Downloading an image does not normally give you a public web URL. It saves a copy on your device with a local file path. If you need the original image address, return to the page where the image is displayed and use the browser’s Copy image address or Copy image link command. If you only have the downloaded file and want to send it to someone, upload it to a hosting or cloud-storage service and copy a share link whose permissions allow the recipient to open it.
“URL of a downloaded image” can mean three different things:
- Original source URL: the address where the image was hosted before you downloaded it.
- Local file location: where your browser or operating system saved your copy.
- Share URL: a new web link created after uploading the file to a host.
Choose the section that matches your goal; these are not interchangeable.
Copy the original image URL while it is still online
The most reliable method is to open the image on the web and copy its image-specific address before downloading or after reopening the page.

Desktop browsers
- Return to the page that contains the image, or open the image file in a browser tab.
- Right-click the image.
- Choose the option labeled Copy image address, Copy image link, or similar wording. Labels vary by browser and by whether you are viewing a search result, a page, or the raw image.
- Paste the result into a text editor or message to inspect it. A direct image URL commonly ends in an extension such as
.jpg,.png,.webp, or.gif, but extensions are not required.
Some sites disable the context menu or place the image inside a link. In that case, right-click and choose Open image in new tab, then copy the address from the new tab’s address bar. If that opens a page around the image rather than the image bytes, you copied a page URL, not a direct image address.
Google Images on a computer
Google Images can show both the result page and the image’s source page. Open the result, then use the image-specific copy command if it is available. Do not confuse Copy link address for the result card with the image address; the former may lead to the publisher’s page.
Android
- Open the image or Google Images result in Chrome (or your chosen browser).
- Press and hold the image.
- Select Copy image address or the closest equivalent shown by your browser.
- Paste the address into a note or message.
Android menus differ between browsers and between an image shown in search results and one shown on a website. If no image-address command appears, open the source page, tap the browser menu, or use the desktop site option and try again.
iPhone and iPad
Press and hold the image in Safari or another browser and look for Copy, Copy Link, or Open in New Tab. If the browser copies the surrounding page link instead of the image, open the image in a new tab and copy the address-bar URL. The exact labels depend on the browser and website.
Find where the downloaded image is saved
If your goal is to locate the local copy—not to create an internet link—use the browser’s download list or your device’s file manager.

Chrome on a computer
- Open Chrome’s menu (the three dots).
- Select Downloads. You can also open the downloads page with
Ctrl+Jon Windows/Linux orCommand+Shift+Jon macOS, depending on your current Chrome shortcut configuration. - Use Show in folder (or the equivalent reveal command) to open the file’s location.
- Move or rename the file from your operating system’s file manager if needed.
Chrome’s download tray and Downloads page tell you where the local file is stored. Moving that file changes its location on your device; it does not publish the file or create a public URL.
Other browsers and operating systems
Firefox, Edge, Safari, and mobile browsers provide a Downloads view or save dialog. Search the browser menu for Downloads, then use its reveal, share, or file-location command. On phones and tablets, open the Files or file-manager app and check the Downloads folder, Pictures, or the folder you selected during saving.
Local paths versus file URLs
A path such as /Users/Alex/Downloads/photo.webp, C:UsersAlexDownloadsphoto.webp, or file:///storage/emulated/0/Download/photo.webp identifies a file on one device. It is not automatically reachable by another person over the internet. Sending that text to someone usually sends an unusable reference to your own storage.

If the original page is closed, recovery is possible but not guaranteed. Start with browser history and search for the page where you viewed the image. If you find it, reopen the image and use the copy-image-address procedure above.
The downloaded file itself may contain metadata such as camera information or an editing history, but there is no universal rule that it stores the web address from which it came. File properties and the Downloads list can identify the local copy without identifying its source. Treat reverse-image search or filename searches as investigative aids, not guaranteed URL recovery methods.

Create a shareable URL for the downloaded file
When the original source is unknown or you simply need to share your own copy, upload the file to an image-hosting or cloud-storage service.
- Choose a host that supports your file type and the audience you need to reach.
- Upload the image from your device’s file manager or the host’s upload control.
- Open the file’s sharing settings and select an access level that permits the intended recipients to view it.
- Copy the generated share link and test it in a private/incognito window or while signed out.
A host may provide two kinds of links:

You need an embeddable URL or want the browser to display only the image. |
Direct URLs can change when permissions, filenames, or expiration settings change. A public link also means anyone who obtains it may be able to view the image, so avoid uploading confidential material without understanding the host’s access controls.
Choose the right result for your goal

Troubleshooting common problems
“Copy image address” is missing
The site may block context menus, the image may be a CSS background, or you may be viewing a search-result card. Open the source page, try Open image in new tab, or use the browser’s desktop-site mode. If the image is a background or canvas rendering, there may be no standalone image URL exposed to the browser.
The copied link opens a webpage, not the image
You copied a page or share link. Look for a direct-download or direct-image option on the host, or open the image itself in a new tab and copy that tab’s address. Some hosts intentionally provide only page links.
The local path works for me but not for someone else
That is expected: the path points to your storage. Upload the file to a service and send its share URL instead.

The recipient sees “access denied”
Change the host’s permissions to allow the intended audience, check whether the link has expired, and test it while signed out. Organization-managed storage may restrict external sharing regardless of the link you copy.

The original page is gone
Check browser history, bookmarks, messages, and cached references. If you cannot locate the page, the file may not provide enough information to reconstruct the original URL. Uploading the image creates a new share URL, but it does not prove where the image originally came from.
The image looks different after upload
Some services resize, recompress, strip metadata, or convert formats. Keep the original local file as a backup and review the host’s upload and download options if fidelity matters.

Can I turn a file path into a public URL?
No. A file path identifies storage on your device. Upload the file to a host and use the host’s sharing link.
Is a share link the same as a direct image URL?
Not always. A share link may open a webpage, while a direct image URL resolves to the image resource itself.
Will downloaded image metadata reveal its original website?
Not reliably. There is no universal requirement for downloaded files to retain their source URL.
