What size should four pictures be on Twitter?
X allows up to four photos in one post, but it does not publish a dedicated four-photo pixel template. That means there is no official set of dimensions—such as a particular width and height—that guarantees four uncropped tiles on every screen. X automatically scales photos for display, and the preview’s arrangement and crop are the practical details to verify.
For a consistent-looking post, make all four source images the same aspect ratio. This is a production recommendation, not an X requirement or a promise that every client will display the images in a particular grid. If you need one starting point for a coordinated set, square images are straightforward to create and compare; landscape or portrait sets can work too, provided you check the composer preview carefully.
Pixel dimensions and aspect ratio are related but different. A 1200 × 1200 image and a 600 × 600 image are both square, even though their pixel dimensions differ. X does not specify which exact pixel dimensions to use for a four-photo set, so choose dimensions that suit your source material and keep each file within the upload limit.

What X officially specifies

The single-photo ratio range is useful context, but do not treat it as a four-image grid specification. X’s published material does not define a fixed four-photo canvas or promise one crop behavior for every combination of image shapes, device widths and clients.
Does X crop four images into a 2 × 2 grid?
Third-party guides often describe four-photo posts as a grid and may recommend a tile ratio, including 2:1, for a particular visual treatment. Those are external workflow suggestions, not an official X requirement. The Help Center rules described above do not establish a universal 2 × 2 crop template or a guaranteed pixel size for the tiles.

Think of the grid description as a way to anticipate a possible preview, not as a production specification. The display can depend on the client and available screen width. Inspect the actual composer preview on the device or client you plan to use, especially if the edges of the images carry important information.
How to prepare four images that survive cropping
- Choose one visual ratio for the set. Use a common aspect ratio across all four files if you want the set to feel uniform. The ratio is your design choice, not an official four-photo requirement.
- Keep key content inside a safe area. Leave breathing room around headlines, faces, logos, and other details that must remain visible. Avoid placing essential content flush against the edges, where a preview crop could cut it off.
- Export in an accepted format. Use JPEG, PNG or GIF. Do not use BMP or TIFF for these photo attachments.
- Check the file size of every image. Each photo must be no larger than 5 MB. If a file exceeds the limit, export it again with lower dimensions or more efficient compression while checking that text and fine detail remain legible.
- Select all four files in the post composer. Review the arrangement shown there rather than relying on a crop remembered from another post or a third-party sizing guide.
- Reorder the images before posting. X lets you reorder selected photos in the composer. Put the image that best introduces the post first, then check the new sequence in the preview.
- Publish a test post if the crop is critical. Where the exact appearance matters, check a test version in the relevant client and screen sizes before using the final post.
How to choose between square, landscape and portrait images
Start with the content rather than an unsupported “perfect” dimension. A set of product details, diagrams or matching campaign cards may be easiest to keep consistent as square artwork. A series of wide scenes may suit a shared landscape ratio; portraits may suit a people-focused sequence. In each case, use a common ratio when a uniform set is the goal, then let the composer preview determine whether the result is acceptable.

- Choose square when the four images are separate cards or panels and you want a simple, consistent source canvas.
- Choose landscape when the source material is naturally wide, but do not assume the single-photo 2:1-to-3:4 rule prevents cropping in a multi-photo post.
- Choose portrait when the subjects need vertical space, and keep faces and text well inside the edges.
These are design choices, not official X presets. If all four images cannot share a ratio without cutting off important material, prioritize the content and inspect each preview crop rather than forcing the set into one shape.
Why four-photo posts get cropped
A crop can appear because the preview is fitting a photo into its allotted display area, because images with different shapes are being arranged together, or because the client has limited horizontal space. A shared ratio can make the set more predictable visually, but it cannot guarantee an identical display on mobile and desktop. A detail close to an edge is therefore more vulnerable than one placed with margin around it.

- If a title is clipped, move it inward and leave more space around the text.
- If a face or logo is clipped, reposition or resize it in the source artwork, then re-upload.
- If one tile looks unlike the others, make the source ratios consistent or accept that the preview may display them differently.
- If the order feels wrong, rearrange the files in the composer and review the preview again before posting.
