What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The reliable answer requires two checks, not one: verify that your MCP client has a Playwright server entry launching npx with @playwright/mcp@latest, then run a real browser tool call against https://demo.playwright.dev/todomvc. You also need Node.js 20 or newer and an MCP-compatible host. A configuration entry proves registration; a successful navigation and accessibility snapshot prove that the server actually works.
What “installed” means for Playwright MCP
Playwright MCP is normally installed as an MCP client registration, not as a command that you install globally and run by hand. The client starts the server with npx, which resolves the @playwright/mcp@latest package when needed. That means a machine can contain a correct-looking entry while still failing at runtime because Node, PATH, package resolution or the browser is unavailable.
The official server registration has this shape:
{
"mcpServers": {
"playwright": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["@playwright/mcp@latest"]
}
}
}
The key values are the executable npx and an argument containing @playwright/mcp@latest. The server name can be changed, so do not reject a setup merely because it is not named playwright. What matters is the command and package.
The three checks, in the order that gives the clearest answer
1. Confirm Node.js and an MCP host
Open a terminal in the same user environment that runs your AI application and execute:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

node --version
The documented prerequisite is Node.js 20 or newer. A result such as v20.x, v22.x or a later major version satisfies that requirement. If the shell reports that node is not found, the client cannot launch the standard npx-based server until Node.js is installed and visible to the client process. Also confirm that the application hosting the assistant supports MCP; a terminal with Node alone is not an MCP client.
2. Inspect the MCP client configuration
Open the MCP settings for your host—such as VS Code, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex or another compatible client—and find the server list. Look for an entry equivalent to:
"command": "npx"
"args": ["@playwright/mcp@latest"]
Some clients keep this in a JSON file, while others expose a settings editor or command. Use the instructions for the client you actually run because file locations and UI labels differ. Check spelling carefully: the package is @playwright/mcp, including the scope and slash.
Configuration can come from a file, environment variables and command-line arguments. Command-line arguments have the highest precedence. If a file looks correct but the client behaves differently, inspect the higher-precedence source for an override.
3. Perform a real browser-tool smoke test
After saving the configuration, restart or refresh the MCP host so it reloads the server list. Ask the connected assistant to navigate to:
https://demo.playwright.dev/todomvc
Then ask it to return an accessibility snapshot (or the equivalent page snapshot exposed by your client). Successful navigation followed by a returned snapshot demonstrates that the client launched Playwright MCP, connected to its browser tool and received automation output. This runtime check is stronger evidence than a configuration screen alone.
How to interpret each result
| Check | What it establishes | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Node version | The prerequisite runtime is available in the shell you tested. | That your MCP client uses the same PATH or that a server is registered. |
| Server entry | The host has a registration capable of launching the standard package. | That npx resolves, the package starts or a browser can open. |
| Navigation plus snapshot | The configured client launched the server and completed a real browser interaction. | That every website, profile or browser action will work without site-specific restrictions. |
Use all three checks when diagnosing a new setup. If the first two pass but the smoke test fails, treat it as a connection or browser-environment problem rather than proof that the registration is correct.

Client-specific details that commonly cause confusion
The server name is not important
Clients often display a friendly name such as “Playwright,” but the label is arbitrary. Verify the launch command and arguments instead of searching for one exact name.

Restarting is part of the test
Editing a settings file does not guarantee that a running host has re-read it. Restart the application, or use its reload-MCP command if one is provided, before repeating the smoke test.
The first browser use may take longer
The browser can download automatically on first use. Wait for that download to finish and inspect the MCP client or server log if the first navigation appears stalled. A later attempt can distinguish a first-use download from a persistent launch failure.
Use the host’s documented setup
VS Code, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex and other clients expose MCP settings differently. The package and standard launch pattern remain the same, but the configuration location, reload action and log view are client-specific.
A practical verification worksheet
- Run
node --versionand record the output. Confirm the major version is 20 or newer. - Confirm the application you are using is an MCP client, not just a text editor or terminal.
- Open that client’s MCP configuration and locate the Playwright server entry.
- Verify that
commandisnpxand that the arguments include@playwright/mcp@latest. - Check any environment-variable or command-line configuration that could override the file.
- Save the change and restart or refresh the client.
- Ask the assistant to navigate to https://demo.playwright.dev/todomvc.
- Request an accessibility snapshot. Record whether the assistant returns page content rather than a connection error.
That record tells you which layer failed: prerequisite, registration, precedence/reload, server startup or browser interaction.

There is no Playwright entry
Cause: the client has not registered a Playwright MCP server, or you are viewing a different profile or workspace than the one the assistant uses.
Fix: add the standard npx/@playwright/mcp@latest entry using the client’s official MCP setup instructions, save it, then restart the host.

The client says it cannot find node or npx
Cause: Node.js is missing, older than version 20, or absent from the PATH inherited by the graphical client.
Fix: install or update Node.js to the documented 20-or-newer requirement and make sure the client process can see the same PATH in which node --version succeeds. Fully restart the client after changing PATH.
The package name is rejected
Cause: a typo or a different package was entered.
Fix: use @playwright/mcp@latest exactly. Keep npx as the command unless your client’s documented integration specifies another launch method.
The entry is correct but nothing changes after editing it
Cause: the host is still using its old in-memory configuration, or a command-line/environment setting has higher precedence.
Fix: restart or reload MCP, then check higher-precedence configuration sources. Test again only after confirming which source is active.
The server connects but the browser does not open
Cause: the browser may be downloading for first use, or the log contains a launch error that the chat view does not show.

Navigation works but no snapshot is returned
Cause: the connection may be established while the requested tool action is unsupported, interrupted or incorrectly phrased in that client.
Fix: ask for a page or accessibility snapshot explicitly after navigation, and use the tool names and interaction format shown by your client. A successful page load without returned tool output is not a complete verification.
It works in one client but not another

What to do when you only need a clean screenshot
Playwright MCP verification and screenshot delivery are different jobs. MCP confirms that an AI client can control a browser. If your immediate requirement is a predictable image or PDF of a URL rather than an MCP diagnostic, ScreenshotNeo provides a direct screenshot API. It does not replace the checks above or prove that Playwright MCP is installed, but it avoids configuring a browser client for a one-off capture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Or skip the browser setup
Call the API with one GET request. This example captures the same demo page used in the smoke test; replace the URL with your target:
cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://demo.playwright.dev/todomvc -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://demo.playwright.dev/todomvc"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://demo.playwright.dev/todomvc' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. Its MCP server supplies take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients, so it can complement—not validate—the Playwright MCP installation check.

Cost, reliability and security considerations
Cost
The configuration and smoke test themselves do not establish a separate Playwright MCP service fee. The first use can download a browser, so account for network access and local storage in the environment where the client runs. ScreenshotNeo’s billing behavior is separate: only clean shots are billed, while the listed failed or non-page outcomes and cache hits are not.
Reliability
A configuration check is static and can pass while runtime conditions change. The navigation-and-snapshot test exercises the complete path—client, PATH, npx, package startup, browser availability and tool response—so repeat it after changing Node versions, client profiles or deployment environments.
Security
Review the MCP client’s environment and configuration sources before enabling a server. Custom command-line arguments, environment variables and headers can override file settings. Keep API keys such as YOUR_API_KEY out of shared prompts, source repositories and logs when using ScreenshotNeo.
Bottom line
Playwright MCP is installed in the useful sense only when the host has the expected npx configuration, Node.js 20 or newer is available to that host, and a real navigation plus accessibility snapshot succeeds. A missing entry, unavailable PATH, stale client or first-use browser download explains most “configured but not connecting” reports.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a global Playwright installation prove that Playwright MCP is installed?
No. MCP is registered with the client through its server configuration. Check the npx entry and complete the runtime smoke test even if other Playwright packages are present.
Can I use a different server label than “playwright”?
Yes. The label is client-defined; verify that the launch command is npx and the arguments include @playwright/mcp@latest.
What is the strongest single sign that the setup works?
The connected assistant successfully navigates to the TodoMVC demo and returns an accessibility or page snapshot. That tests the configured server in the client that you actually use.
