Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPress Windows logo key + Shift + S. When the screen dims, choose Rectangle or Freeform, then click and drag over the area you want. Windows copies the snip to the clipboard; press Ctrl + V to paste it into an email, document, chat, or image editor. Select the Snipping Tool notification if you need to annotate or save the capture as a file.
Capture a selected area with the keyboard
- Arrange the desktop so the content you need is visible. Close or move anything that should not appear in the image.
- Press Windows + Shift + S. Windows 10 dims the display and opens the screen-snipping overlay. Microsoft describes this shortcut as opening the snipping overlay for an image snapshot and selecting a region copied to the clipboard (Microsoft Support).
- Choose a snip mode from the toolbar. For part of the screen, choose Rectangle or Freeform.
- Hold the mouse button, drag around the required area, and release. The selected pixels are captured.
- Paste the result immediately with Ctrl + V. The image is now inserted in the application that has focus.
A notification normally appears after the capture. Select it to open the image in Snipping Tool, where you can mark it up, copy it again, save it, or share it.
Choose the right Snipping Tool mode
| Mode | What it captures | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangle | A rectangular area you draw | Most cropped screenshots, such as a dialog, chart, or paragraph |
| Freeform | An irregular outline you draw | Cutting around a non-rectangular object |
| Window | One application window | Capturing a complete app without manually tracing its edges |
| Full screen | Everything displayed on the monitor | A complete desktop or multi-window view |
Only Rectangle and Freeform let you define an arbitrary portion. Window and Full screen use predefined boundaries, although you can still edit the result afterward.
Where the screenshot goes
Clipboard capture
A capture made with Windows + Shift + S is copied to the Windows clipboard. It is not necessarily stored as a .png, .jpg, or .webp file at that moment. Switch to the destination app and press Ctrl + V to insert it. If you copy something else before pasting, the clipboard image can be replaced.

Save a file through Snipping Tool
- Select the capture notification, or open Snipping Tool from Start by searching for Snipping Tool.
- Use the app’s editing or annotation controls if required.
- Choose the save command, select a folder and file name, then confirm the image format offered by your Windows 10 build.
Saving from Snipping Tool creates a normal file you can attach, upload, or reopen later. Microsoft documents both clipboard use and saving in its Snipping Tool instructions.
Use Snipping Tool without the shortcut
If the keyboard combination does nothing, open Start, type Snipping Tool, and select the app. Choose New to begin a capture, then select a mode from Mode (the wording can vary slightly by Windows 10 release). Drag the selection and use the app to copy, annotate, save, or share it. This is also useful on a keyboard with a damaged or remapped Windows key.
Make Print Screen open the snipping interface
Windows 10 can assign the Print Screen key to the snipping interface. Open Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard, then turn on the setting that uses the PrtScn button to open screen snipping. The exact label can differ by Windows release; Microsoft lists this Windows 10 path in its keyboard-shortcuts guidance.

With the setting enabled, pressing PrtScn opens the selection interface instead of merely copying the entire screen. If you leave the setting off, PrtScn copies a full-screen image to the clipboard, which you can paste with Ctrl + V.

The overlay does not appear
- Press the keys together: hold the Windows logo key and Shift, then tap S.
- Try opening Snipping Tool from Start and selecting New.
- If a corporate policy, keyboard utility, or remote-desktop session intercepts the shortcut, use the app’s menu or the Print Screen setting instead.
The capture seems to have disappeared
Paste immediately with Ctrl + V. The shortcut places the image on the clipboard; it may not be a saved file. If the notification is still visible, select it and save through Snipping Tool. If you copied another item afterward, take the snip again.
The wrong area was selected
Press Esc before completing the drag, then restart the shortcut. For precise edges, use Rectangle mode and zoom the underlying app before capturing. Use Window mode when manually tracing a window border is difficult.

The notification is missing
The image can still be on the clipboard even if no toast appears. Try Ctrl + V in Paint, Word, an email composer, or another image-capable app. Then launch Snipping Tool from Start for editing and saving.
A full-screen capture is required
Use Full screen mode in the snipping overlay, or press PrtScn to copy the entire display. Paste it into the destination app and save it there if you need a file.

Practical choices for quality and privacy
- Include context deliberately: leave enough surrounding content to show which control, error, or page you mean, but crop passwords, tokens, private messages, and unrelated tabs.
- Prefer Rectangle for documentation: its straight edges are easier to read and annotate than a rough freeform outline.
- Use Window for repeatable support reports: it avoids accidentally omitting a title bar or status indicator.
- Save with descriptive names: include the app and date when several captures will be compared.
- Check scaling: high-DPI displays can produce a larger pixel image than expected. Resize only after saving the original if exact pixels matter.
Performance, reliability and file handling
The built-in shortcut is local: it does not require an internet connection, an account, or a separate download. Clipboard capture is fastest when you only need to paste once. Saving through Snipping Tool adds a deliberate file step, which is safer for records that must be reopened later.

For a long webpage, a screen snip captures only what is currently visible. Scroll and capture additional sections, or use a webpage capture tool that supports full-page rendering when a single long image or PDF is required. Dynamic content, menus that close on focus loss, and protected video surfaces may not appear exactly as expected; position the page first and capture a visible state.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10, although the PC continues to work. The screenshot shortcuts and Snipping Tool workflow above remain separate from that support status. See Microsoft’s Windows keyboard tips and tricks page for the support-date context.

If what you actually need is a clean screenshot of a public webpage rather than a picture of your Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture an irregular shape instead of a rectangle?
Yes. Press Windows + Shift + S and choose Freeform, then draw around the object before releasing the mouse button.
Does Windows + Shift + S automatically create a picture file?
No. It copies the capture to the clipboard. Paste it into another app or open the notification in Snipping Tool and save it.
What is the quickest way to capture one application window?
Open the snipping overlay, choose Window, and select the application window. Snipping Tool captures its predefined boundaries.
