The print workflow creates a multipage PDF rather than a picture of only the currently visible screen. You do not need a printer or paid PDF software for this basic task.
Save a webpage as a PDF in Safari
- Open the complete webpage in Safari and wait for the content you need to load.
- Choose File > Print, or press Command-P.
- In the print dialog, open the PDF menu and select Save as PDF.
- Enter a filename, choose a folder, and click Save.
Apple’s Mac documentation says any app that supports printing can save a document as a PDF, with no separate PDF software required (Apple Mac Help). Safari may paginate a long article across several sheets. Use the preview thumbnails or page count before saving to confirm that the sections you need are present.
Safari formats that are not PDFs
File > Save As offers Web Archive and Page Source in Safari. A Web Archive stores page graphics and links for browser use while those destinations remain available; Page Source stores the HTML source. They are different from a portable, shareable PDF and are documented separately by Apple (Save part or all of a webpage in Safari on Mac).
Save a webpage as a PDF in Chrome
- Open the URL in Chrome.
- Press Command-P, or open Chrome’s print command.
- Set the destination to Save as PDF.
- Review the preview, then click Save, choose a folder and confirm.
Google’s instructions describe Save as PDF in Chrome’s print flow (Print from Chrome). Chrome’s More > More tools > Save page as command is a separate webpage-saving operation, not the PDF option in the print dialog.

Make sure the entire page is in the PDF
A browser printout is a rendition of the page, not a literal copy of the scrolling screen. Responsive layouts, print styles, advertisements, fixed headers and interactive widgets can change or disappear. Before saving:
- Scroll through the page once so lazy-loaded text or images have a chance to appear.
- In the print preview, move through every page and check headings, images, tables and footnotes.
- Look for clipped columns, blank pages, missing backgrounds or an article that stops before the footer.
- If the page has a reader or print view, use it first; it often removes navigation and improves pagination.
- For a long page, save a test copy, open it in Preview, and use the thumbnail sidebar to verify the page count.
An Apple Support Community respondent reported that Safari on macOS Sequoia 15.5 produced a multipage PDF through File > Print > PDF > Save as PDF (July 20, 2025 discussion). That is a version-specific community report, not a guarantee for every site, Safari release or page design.
PDF, Web Archive or Page Source?

Choose PDF when the requirement is a document that another person can open consistently. Choose Web Archive when Safari-based page resources matter, or Page Source when you need the underlying HTML.
Print settings worth checking
Pages
Use All for the whole document, or enter a range after confirming the preview’s numbering. A range applies to printed pages, which may not match the webpage’s visible sections.

Orientation and paper size
Portrait usually suits articles. Landscape can prevent wide tables from being cut off. If the preview shows excessive wrapping, try a larger paper size or landscape orientation before saving.
Scale and margins
Reducing scale can keep a wide layout on one page, but text becomes smaller. Larger margins improve readability but may increase page count. Prefer readable type over minimizing pages.
Headers, footers and backgrounds
Browser print dialogs may offer controls for headers, footers and background graphics. Turn off headers and footers when you need a clean archival copy; enable background graphics only when color or shaded sections carry meaning. The exact controls vary by browser and macOS version.
When a page does not print correctly
The PDF contains only the visible portion
Use the print command rather than a screenshot shortcut. Print preview should show multiple pages for a long article. If it still stops early, reload the page, wait for content to load, disable an obstructive extension, and try the site’s reader or print view.

Images or sections are missing
Some pages lazy-load media only while you scroll. Scroll through the complete page, wait for images to finish, then reopen print preview. A site can also deliberately prevent saving items; Apple notes that some webpages may block saving content that appears on the page (Apple Safari guide).
Text is cut off or columns overlap
Switch between portrait and landscape, adjust scale, or choose a different paper size. Wide data tables often require landscape orientation. If a page uses a print stylesheet with a defect, try the other browser or copy the article into a simple document before printing.
The preview is blank or keeps loading
Check the page normally first. Sign in if the content requires an account, dismiss consent dialogs, pause aggressive content-blocking extensions for that site, and retry. A protected or script-dependent page may not expose printable content to the browser.
The saved file is too large
Large images and enabled background graphics increase file size. Turn off background graphics when they are decorative, print only the required pages, or use Preview after saving to inspect and reduce the PDF if your macOS version offers an export-size filter.

- Open the page in Safari or Chrome and wait for it to finish loading.
- Press Command-P, select Save as PDF, and choose a destination.
- Inspect every preview page for missing content, clipping and unexpected blank pages.
- Use landscape, scale or margins to correct wide or crowded layouts.

Can I save a PDF without installing Adobe Acrobat?
