The fastest method is to use the video’s ID in YouTube’s thumbnail URL: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg. Replace VIDEO_ID, open the address, then use your browser’s Save image command. This requests YouTube’s largest standard thumbnail variant, but it is not available for every video. If it fails, use a lower-resolution variant or the URL returned by the YouTube Data API.
Find the video’s ID
The ID is the value YouTube assigns to one video. In a normal watch link such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID, copy everything after v= up to the next & (if there is one). A shortened youtu.be link places the same ID after the slash.
- Remove tracking parameters such as
&list=or&t=; they are not part of the ID. - Keep the ID exactly as shown, including capitalization, hyphens and underscores.
- Use the video-specific ID, not the channel ID or playlist ID.
Save the highest-resolution thumbnail in a browser
- Copy the video ID.
- Open https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg, replacing
VIDEO_IDwith the real value. For a WebP file, use https://i.ytimg.com/vi_webp/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.webp. - Wait for the image itself to load, rather than saving the YouTube watch page.
- On a desktop, right-click (or Control-click) the image and choose Save image as. Pick a folder and retain the
.jpgor.webpextension. - On a phone or tablet, press and hold the image and choose the browser’s Save, Download image or Share action. The exact label depends on the browser and operating system.
maxresdefault is a request for a high-resolution file, not a promise that one exists. Some videos return a placeholder or no usable image at that path. Do not mistake a stretched placeholder for the creator’s full-size artwork.
Try a lower-resolution variant when maxresdefault is missing
If the maximum variant does not load, try the same ID with a lower-resolution filename. Common thumbnail variants include:

Availability varies by video, so test the returned image rather than assuming every filename exists. The direct endpoint normally gives you JPEG; the vi_webp form requests WebP.
Use the YouTube Data API for a reliable programmatic URL
For an application, the official YouTube Data API is safer than guessing a filename. A video’s thumbnail object contains a URL and may include width and height values. The API’s default thumbnail is typically 120 × 90 pixels, while larger sizes are exposed only when available. Select the largest size actually returned by the response, then download that URL with your HTTP client.
Why the API is preferable in software
- You receive the URL YouTube currently exposes for that video.
- You can read the dimensions before allocating storage or laying out an image.
- Your code can fall back when a high-resolution object is absent instead of treating a placeholder as success.
Cache the downloaded file if you will display it repeatedly, and retain the response’s width and height so your interface can reserve the correct space. The API returns metadata; it does not grant permission to republish the artwork.

Troubleshooting
The URL shows a broken image or placeholder
Verify the ID, remove extra query text, and try hqdefault.jpg, mqdefault.jpg or sddefault.jpg. If none is usable, query the video’s thumbnail object through the Data API and use a URL and dimensions that the response actually provides.

The saved file is tiny
You probably received the default thumbnail or a fallback. Read the image dimensions, then request another available variant or use the API’s largest returned object. The API’s default is typically 120 × 90 pixels.
The downloaded file has the wrong extension
Do not infer format from the URL alone. Inspect the HTTP Content-Type and decode the file before renaming it. The vi endpoint is commonly JPEG; vi_webp requests WebP.
A script reports success but the image will not open
Check the HTTP status, content type and file size. Save the response body only after confirming it is an image. Add a timeout and retry policy, and retain a lower-resolution fallback.

Saving an image is not permission to republish it
Downloading a copy and having the right to publish that copy are separate questions. YouTube states that an original work such as a video is usually automatically owned by its creator under copyright law. The Standard YouTube license is the default for uploads; a creator may instead choose Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY), which requires attribution and compliance with that license.

Before putting a thumbnail on a website, in advertising, or in a product, verify permission, a valid copyright exception, public-domain status or the video’s stated license. Private reference use does not automatically create publication rights.
Thumbnails can also violate YouTube policy when they are misleading, sexually explicit, graphic or otherwise prohibited. Do not assume that a downloadable URL means the image is approved for every use.

If you build a page or tool around YouTube content, YouTube’s developer policy requires metadata such as the thumbnail and title to remain visible and unmodified. A custom play button is acceptable only when tapping it starts playback. Keep the thumbnail associated with the correct video and avoid editing it in a way that removes required context.
