The Link block—not the image itself—provides the link behavior. You can link to a page, external URL, Collection page, phone number, or file, depending on the project and link context.
Make an image clickable in Webflow
- Add a Link block. In Webflow Designer, open the Elements panel and add a Link block to the canvas.
- Put the image inside it. Drag an Image element into the Link block. If the image is already on the page, move it into the block on the canvas or in the Navigator.
- Select the Link block. Click the wrapper around the image, or select the Link block in the Navigator. Make sure you have not selected only the Image element.
- Set the destination. Open Element settings with D, choose the appropriate link type, and enter or select its destination.
- Check the result. Preview the page or publish it, then click the image and confirm it goes where expected. If the click does nothing, reselect the wrapper and verify that its link settings are configured.
Webflow describes a Link block as a flexible layout element: its contents become a link, and it can contain elements other than another link. This is the intended way to make an Image element clickable. Adding a custom href attribute to an ordinary element does not turn that element into a native link.
Choose where the image should lead
With the Link block selected, Element settings provide the destination controls. Pick the type that matches what visitors should do:
- Internal page: Link to a page in the Webflow project when the image should take visitors to another part of the site.
- Collection page: Choose this for a CMS-driven card or thumbnail that should lead to a relevant Collection page.
- External URL: Use a URL for a destination outside the current site. Enter the complete destination address and check that it is the intended one.
- Phone: Use the phone link option when activating the image should initiate a phone call on a visitor’s supported device.
- File: Choose a file destination when visitors should open or download a document or other linked file. Webflow identifies file attachment as a paid-plan feature. Linked image and document files open in the same tab by default.
Available contextual options can vary with the selected element and project. After choosing the type, inspect the settings that appear rather than assuming every destination uses the same input.
Same tab or a new tab
Webflow opens linked image and document files in the same tab by default. If a destination should open separately, select Open in a new tab in the link settings. Use that behavior intentionally: opening a tab can be useful when visitors need to keep their place, but it also changes the expected navigation behavior. Preview the published result to verify the setting.
Preloading linked pages
Link settings also offer loading choices. Default waits until a visitor clicks. Prefetch loads linked-page assets after the current page has fully loaded. Prerender starts rendering and downloading the linked page before navigation. These options are generally unnecessary for an ordinary image link. Webflow cautions that prefetching and prerendering can consume browser resources and slow things down if the visitor never follows the link; reserve prerendering for high-priority links where the behavior is justified.
Make a CMS image link to the right item
For a CMS-driven thumbnail, connect the image to a Collection image field and place that image inside a Link block. Then set the wrapper’s destination to the relevant Collection page or another appropriate URL. This keeps the image and its destination associated with the CMS item rather than requiring a separate manually maintained link for every card.
- Add or select the Image element in the Collection List or Collection Page layout.
- In the image settings, enable Get image from and select the Collection image field that should supply the image.
- Place that bound image inside a Link block, or move the image into one using the canvas or Navigator.
- Select the Link block and set its destination to the relevant Collection page or URL.
- Preview a representative CMS item and click its image to confirm the link points to that item’s intended destination.
For dynamic alternative text, enable Get Alt Text from and choose a field containing a description. If the Collection does not already have a suitable field, Webflow’s guidance describes adding a dedicated plain-text alt-text field and binding it to the image.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGive image-only links an accessible name
A link needs meaningful content so people using assistive technology can understand its purpose. For an image-only link, write specific, concise alt text that communicates the image’s meaning or where activating it leads. Avoid redundant openers such as “image of” or “picture of.” For example, a linked thumbnail of a product could use alt text that identifies the product or says what its link opens, rather than a vague description such as “photo.”
- Use the Audit panel. Webflow’s audit checks for empty links and recognizes image alt text as link content. Treat an empty-link warning as a prompt to check whether the image has meaningful alt text or the link has other meaningful content.
- Do not mark the only link content as decorative. Webflow provides a Decorative option for images that add no information. If the image is decorative but is the link’s only content, the link may still lack a meaningful accessible name. Provide another accessible name, such as visible text, rather than leaving an empty link.
- Keep the description relevant to the action. The alt text should help identify the linked content or purpose, not merely report visual details that do not help a visitor decide whether to activate the link.
Avoid nested links and choose the right image type
A Link block can contain layout content, but not another link. Do not put a text link, linked button, or second Link block inside the image’s Link block. Nested links are invalid as a link structure, and Webflow may prevent converting a Div into a Link block if that Div already contains a link. If the image and a nearby label should lead to the same destination, put both non-link elements inside one Link block instead of nesting separate links.
Rank #4
The workflow above is for an Image element, which is a standalone canvas element. A background image applied to a section or Div is different: it is a visual property of its container, not an Image element to drag into a Link block. For an interactive composition built around a background image, link the appropriate containing structure and make sure the resulting link has an accessible name. Avoid making a large container clickable if it also contains controls or links that should act independently.
Troubleshooting an image that will not link
- Clicking the image does nothing: Select the Link block wrapper, not just the image, and check Element settings for a destination. Confirm the image is actually inside that wrapper in the Navigator.
- The wrong item or page opens: Check the destination on the Link block. For CMS content, verify the image’s field binding and the link’s Collection-page target independently; a correct image field does not guarantee the wrapper has the correct destination.
- You cannot convert the existing container into a Link block: Look inside it for another link, such as a linked button or text. Remove or restructure the nested link before using a Link block.
- The link is flagged as empty: Add meaningful alt text if the image communicates the link’s purpose, or add other accessible link content. Do not rely on a decorative image as the link’s only name.
- A file opens in the current tab: Linked files use the same tab by default. If a separate tab is desired, enable Open in a new tab in the Link block’s settings.
- You are trying to add an
hrefmanually: Use a native Link block and its Element settings instead. Webflow says a custom attribute on an ordinary element cannot make it behave as a link. - A background image is not behaving like an Image element: Link the containing structure appropriately or use a standalone Image element for the simple image-in-Link-block workflow.

If you are documenting the finished Webflow page, making a screenshot for a review, or capturing a page for an automated workflow, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one request. It does not create or configure the Webflow link; use the Designer steps above for that. ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL, can remove cookie banners, popups and chat widgets before the shot, and does not bill bot checks, blank pages or failed loads. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Quick Recap
Final check before publishing
- The Image element sits inside the intended Link block.
- The Link block—not just the image—is configured with the intended destination.
- Any new-tab choice matches the intended visitor experience.
- An image-only link has meaningful accessible content and is not accidentally an empty link.
- CMS image and alt-text fields are bound to the intended Collection fields.
- The link is tested in preview or on the published page, including the destination it opens.
