What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To save a website’s original background image, inspect the element that displays it, read its applied background-image value, open the referenced resource, and save that resource—not a screenshot. The quickest route is a desktop browser’s built-in Developer Tools. If the image is added by JavaScript, use the runtime DOM and computed styles rather than the page’s original source.
What you are actually looking for
A visible picture may be an HTML <img>, a CSS background, an inline SVG, a data URL, or an image painted by script. A CSS background is attached to an element through the background-image property. The browser Inspector shows the page as it exists after scripts and styles have run, so it can differ from the HTML downloaded initially.
The procedure below targets the original image resource. Saving a screenshot produces a new rendering and may include text, overlays, or cropping that were not part of the source asset.
Step 1: Open Developer Tools
Use a desktop browser and open its developer tools. On Windows, common shortcuts are Ctrl+Shift+I or F12. On macOS, use ⌘+⌥+I. You can also open the tools from the browser menu.

Safari hides its developer tools until you enable the Develop menu in Safari’s settings. Once enabled, choose Develop → Show Web Inspector.
Step 2: Select the element that owns the background
- Activate the element picker (the pointer-in-a-box icon) in Developer Tools.
- Click the visible background area you want to identify.
- Read the selected node in the Elements or Inspector panel.
The first selected node may be an overlay, text wrapper, or pseudo-element instead of the image container. If so, inspect that node’s parents in the DOM tree. Common owners include a hero section, a full-page wrapper, body, and html. An overlay can also intercept your click; select the overlay and then move upward through its ancestors until the background rule appears.
Step 3: Find the applied background-image value
Use Rules or Styles to find the declaration
With the element selected, search the Rules/Styles pane for background-image. This view shows which selector and stylesheet supplied each declaration. A value such as url("/assets/hero.webp") identifies an image URL. The rule may be inherited through a class, an inline style, a media query, or a state such as hover.
Use Computed styles to see the final result
Open the Computed panel and locate background-image. Computed styles show the final value the browser applies after the cascade, inheritance, media queries, and overrides. If Rules contains several candidates, Computed tells you which result is active at the current viewport and state.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If Computed reports none, the selected node is not currently displaying a CSS image. Check its ancestors, the page root, pseudo-elements, and responsive rules. A broken or unavailable image URL can also result in a blank background, so an empty-looking area does not prove that no image was intended.
Step 4: Interpret URLs and layers
One image URL
A declaration such as background-image: url(https://example.com/photo.jpg) points directly to the resource. Relative references such as url(../images/photo.jpg) are resolved against the stylesheet’s URL, not necessarily the page address. Opening the resolved link in a new tab is the simplest way to verify it.

Several background layers
CSS permits comma-separated layers, for example url(texture.png), linear-gradient(...), url(photo.jpg). The first listed layer is closest to the viewer; later layers are behind it. A gradient may obscure part of an image, and a texture may be the item you actually want. Examine each URL and compare its preview with the rendered area.
Data URLs
Some sites embed the image as url(data:image/png;base64,...). There is no separate network file to open. Preserve the complete data URL, including its header, in a text file or use the browser’s built-in copy option where available. If the resulting file does not open, check that the entire value was copied without line breaks or truncation.
Step 5: Locate the loaded resource
Firefox
Firefox can preview an image directly from a background-image rule: hover over the rule in the Rules view. Its context menu also provides an option to copy the image as a data URL. Use the preview to distinguish the correct layer before copying or opening it.
Chrome and Chromium browsers
In Chrome, use Sources to browse loaded page resources and deployed stylesheets. Image resources can be previewed in the resource viewer. The Network panel is useful when the stylesheet is difficult to navigate: reload the page, filter requests by image type, and inspect candidates whose names or dimensions match the background.
Opening a resource from Sources or Network gives you the server response rather than the composited page. From that image view, use the browser’s Save image command and choose a filename and location.
Step 6: Save and verify the original file
- Open the matching resource in the browser’s image viewer.
- Confirm that its dimensions, crop, and visual content match the background.
- Use Save image as (or the equivalent browser command).
- Keep the extension that matches the response, such as
.png,.jpg, or.webp. - Open the saved file locally to confirm it is a valid image and not an HTML error page.
If the image viewer displays a redirect, authentication error, or access-denied response, the URL may require the page’s cookies, headers, or a logged-in session. Saving the rendered page as a screenshot will not recover the original asset in that situation.

When the URL is not visible on the clicked element
Check ancestors and the page root
Backgrounds are frequently attached to a containing section rather than the exact pixel you clicked. Walk up the DOM tree and inspect each candidate. Check body and html as well, especially for full-viewport artwork.
Compare Rules with Computed
Rules may show declarations that are overridden, disabled, or limited to another media query. Computed shows the active result. Resize the viewport or toggle responsive mode if the design changes at mobile breakpoints.
Use runtime markup when scripts modify the page
View Source shows the original server response. It may contain no background URL if JavaScript adds a class, injects a style block, or writes an inline value after load. Inspect the live DOM and applied CSS instead.
Inspect pseudo-elements
A decorative background may belong to ::before or ::after. In the Styles pane, enable the pseudo-element entry for the selected node and inspect its background-image rule.
How to choose among multiple candidates
- Visual match: preview each resource and compare the subject, crop, and colors.
- Element ownership: confirm which DOM element uses the declaration you found.
- Layer order: remember that the first listed background layer is in front.
- Loaded status: prefer a resource that appears as a successful request or opens as an image.
- Responsive state: check whether a media query swaps the asset at your current viewport.
Common problems and fixes
The picker selects the wrong element
An overlay, link, or transparent panel may be above the image. Inspect that node’s ancestors, then compare Computed styles. Selecting the parent in the DOM tree is often faster than trying to click an uncovered pixel.
There is no background-image declaration
The image may be an <img>, an SVG background, a pseudo-element, or a canvas drawing. Inspect nearby nodes and pseudo-elements. In Network, filter image requests and open likely candidates.

The value is none but the page appears to have an image
Check ancestors and responsive rules first. Then reload with Network open. A failed request, blocked resource, or script that has not finished can leave the computed value empty or the rendered area blank.
The URL is relative or returns 404
Open the stylesheet that contains the rule and resolve the path relative to that stylesheet’s directory. If the resulting request fails, the site may have stale CSS or a resource that is unavailable to your session.

The saved file is actually an HTML page
Open the response in a text editor or check its content type. Login pages, bot checks, and error documents can be returned at an image-looking URL. Save from the browser’s image viewer only after confirming that the response is an image.
The background changes after scrolling or interaction
Pause at the desired state, then inspect the element again. Lazy-loading scripts, hover states, carousels, and scroll-triggered classes can replace the URL. Capture the resource while that state is active.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I find a background image from a phone browser?
The precise Rules, Computed, Sources, and Network workflow is designed for desktop Developer Tools. On mobile, use a remote-debugging connection to a desktop browser or inspect the site from a desktop session.
Why does the saved image look different from the page?
CSS can crop, position, scale, blend, or layer an asset over gradients. The downloaded file is the source resource; the page’s appearance is the result of those CSS properties.
Is a data URL the same as a downloadable image file?
A data URL contains the image bytes inline. It can be retained as data directly, or decoded into a file if you preserve the complete MIME header and encoded content.
