For a selected area, use Windows+Shift+S. Neither shortcut automatically captures an entire scrolling webpage; for that, use Microsoft Edge’s Screenshot tool or an automated screenshot service.
What Print Screen captures
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, a normal press of PrtScn captures the whole display and copies the image to the clipboard. It does not necessarily create a file immediately. Anything visible on the monitor—including the browser window, taskbar, notifications and other open windows—can appear in the capture.
The exact key label varies. It may read PrtSc, PrtScn, Print Screen or share a key with another function. On some Windows installations, the key is configured to open screen snipping instead of performing a plain clipboard capture.
Save a website screenshot with PrtScn
- Open the page. Navigate to the website and arrange the browser so the content you need is visible. Close menus, notifications or other windows that should not appear.
- Press PrtScn. Windows copies an image of the entire screen to the clipboard.
- Open an image-capable app. Paint is the simplest built-in option, but a document editor, email composer or graphics application also works.
- Paste the capture. Press Ctrl+V. The screenshot appears as an image in the destination app.
- Edit and save. Crop unwanted browser chrome, annotate the page if needed, then use the app’s Save or Export command. Choose PNG for sharp text and interface elements, or JPEG when a smaller photographic file is more important.
Because the first step places the image on the clipboard, pressing PrtScn again before pasting replaces the earlier capture. Paste or save each image before taking another one.

Capture only part of the browser window
Press Windows+Shift+S to open Windows’ screen-snipping interface. The screen dims and a toolbar presents capture modes. Drag around the webpage area you want; the resulting snip is copied to the clipboard and can be opened in Snipping Tool for editing and saving.
Available Snipping Tool modes
- Rectangular snip: Drag a rectangular selection around the target content.
- Freeform snip: Draw an irregular outline.
- Window snip: Select a complete application window, such as the browser.
- Full-screen snip: Capture all displays as a full-screen image.
After a snip, select the notification or open Snipping Tool to mark up, copy, share or save the image. This method is usually better than a full-screen capture when you need to omit the tab bar, address bar or taskbar.
When the Print Screen key opens snipping instead
Windows can be configured so that pressing PrtScn opens the screen-snipping overlay. If that happens, choose the rectangular, window, full-screen or freeform mode and make your selection. The behavior is not an error; it is a keyboard setting. If you specifically need the old whole-screen-to-clipboard workflow, open Windows Settings, search for the Print Screen setting, and turn off the option that uses the key to open screen snipping. The wording and location can vary between Windows versions.
Keyboard combinations for saved files and missing keys
Windows key + PrtScn
Windows+PrtScn is documented by Microsoft for supported Windows hardware. It captures the screen and saves the result in Pictures > Screenshots, rather than requiring a separate paste. Device behavior can vary, particularly on laptops with function-layer keys.

Fn + Windows key + Space Bar
On a device without a dedicated Print Screen key, Microsoft documents Fn+Windows+Space Bar as a possible screenshot shortcut. This is hardware-dependent, so it may not work on every keyboard. Check the laptop manufacturer’s key legend and try the combination while the desired page is visible.
On-screen keyboards and external keyboards
If a physical key is broken, Windows’ on-screen keyboard may provide a PrtScn button. A USB keyboard with a Print Screen key is another optional workaround, but extra hardware is not required when Snipping Tool or the hardware-specific shortcut works.
How to screenshot an entire scrolling webpage
A normal Print Screen capture stops at the current display. Scrolling farther down and taking multiple images produces separate screenshots, not one continuous page. If you need content below the fold in a single image, use a browser feature designed for full-page capture.
Microsoft Edge Screenshot
Microsoft Edge’s Screenshot feature can capture a selected area or a full webpage beyond the visible viewport. Open the browser’s Screenshot command, choose the full-page option when it is available, and then copy or save the resulting image. The precise menu, behavior and availability can vary by Edge version, device and market.

Full-page capture may need to load images and other content as the page is extended. Pages with infinite scrolling, animated sections, login gates or content that appears only after interaction may not produce the same result as the live page. Review the complete image before sharing it.
Why Print Screen is not a web-page printer
PrtScn records pixels currently displayed. It does not understand the document structure of a webpage and cannot automatically scroll through every section. For a printable document, use the browser’s print flow instead; for a visual image of the whole page, use Edge’s full-page Screenshot feature or an automated capture service.

On a Mac, Command+P opens the print dialog. The Windows Print Screen shortcuts described here do not apply to macOS keyboards.

Troubleshooting Print Screen captures
Nothing appears when I press PrtScn
- Paste immediately into Paint with Ctrl+V; a plain press normally uses the clipboard rather than saving a file.
- Try Fn+PrtScn if the key is shared with another laptop function.
- Use Windows+Shift+S to verify that Windows screen capture works.
- Check whether another application has remapped the key or whether Windows is configured to open Snipping Tool.
The screenshot contains the wrong monitor or window
Plain PrtScn captures the whole display. Use Window snip to select one browser window, or Rectangular snip to select only the page area. On a multi-monitor setup, confirm which display contains the page before pressing the shortcut.

The image is blank or missing page content
Make sure the browser page has finished loading and that the required section is visible. Dynamic, lazy-loaded or interaction-dependent content may not exist in the pixels at the instant of capture. Scroll through the page first, or use a full-page browser tool that loads content as it captures.
The full-page option is unavailable in Edge
Edge Screenshot behavior varies by installed version, device and market. Update Edge, try the command from the browser toolbar or menu, and use a selected-area snip if full-page capture is not offered. For automated workflows, use an API such as ScreenshotNeo.
The file is too large or text looks soft
Crop browser chrome and unrelated desktop space before saving. PNG preserves small interface text; JPEG usually creates a smaller file but introduces compression artifacts. A high-DPI or retina capture can improve detail while increasing file size.

Frequently asked questions
Where do Print Screen screenshots go?
A plain PrtScn capture goes to the clipboard until you paste it into an app. Windows+PrtScn saves to Pictures > Screenshots on supported devices.
Can Print Screen capture a whole webpage?
Not by itself. It captures the visible display. Use Edge’s full-page Screenshot feature or an automated capture service for content below the fold.
Does Print Screen work without a Print Screen key?
Try Fn+Windows+Space Bar on supported hardware, or use Snipping Tool with Windows+Shift+S.
Is Ctrl+P another screenshot shortcut?
No. In Edge, Ctrl+P opens the print dialog. It creates print or PDF output rather than a screenshot of the screen.
