping Tool | The snip is copied into the app for editing and is automatically saved when automatic saving is enabled. Its folder and behavior can be changed. | Snipping Tool’s current Screenshots folder, then the location chosen with Save as |
| Print Screen alone | The capture is placed on the clipboard; no file has to be created. | Paste into an app, then save it yourself |
| OneDrive or a manually selected folder | The file may be outside your local Pictures folder. | Search the relevant drive, OneDrive, or photo library |
These distinctions matter: searching only C:Users<name>PicturesScreenshots cannot find an image that was never saved there.
Check Pictures > Screenshots first
- Press Windows logo key + E to open File Explorer.
- In the left navigation pane, select Pictures. If you do not see it, expand This PC, open your user folder, and then open Pictures.
- Open the Screenshots folder.
- Sort by Date modified to put the newest captures at the top. Switch to Large icons or Content view if you need visual thumbnails.
This is Microsoft’s documented route for captures made with Windows logo key + PrtScn on Windows 10 and Windows 11. A keyboard without a dedicated PrtScn key may use Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar instead; the exact key combination depends on the device.

If Pictures is redirected
Some PCs move known folders into OneDrive or another location. In File Explorer, right-click Pictures, choose Properties, and inspect the Location tab when it is available. Follow the current path shown there rather than assuming the folder is on the C: drive.
Use Snipping Tool’s current save location
Snipping Tool has its own save behavior. Microsoft states that a captured snip is automatically saved to its Screenshots folder, while also allowing the automatic-save behavior or default folder to be changed in the app’s Settings. A copy saved with a separate Save as action can be anywhere you selected.
- Open Start, type Snipping Tool, and launch the app.
- Capture a small test snip, or open a recent capture if it is still in the Snipping Tool window.
- Use the app’s Settings to check whether automatic saving is enabled and which default Screenshots folder is configured. The label can vary slightly between Windows updates.
- For a capture currently open in the editor, select the Save button or press Ctrl + S. Note the folder shown in the Save dialog; that is the actual destination for this copy.
- If you used Save as previously, search the folder you chose at that time. The filename may not follow the standard screenshot naming pattern.
Changing Snipping Tool’s default later does not tell you where older, manually saved copies went. Those files remain in the locations selected when they were saved.
Search the entire PC when the folder is empty
File Explorer can search from This PC across available drives, or from a particular folder or drive when you want narrower results. Windows Search can also return files from the PC and OneDrive. Results depend on indexed locations and the file types and locations configured for search, so a missing result is not proof that no file exists.

Broad search from This PC
- Open File Explorer and select This PC in the navigation pane.
- Click the search box in the upper-right corner.
- Try
screenshot, thenscreen clipping, or another distinctive word from the filename. - Wait for the search to finish. Use the result columns to sort by Date modified, Type, or Size.
- Open a result to verify it. Right-click it and choose Open file location to see the containing folder.
Searching from This PC is slower but covers more locations. If you know the drive or parent folder, select that location first to reduce noise and search time.
Search by image type
When a filename search fails, search for common image extensions such as *.png, *.jpg, or *.webp. Screenshots are often PNG files, but Snipping Tool and other applications can save JPEG or other formats. In File Explorer’s search box, enter one pattern at a time and then sort by date.
To narrow a large result set, add a date or size filter from the search options, or search inside likely folders such as Pictures, Desktop, Downloads, and Documents. A file saved through a browser or an editing app may use a generic name such as image.png rather than “Screenshot.”
When Windows Search returns nothing
- Confirm you started from This PC or the correct drive, not a single empty folder.
- Check that the file type you searched for matches the format used by the capture app.
- Search an unindexed folder directly in File Explorer; indexing affects speed and which locations Windows Search catalogs.
- Look for removable or disconnected drives that were not available when the search ran.
- Open the capture app and save a new test image, then search for that known file to verify the process.
Check whether the screenshot was saved at all
Print Screen by itself places a capture on the clipboard. The clipboard is temporary content, not a file in Pictures. Snipping Tool also copies a snip into its window so you can edit, save, or share it. If you closed the app without saving, there may be no image file to locate.

- Press Windows logo key + V to open clipboard history, if it is enabled, and look for the image.
- Open Paint or another image editor and press Ctrl + V.
- Save the pasted image with File > Save as, choose a known folder such as Pictures, and record the filename and format.
If clipboard history was disabled or cleared, an older clipboard-only capture may no longer be recoverable through Windows. In that case, repeat the capture and save it immediately.
Look in OneDrive Photos or Gallery when applicable
OneDrive’s Photos experience can display OneDrive photos and local PC photos. It can also let you add a local folder and open an item in File Explorer. This is an optional route, not a guaranteed index of every screenshot: what appears depends on your OneDrive account, synced content, and folders you have added.
- Open the OneDrive Photos or Gallery experience from Windows.
- Search or browse by the date the screenshot was taken.
- If the image is visible, use the option to open it in File Explorer and note its actual path.
- If a local screenshot folder is missing, add that folder to the photo view when the feature is available on your account and Windows edition.
Do not assume that a photo shown in OneDrive is stored locally; it may be online-only. Opening it in File Explorer or choosing an available download option confirms whether a local copy exists.
A repeatable “find every screenshot” checklist
- Open Pictures > Screenshots.
- Open Snipping Tool and inspect Settings for its automatic-save state and default folder.
- Check any folder used with Save as, especially Desktop, Downloads, Documents, or a project directory.
- Search from This PC for
screenshot, then for image extensions such as*.pngand*.jpg. - Search OneDrive and the OneDrive Photos/Gallery view if your captures are synchronized or a local folder has been added.
- If nothing appears, determine whether the capture was clipboard-only and paste/save it again.
Troubleshooting common cases
“PicturesScreenshots” does not exist
Create no replacement folder until you know which capture method you used. First check Snipping Tool’s Settings and save a test snip. If Windows logo key + PrtScn is working, Windows can create the folder when it saves a new capture; the location may also be redirected through your user-folder settings or OneDrive.

The screenshot appears briefly, then cannot be found
That usually indicates a clipboard or editor workflow rather than an automatically saved file. Paste the image into Paint or keep it open in Snipping Tool, then use Save or Save as and watch the destination shown by the dialog.
Search finds old files but not today’s capture
Sort by Date modified, confirm the current date and time on the PC, and search the folder where the app saved the test image. Indexing may delay broad Windows Search results; direct navigation to the known folder is a better immediate check.
You changed the Snipping Tool folder and lost track of older captures
The setting controls the current default. Older files saved manually remain in their original locations. Search from This PC by date and image type, then open each result’s file location to rebuild your own folder map.
The keyboard shortcut does nothing
Try the device’s hardware-specific combination, such as Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar on systems without PrtScn. You can also open Snipping Tool from Start and capture with its on-screen controls. Whether the shortcut works and where it saves are separate questions, so verify the resulting file path after a test capture.

If your goal is to obtain a clean screenshot of a website rather than recover an old Windows image, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts one request for a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—work with Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
The API supports full-page captures with lazy images, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture actions, hidden selectors, waits for selectors, delays or network idle, request and ad blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, usage data, and an OpenAPI specification. Common parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work when switching.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the complete option list. A basic cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is on every plan, and yearly billing provides two months free. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to begin.

For Windows logo key + PrtScn, begin at Pictures > Screenshots. For Snipping Tool, trust the app’s current Settings and the Save dialog rather than an assumed path. For Print Screen or an unsaved snip, look in the clipboard and save the image yourself. Finally, search from This PC and check OneDrive when files may have been redirected or synchronized.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Windows screenshot use the PNG format?
No. PNG is common, but Snipping Tool and other save workflows can produce JPEG, WebP, or another format. Search by more than one image extension when the filename search is inconclusive.
Why can a screenshot appear in OneDrive but not in my local folder?
OneDrive may be showing synchronized or online-only content, or a photo folder that was added to its Photos view. Open the item in File Explorer to confirm its local path and availability.
Is Windows Search guaranteed to find every screenshot?
No. Results depend on the locations indexed and the file types being searched. Search from This PC, inspect likely folders directly, and check disconnected or removable drives separately.
