Use Snagit’s Scrolling Capture to save a web page that is longer than the visible browser window. Choose Scrolling Capture when you want to control the selection and scroll yourself. Choose Automatic Scrolling Capture when Snagit can detect the browser’s scrollable area and operate it for you. The labels changed in Snagit 2023.2.0: “Panoramic Capture” became “Scrolling Capture,” while the former “Scrolling” command became “Automatic Scrolling Capture.”
The steps below cover current Windows workflows, browser settings that prevent clipped results, fixes for pages with several scroll regions, and the macOS edition differences that can change which commands you see.
Which Snagit scrolling mode should you use?
| Mode | Who scrolls? | Best use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scrolling Capture (manual) | You scroll the page. | Precise control over the selected area, direction and stopping point. | You must scroll smoothly and consistently; long or complex pages take more attention. |
| Automatic Scrolling Capture | Snagit scrolls a detected window horizontally, vertically or both. | Fast full-page captures when Snagit recognizes one ordinary scrollable area. | Detection can fail on unusual layouts, multiple scroll regions, parallax pages or browser/content combinations. |
Both methods can capture content below the fold, including long web pages and data tables. TechSmith’s current support documentation confirms vertical and horizontal scrolling capture, but it does not publish a universal success rate; results depend on the browser, page structure and computer.
Prepare the page before capturing
- Open the final URL in your browser and wait for the page to finish loading. Expand accordions or menus that must appear in the image.
- Set browser zoom to 100%. Non-default zoom can make the capture boundary and scroll calculations inaccurate.
- Choose a useful window size. Maximize the browser or resize it to the width you want in the finished image. A wider viewport usually means fewer wrapped lines and a shorter result.
- Remove obstructions. Close floating toolbars, translation bars and other overlays. If a cookie banner, newsletter prompt or chat widget is part of the page you do not want, dismiss it before selecting the capture area.
- Keep the browser scrollbar outside the selection. Including the scrollbar can produce an extra strip or prevent Snagit from recognizing the intended scrollable region.
- Decide whether the page has one scroll area. A standard document with one browser scrollbar is a good candidate for automatic capture. Dashboards, embedded tables, chat panes and nested scroll boxes often need manual capture or separate captures.
Method 1: Capture a whole page manually with Scrolling Capture
Manual Scrolling Capture is the dependable choice when you need to decide exactly what Snagit includes.

- Open Snagit and select the All-in-One tab.
- Start a capture and drag a rectangle around the page content inside the browser window. Stop before the browser scrollbar and exclude floating controls.
- When the capture controls appear, choose Scrolling Capture (the current name; older releases may call this Panoramic Capture).
- Scroll in one direction at a steady, moderate speed. Do not jump up and down or make a zigzag path. Continue until the bottom (or the required horizontal edge) is reached.
- Finish the capture. Snagit stitches the visible sections into one tall or wide image in the Snagit Editor.
- Review the joins at headings, images and tables. Crop unwanted browser chrome, then use File > Save As to select PNG, JPEG, WebP or another format available in your installed release.
Manual-capture tips for clean joins
- Keep the pointer away from animated elements while scrolling.
- Use a consistent scroll-wheel or trackpad gesture rather than page jumps.
- Let lazy-loaded images finish rendering before moving on; otherwise a later section may be captured before its image appears.
- If a sticky header repeats on every segment, capture it as part of the page only when that repetition is intentional; otherwise hide or collapse it first.
Method 2: Let Snagit use Automatic Scrolling Capture
Automatic mode is quicker when Snagit recognizes the browser window as one scrollable document.
- Open the page, set zoom to 100% and close overlays as described above.
- In Snagit’s All-in-One capture interface, drag over the page area while keeping the scrollbar outside the rectangle.
- Move the pointer over the selection. If Snagit recognizes a scrollable area, scrolling arrows or scrolling controls appear.
- Choose the control for vertical, horizontal or combined scrolling, depending on the page.
- Allow Snagit to scroll to the end without interacting with the browser. When it completes, inspect the stitched result in the Editor.
If no arrows or automatic controls appear, the selection is usually wrong, the page has more than one scroll region, or the browser/page combination is not supported reliably. Switch to manual Scrolling Capture rather than repeatedly forcing automatic detection.
Fixes when scrolling capture fails
No scrolling arrows appear
First redraw the selection so it covers the page content but not the scrollbar. Set browser zoom to 100%, disable or close floating toolbars, and retry with smooth scrolling. TechSmith also recommends testing a private or incognito window to rule out extensions, then trying another browser. Third-party utilities, security software, unsupported applications and page structure can all interfere, so the exact cause is machine- and page-dependent. See TechSmith’s troubleshooting article.
The capture stops partway down
Look for a nested panel with its own scrollbar, an infinite-scroll feed, a login timeout or a script that changes the page while Snagit is moving. Capture the outer document manually, then capture the nested panel separately if needed. For an infinite feed, load enough content first and pause briefly between manual scrolls.
Recommended Free Tools
The result is misaligned or contains duplicate sections
Redo the capture with 100% zoom and a steady one-direction scroll. Avoid rapid wheel movements and page jumps. Animated banners, parallax effects and layout shifts can change the pixels between segments; pause until each section settles before continuing. TechSmith specifically identifies parallax pages as difficult and recommends manual Scrolling Capture when automatic behavior is unreliable.
A page has several scrollable regions
Snagit may not identify a dashboard, embedded table and main document as one area. Select and capture the main document manually, then make additional captures for the inner panels. Stitching separate panels in an image editor is often cleaner than allowing automatic mode to choose the wrong scrollbar.
Snagit’s controls or preview appear in the image
In Snagit 2024.1.0 and later, enable Hide Snagit during capture and remove Snagit controls from completed captures in Capture Preferences. TechSmith documents this setting as the fix for the floating preview window and control bar being recorded. Older versions may require updating or closing the preview before starting.

The browser or security software blocks capture
Try a private window, a different browser and a temporarily simplified page without extensions. If endpoint-security software intercepts screen capture, consult its policy rather than disabling protection indiscriminately. A page that requires an interactive login, hardware key or constantly changing script may need an authenticated, manual workflow; do not assume a static URL represents what a signed-in user sees.

TechSmith documents a macOS Webpage workflow in which you choose Webpage, enter the URL and select Scroll to capture content below the visible browser area. The exact menu names can vary by installed release, so check the Help menu in your version if Webpage is not offered. The workflow is described in TechSmith’s macOS support article.
A separate App Store-edition article, updated in 2021, explains that Apple sandboxing limited full scrolling-capture functionality in that release and suggested dragging the URL as an alternative. That older, edition-specific method was limited to standard HTTP pages and could not capture pages requiring secure login or dynamic content at a static URL. Treat it as historical guidance: verify the behavior of your installed App Store build rather than applying those limits to every current Mac release. The article is TechSmith’s App Store release guidance.
Choose the right output and check the result
- PNG: best for sharp text, diagrams and screenshots that may be edited.
- JPEG: smaller files for photographic pages; repeated editing can introduce compression artifacts.
- PDF or a document workflow: useful when the capture must be printed or shared as pages, but verify page breaks and text readability after export.
At 100% zoom, inspect the top, bottom and every major transition. Check that lazy-loaded images, code blocks, tables and sticky navigation are present. A full-page image can be extremely tall; resize a copy for email or documentation instead of shrinking the original until text is unreadable. Keep the original capture if you may need to crop a section later.
When a browser screenshot is the wrong tool
Snagit captures what a browser renders on your machine. It is therefore a good fit for a one-off visual record, bug report or design review, but less suitable for a repeatable pipeline that must run unattended across many URLs, control cookies and headers, or return a machine-readable verdict when a page fails. In those cases, an HTTP screenshot API avoids desktop-window setup.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it can accept the cookie/consent banner like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be switched off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
It also supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hide selectors, waits for a selector/delay/network idle, request or resource blocking, custom headers/cookies/user agent/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for authentication and optional parameters. The following requests are complete starting points (replace the example URL and key).

Practical decision checklist
- Use manual Scrolling Capture when exact selection, nested panels or unusual page behavior matters.
- Use Automatic Scrolling Capture for a conventional single-scroll page that Snagit detects correctly.
- Use the macOS Webpage workflow only when it is available in your installed edition and release.
- Use an API when captures must be repeatable, authenticated, cleaned of overlays or generated without a desktop browser.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Snagit capture a page that scrolls horizontally as well as vertically?
Yes. Snagit documents scrolling capture in both directions. Select the intended area and choose the horizontal or combined scrolling control when it is detected; use manual Scrolling Capture if automatic detection chooses the wrong region.
Will Snagit capture content that appears only after I scroll?
Usually, if the content loads while the page is being scrolled. Pause long enough for lazy-loaded images or scripts to render, then inspect the stitched image for missing sections.
Why is my full-page screenshot enormous?
A full-page capture preserves the page’s rendered pixel dimensions. Keep the original for detail and export a resized copy for documents or email.
