To make a link clickable in a PDF that already exists, open it in Adobe Acrobat, choose Edit > Link > Add or edit a link, draw a rectangle over the text or graphic, choose the link action, set its destination, and save. If you are still editing the document, add the hyperlink in Word or LibreOffice before exporting to PDF, then check the exported file in a PDF viewer.

Choose the right way to add a PDF hyperlink

The key decision is whether you have an existing PDF or an editable source document. Acrobat can add a link directly to a finished PDF. Word and LibreOffice let you create links in the source document and carry them into the exported PDF. For navigation within a document, create a destination that points to the relevant page view or heading/bookmark.

  • The PDF already exists: use Acrobat’s link-editing tools.
  • You can edit the original document: insert links in Word or LibreOffice, then export to PDF.
  • You need a clickable table of contents or cross-reference: use headings or bookmarks as destinations, and verify the exported links.

A hyperlink is an interactive action attached to an area in the PDF. That area may cover visible text, an image, or another part of the page. The link can lead to a website, file, email action, or a location within the same document.

Add a hyperlink to an existing PDF in Acrobat

  1. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat and select Edit.
  2. Choose Link > Add or edit a link.
  3. Drag a rectangle over the text, image, or other area that should respond to a click.
  4. Set the link’s appearance options if needed.
  5. Choose an action, such as Go to a page view, Open a file, or Open a web page.
  6. Follow the prompts to choose the destination, then save the PDF.

The clickable area is the rectangle you draw. Place it carefully: a rectangle that is too small can be difficult to select, while one that extends over neighboring text or controls can make the wrong area clickable. If a link should cover a phrase, position the rectangle over that phrase rather than assuming Acrobat will automatically identify the text you intended.

Link to a web page

Choose Open a web page and enter the destination address when Acrobat prompts you. Use the complete address for the page you want readers to reach. After saving, test the link in a PDF viewer: confirm it is clickable and that it opens the intended page.

Link to a file

Choose Open a file and select the destination file through Acrobat’s prompts. Consider how the recipient will access it: a link to a file on your own computer may not resolve on someone else’s device. If the file must travel with the PDF, decide how you will distribute both files and test the link in the same arrangement your readers will receive.

Link to an email action

Acrobat’s link actions include options beyond web pages and files. If the available action lets you create an email link, use the destination prompts to enter the intended address, then test it in a viewer configured to handle email links. The result depends partly on the recipient’s device and email setup.

Link to another page or place in the PDF

For a table of contents, cross-reference, or “back to contents” control, make the link point to an internal page view rather than a website. In Acrobat, choose Go to a page view, navigate to the target page and desired view, then select Set link. Save the PDF after setting the destination.

  1. Draw the clickable rectangle over the contents entry or other control.
  2. Select Go to a page view as the action.
  3. Navigate to the destination page and position the view as desired.
  4. Select Set link to assign that view as the destination.
  5. Save and test the link by selecting it in a PDF viewer.

For source documents, headings and bookmarks are useful navigation targets. A contents entry should lead to the section it names, not just a nearby page. If a section moves during editing, revisit the document’s navigation links and confirm the PDF export still points to the right place.

Create hyperlinks in Word before saving as PDF

In Word, select the text or picture that should be clickable, choose Insert > Link, and enter or select the destination. Word supports web, file, email, and in-document destinations. For internal navigation, structure the document with headings and bookmarks so readers can move to the intended section.

  1. Select the words or picture that will act as the link.
  2. Choose Insert > Link.
  3. Choose or enter the destination, such as a web address, file, email address, or in-document location.
  4. Confirm the link, then export or save a copy of the document as a PDF using a workflow that preserves links.
  5. Open the resulting PDF in a viewer and test the link.

Word and Adobe’s Word integration documentation describe PDF output that can include hyperlinked tables of contents, cross-references, bookmarks, and attachments. The exact export controls may depend on your Word edition and workflow, so do not assume a link survived solely because it worked in the editable document.

Create hyperlinks in LibreOffice before PDF export

In LibreOffice, select the text or place the cursor where the link should go, then use the Hyperlink command. Enter the destination and apply the link. The command supports inserting hyperlinks as text or buttons. Export the finished document as a PDF, then test the exported file in a viewer.

  1. Select the text, or place the cursor where the hyperlink should be inserted.
  2. Open the Hyperlink command.
  3. Enter the target and configure the link as needed.
  4. Apply the hyperlink and export the document as a PDF.
  5. Open the PDF and verify that the link works and leads to the intended destination.

LibreOffice is a free authoring route when you need to create links in a document before producing a PDF. Acrobat is the direct choice in this guide when the finished PDF itself needs editing; Word is a natural fit if the source document is already part of a Microsoft-based workflow.

Test the links in the exported PDF

Always check the PDF that readers will receive, rather than relying only on the source document. Export workflows can affect whether links are preserved, and generated navigation such as tables of contents and cross-references deserves particular attention.

  • Click each external link and confirm that it opens the correct destination.
  • Test internal links in both directions where relevant, including a return-to-contents link.
  • Check links attached to images, buttons, and small text areas as well as ordinary text.
  • Confirm that file links refer to files recipients can access.
  • Try the PDF in the viewer and on the kind of device your intended readers are likely to use.

This is a practical verification step: creating a link in an authoring tool does not by itself establish that every export and viewing setup will behave as intended.

Common problems and fixes

The link is not clickable

If the PDF already existed, confirm you used Acrobat’s Edit > Link > Add or edit a link workflow, drew a rectangle over the intended area, and saved the edited file. If you created the link in Word or LibreOffice, check the exported PDF rather than the source file; export again with a workflow that preserves links if necessary.

The clickable area is in the wrong place

In Acrobat, the action applies to the rectangle drawn over the page. Reopen link editing, adjust the rectangle to cover the intended text or graphic, save, and test the revised area.

An internal link opens the wrong page or view

Edit the link and repeat the Go to a page view setup: navigate to the correct destination and select Set link. Then save and click the link in the PDF to confirm the target.

A link works in the source document but not in the PDF

The link may not have been preserved in the export workflow. Export the document again using a method that carries hyperlinks into PDF output, then test the new file. Check generated contents and cross-reference links individually.

A file or email link does not work for a recipient

File links depend on whether the linked file is available to the recipient. Email actions depend on the recipient’s device and configured email software. Test with the same delivery arrangement and viewer your readers will use, and choose a destination that is accessible in that context.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a PDF hyperlink editor. If you also need a screenshot or PDF capture of a web page, its one-call API can capture a URL; it does not add clickable hyperlinks to a PDF. For making PDF links, use one of the workflows above.

For a web-page capture, the cURL request below saves a shot of the target URL. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for usage details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; individual steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
