How to Change Where Screenshots Go on Windows 10 and 11

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The right way to change the destination depends on how you took the screenshot. Snipping Tool has its own save-folder setting; Windows+PrtSc uses the PicturesScreenshots known folder; plain PrtSc copies an image to the clipboard instead of creating a file. OneDrive backup is a separate choice, not a replacement for either local setting.

First identify the screenshot shortcut or app

Windows has several capture paths that look similar but do not share one destination setting. Use this table before changing anything:

Capture method What normally happens Where to change the result
Snipping Tool, including Windows+Shift+S The capture opens in Snipping Tool. Automatic saving depends on the app’s settings. Snipping Tool > See More > Settings, or use Save as for one file.
Windows+PrtSc Windows saves a numbered image automatically. The PicturesScreenshots known folder; its Location tab can be moved using the File Explorer procedure described below.
PrtSc alone The screen image is copied to the clipboard. Paste it into an application and save it yourself.
OneDrive folder backup Pictures can be included in cloud backup. OneDrive Settings > Sync and backup. This backs up Pictures; it does not select a different local capture folder.

The labels below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, although a Snipping Tool update can rearrange controls slightly.

Change the Snipping Tool screenshot folder

This is the best route when your captures are made in Snipping Tool and you want its automatic files to go to a different directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
#1 Best Overall
  1. Open Snipping Tool from Start.
  2. Select See More (the three-dot menu), then choose Settings.
  3. Find the automatic-save and default Screenshots folder controls. Turn automatic saving on or off as needed, and select the folder you want as the default.
  4. Take a test snip and check the selected folder. If you want a different filename or a one-time destination, open the capture and choose Save as, then select the folder and filename.

Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool instruction is: “To change the automatic save behavior or the default Screenshots folder, select See More then select Settings.” The setting belongs to Snipping Tool; changing it does not automatically redirect screenshots made with every other keyboard shortcut.

Move the folder used by Windows+PrtSc

Windows+PrtSc saves to PicturesScreenshots by default. The path shown on your computer can differ if your Pictures folder was already moved or is managed by OneDrive.

  1. Open File Explorer and browse to Pictures > Screenshots.
  2. Right-click Screenshots and choose Properties.
  3. Open the Location tab and select Move.
  4. Choose or create the destination folder, then apply the change.
  5. If Windows asks whether to move existing files, choose based on your goal: move them to keep one collection together, or leave them where they are to change only future captures.
  6. Press Windows+PrtSc once and confirm that the new image appears in the destination.

This Location-tab procedure is documented in Microsoft Q&A community guidance rather than a current Microsoft Support step-by-step article. Treat it as the known-folder relocation route, not as the Snipping Tool setting. If the Location tab is missing or Windows refuses the move, do not edit the registry based on an unverified recipe. Use Snipping Tool’s own folder setting for Snipping Tool captures instead.

What happens with Print Screen and Windows+Shift+S?

Plain Print Screen

Pressing PrtSc by itself copies the image to the clipboard. You may see no new file anywhere. Open Paint, an image editor, a document, or another application that accepts images, press Ctrl+V, and then use that application’s Save or Export command to choose a folder and filename.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows+Shift+S

Windows+Shift+S opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay. After selecting a region, the result opens in Snipping Tool, where its automatic-save behavior and default folder are controlled by See More > Settings. If you need a specific destination for only that capture, use Save as rather than changing the default.

Use OneDrive when the goal is backup

The former OneDrive option named Save screenshots to OneDrive is no longer available in OneDrive settings. Microsoft’s current direction is to include the Pictures folder in OneDrive folder backup.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
  1. Open the OneDrive settings panel from the OneDrive cloud icon.
  2. Go to Settings > Sync and backup.
  3. Open the folder-backup controls and ensure Pictures is selected.
  4. After synchronization starts, check the OneDrive copy of PicturesScreenshots.

This changes where the files are backed up in the cloud, not which local folder a capture shortcut targets. You can relocate the known Screenshots folder and separately include Pictures in backup, but do not treat OneDrive backup as a universal redirect for Snipping Tool or clipboard captures.

Choose the route that matches your outcome

Your goal Use Important limitation
Every Snipping Tool capture should default to a project folder Snipping Tool > See More > Settings Does not govern clipboard-only PrtSc captures or necessarily every Windows shortcut.
Windows+PrtSc files should live in another local folder PicturesScreenshots > Properties > Location > Move The documented procedure is Microsoft Q&A community guidance; the Location tab may vary by configuration.
Keep screenshots in the cloud OneDrive Settings > Sync and backup, with Pictures included Backup is separate from choosing a local destination, and the old screenshot-specific toggle is gone.
Save only one capture somewhere else Snipping Tool’s Save as, or paste and save from the clipboard It does not alter the default for future captures.

When a screenshot is missing

  • You pressed PrtSc alone: there may be no file. Paste the clipboard contents into an app and save them.
  • You used Windows+Shift+S: open Snipping Tool, inspect its automatic-save setting, and use Save as if necessary.
  • You used Windows+PrtSc: start at PicturesScreenshots. If Pictures was moved or backed up, follow the path currently shown in File Explorer.
  • You expected OneDrive: verify that Pictures is included under OneDrive’s Sync and backup settings, then allow synchronization to complete.
  • The folder appears empty: check that you are looking at the same Windows user profile and that File Explorer is not showing a different Pictures location.

Common problems and fixes

The Snipping Tool Settings page has no folder option

Install pending Windows or Snipping Tool updates, reopen the app, and look under See More > Settings. If the control still is not present, use Save as for individual captures and use the known-folder route only for Windows+PrtSc files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing Snipping Tool did not affect Windows+PrtSc

That is expected: these are separate capture paths. Configure Snipping Tool for app captures, or move the PicturesScreenshots known folder for Windows+PrtSc.

Move is unavailable in Properties

The folder may not be the recognized Screenshots known folder, or your Windows configuration may expose it differently. Confirm the path under Pictures, avoid registry changes from unverified guides, and use Snipping Tool’s destination setting if that is the app you actually use.

Old images stayed behind

When Windows asks whether to move existing contents, declining leaves the old files in the former folder while new Windows+PrtSc captures use the moved location. You can manually organize the old files later.

OneDrive shows duplicates or an unexpected path

Pictures backup can change the path displayed for Pictures. Check the active Pictures location and OneDrive’s selected backup folders before moving anything again; avoid creating a second Screenshots folder with a nearly identical name.

If what you really need is repeatable screenshots of websites rather than desktop captures, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The same endpoint supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper sizes and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, ad/tracker/request blocking, custom headers and cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameters used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify a migration.
