Best WooCommerce Alternatives in 2026: How to Choose the Right Platform

The best WooCommerce alternative depends on whether you want a hosted service that handles infrastructure or a platform you can run and customize yourself. Shopify and BigCommerce are hosted ecommerce services; Wix and Squarespace combine site-building with hosted commerce; Adobe Commerce and PrestaShop are options for businesses willing to take on more technical work. Compare total operating cost, required features, control, and migration effort—not just the advertised plan price.

Start by choosing between hosted and self-hosted

This is the decision that most affects day-to-day work. Hosted services manage infrastructure for you; self-hosted software gives you more responsibility along with greater control.

Hosted ecommerce services

With a hosted service, the provider manages hosting, updates, and security as part of a recurring service. Shopify and BigCommerce are ecommerce-focused hosted options; Wix and Squarespace offer hosted websites with ecommerce features. This model suits merchants who prefer not to operate the underlying server environment, though the provider’s plan terms and available features still need to fit the store.

Self-hosted platforms

Self-hosted software runs on a server the business manages or rents. PrestaShop and Adobe Commerce are examples, as is WooCommerce itself. This approach can offer more control over design, functionality, and integrations, but the store owner is responsible for hosting, maintenance, and security, and may need technical or developer support.

Adobe Commerce is presented in Shopify’s guide as an enterprise-oriented option that requires technical expertise and third-party hosting. That characterization comes from a vendor-authored comparison, so verify fit and requirements with Adobe’s current documentation before deciding.

Shortlist alternatives by store needs

Platform Operating model Potential fit and trade-off
Shopify Hosted SaaS Consider it if you want the provider to manage hosting, updates, and security. Assess its recurring fees, processing costs, apps, and feature fit for your store.
BigCommerce Hosted SaaS Consider it if you need a broad set of commerce capabilities in a hosted service. Shopify’s guide describes it as feature-rich and potentially excessive for a small store; confirm the actual plan features you need.
Wix Hosted website builder with ecommerce Could suit basic ecommerce needs and a merchant who wants a site builder. Shopify’s guide cautions it may be too simple for moderate or large inventories, so check catalog limits and workflows.
Squarespace Hosted website builder with ecommerce Consider it when a hosted site-building approach is central to the project. Confirm current commerce features, integrations, and plan terms against your requirements.
PrestaShop Self-hosted Consider it if you want a self-managed platform and can handle hosting, maintenance, and security or have support for those tasks.
Adobe Commerce Self-hosted / third-party hosting Consider it for a technically capable, larger operation evaluating an enterprise-oriented platform. Validate implementation needs and hosting requirements with Adobe.

Shopify’s 2026 alternative guide also lists GoDaddy, Volusion, Amazon, and Shift4Shop. Those names widen the shortlist, but a listing is not proof that a platform matches a particular store. Check each provider’s current documentation for regional availability, features, and costs.

The descriptions in this shortlist draw on Shopify-authored material. Use them as prompts for evaluation, not as independent rankings or a substitute for checking vendors directly.

Compare total cost, not the headline fee

WooCommerce’s core platform is free and open source, with no monthly subscription or platform revenue share, according to its official pricing page. That does not make a store cost-free: merchants separately choose hosting, pay payment-processing fees, and may purchase extensions or implementation support.

WooCommerce estimates hosting at $25–$350 per month for most stores and extensions at $29–$299 per year per extension (official pricing page, accessed in 2026). These are the vendor’s estimates, not guaranteed quotes for a particular store.

For a meaningful comparison, estimate the costs you will actually incur on each platform:

  • Platform subscription or hosting and infrastructure
  • Payment processing and any transaction-related charges
  • Apps, extensions, or other paid functionality
  • Setup, migration, and developer or agency work
  • Ongoing maintenance, security, and support

A low monthly starting price can become a poor fit if required features depend on costly add-ons or extensive implementation. Conversely, paying for a managed service may be worthwhile if it reduces the technical work your team would otherwise own.

Check the capabilities your store actually needs

Make a requirements list before comparing feature pages. The right choice depends on the needs of your operation, not the longest feature checklist.

  • Catalog: Count products and variants, and note any complex catalog or inventory workflows.
  • Sales channels: Identify whether you need marketplaces, social channels, or in-person point of sale.
  • Business model: Determine whether subscriptions, B2B sales, or other specialized workflows are essential.
  • Markets: Check international selling requirements, including the regions and currencies relevant to your business.
  • Integrations: Confirm that your payment, shipping, accounting, marketing, and operational tools connect as needed.
  • Customization: Decide how much control you need over the storefront, functionality, and integrations—and who will build and maintain it.

Shopify’s enterprise comparison discusses areas including B2B, international selling, implementation, performance, and cost. Its comparisons are vendor-authored and include research it presents or commissioned; do not treat their comparative results as neutral consensus. Verify feature and price claims with the relevant vendors and underlying study details.

Account for migration and future operations

Switching platforms is not just a software purchase. It can involve implementation work and changes to the way a store is maintained. Before committing, identify what must move, which integrations need to be rebuilt or reconnected, and who will handle the transition. The amount of effort depends on the current store and the destination platform; the available comparisons do not establish a universal migration cost or timeline.

Also consider the next stage of the business. A platform that is simple to launch may become limiting if inventory, channels, or operational needs change; a more capable platform may bring complexity and expense the store does not yet need. Assess the likely direction of the business without paying for features that have no current use.

A practical decision rule

  • Choose a hosted service such as Shopify or BigCommerce if reducing responsibility for hosting, updates, and security is a priority and its total cost and feature set work for the store.
  • Consider Wix or Squarespace if a hosted website-builder approach fits the project, after checking catalog and commerce requirements against current plan details.
  • Consider PrestaShop or Adobe Commerce if self-hosting and deeper control are priorities and the business can support the technical responsibilities; Adobe Commerce is positioned toward larger, technically capable operations.
  • Stay with WooCommerce if its WordPress-based flexibility suits the business and separately managed hosting, processing, extensions, and maintenance are acceptable.

There is no universal winner. The right platform is the one whose operating model, total cost, required commerce capabilities, and maintenance burden fit the store you intend to run.
