Short answer: Windows 11’s built-in apps handle three different jobs. Snipping Tool can detect and redact email addresses and phone numbers with Text Actions > Quick redact. Photos can blur a photograph’s background with an adjustable brush. Microsoft’s current instructions do not document a general, exact-region blur tool for arbitrary screenshot text, so do not mistake either feature for a universal screenshot blur brush.
Use the workflow below according to what you need to hide, then inspect the saved image at full size before sharing. For highly sensitive information, treat blur as visual obscuring rather than a proven irreversible security method.

The distinction matters: automatic detection is convenient for known contact-data patterns, while a photo-background tool is designed to separate a subject from its surroundings. Neither should be presented as exact text redaction.
Redact email addresses and phone numbers with Snipping Tool
Microsoft documents Quick redact for detected email addresses and phone numbers. It is the fastest built-in route when those are the only sensitive items in your screenshot.

- Open the capture overlay. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. Microsoft describes this shortcut as opening the Snipping Tool overlay for an image snapshot. (Microsoft’s shortcut guidance)
- Select the area. Drag around the window, panel or desktop region you need. Complete the capture; the snip opens in Snipping Tool’s editor, where you can copy or save it.
- Run Text Actions. In the editor toolbar, select Text Actions. Snipping Tool analyzes the captured text and exposes the actions available for what it recognizes.
- Choose Quick redact. Apply Quick redact to detected email addresses or phone numbers. Check every occurrence; detection is limited to the categories Microsoft describes and should not be treated as a search for names, addresses, API keys, passwords or account numbers.
- Review at 100 percent. Zoom or open the image at its actual size. Look for partially covered characters, a second copy of the address, notifications, browser tabs and data outside the selected region.
- Save a separate copy. Use the save command in Snipping Tool rather than overwriting your original until you have confirmed the result. Keep the unredacted source private and share only the reviewed copy.
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions also provide an Edit > Edit with Paint handoff for sizing, color, text and other enhancements. The reviewed instructions do not establish that Paint includes a dedicated blur brush, so do not rely on an undocumented “blur selection” command.
When Quick redact is the wrong choice
- Your target is a name, street address, order number, chat message or password.
- The private content is embedded in a photograph or a graphic rather than recognized text.
- You need a fixed rectangle blurred regardless of what text it contains.
- The capture contains several sensitive regions and you cannot verify that detection found all of them.
In these cases, remove or cover the content with an editor that explicitly supports the operation you need. An opaque cover is easier to verify visually than a weak blur, but you still need to inspect the exported file and its dimensions.
Blur a photograph’s background in Photos
Windows 11’s Photos app has a Background blur edit for photographs. Microsoft describes automatic background selection and a brush for adjusting which area is affected. This is useful when the subject should remain clearer than the surroundings.
- Open the image in Photos.
- Choose the editing controls and select Background blur.
- Let Photos create its automatic subject/background selection.
- Use the brush controls to add to or subtract from the affected area where the automatic mask is inaccurate.
- Inspect hair, hands, screens and high-contrast edges at full size; these are common places for a selection boundary to need correction.
- Save the edited image as a copy, preserving the original until you have checked the export.
This feature is designed for photographic depth-style editing. It is not a promise that a sentence, browser field or arbitrary screenshot rectangle will be blurred precisely. For a screenshot containing a person’s photo plus text, treat the two tasks separately: use the appropriate text-redaction method for the text and the Photos background tool only for the photographic background.

How to handle an arbitrary screenshot region
The Microsoft pages reviewed for Windows 11 do not document a general-purpose exact-region blur workflow in Snipping Tool or Paint. That means there is no supported sequence you can safely describe as “select a rectangle, choose Blur, and export” using only those documented controls.
Safer practical choices
- Capture less in the first place. Return to Snipping Tool and draw a smaller selection that excludes the private panel.
- Hide before capture. Close a tab, minimize a notification, sign out of a test account or replace sample data before pressing Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- Use an editor with an explicit blur or pixelate feature. Confirm that the tool applies the effect to the exported bitmap, not merely as a temporary overlay.
- Use an opaque rectangle for publication graphics. This visibly removes the content, although it does not prove that the underlying pixels are cryptographically destroyed in every file format or workflow.
Do not publish a screenshot simply because text looks unreadable at thumbnail size. Open the final PNG, JPEG or WebP at 100 percent, check every layer or object if your editor uses them, and verify that no unedited duplicate remains outside the visible crop.
Verification checklist before sharing
- Open the exported file, not only the editor preview.
- Check the full image at actual size and at a larger zoom.
- Search visually for repeated email addresses, phone numbers, names, URLs, QR codes and notification previews.
- Check browser tabs, bookmarks, window borders and desktop widgets.
- Confirm that the file you attach is the edited copy and that its filename does not expose private information.
- For a highly sensitive record, prefer removing the data or recreating the screenshot with dummy values instead of relying only on blur.
Troubleshooting Windows 11 screenshot edits
Text Actions or Quick redact is missing
Make sure you are editing the snip in Snipping Tool, not viewing an image in another app. The feature also depends on the Snipping Tool version and the Windows installation available on your device. If the command still does not appear, crop or recapture to isolate clear text, then use an editor that explicitly supports redaction.
Quick redact missed private text
Microsoft documents the detector for email addresses and phone numbers only. It may not identify names, IDs, usernames, addresses or text rendered inside an image. Inspect manually and cover or remove every missed item.

The Photos blur affects the subject
Open the Background blur controls and adjust the brush mask. Work around edges at a high zoom, then save a copy and inspect the exported file. If the image is actually a software screenshot, use a screenshot-redaction workflow instead of treating it as a portrait.
The result looks blurred in the app but sharp after saving
Reopen the saved file. If the effect was a non-destructive preview, apply the edit and export again. Check that you are not sharing the original file or an earlier attachment.
The screenshot contains a CAPTCHA or a blocked page
Recapture only content you are authorized to access. A blur operation cannot make an unauthorized or incomplete capture reliable; fix the page state first, then edit the resulting image.

Local Windows editing
Snipping Tool and Photos avoid API charges and work well for one-off captures, but your result depends on the app version installed, the clarity of the source and your manual review. Saving multiple exports can also create confusion about which file is safe to share.

Automated capture
An API is useful when the same page or many URLs must be captured repeatedly. Use waits for dynamic content, selector-based capture when a full page contains secrets, and caching only when an older result is acceptable. For asynchronous jobs, verify webhook handling and retain the verdict and billing headers with your job record.
Privacy and access
Do not place credentials in a public URL. Use custom headers, cookies or authorization only for pages you are permitted to access, and limit signed-link exposure. Redact downloaded images before putting them in tickets, documentation or public storage.
