These options do different jobs; neither Safari’s single-page formats nor Wget guarantee a complete, working copy of every modern website.
Choose the right kind of offline copy

If you only want to read an article on a flight, Reading List is the simplest fit. If you want a file representing a single page, choose Web Archive. If you need several linked pages and their links to point to downloaded files, use Wget and expect to check the result. A single-page archive is not a site mirror, and saving HTML source is not the same as saving a page ready to read offline.
Save pages for later with Safari Reading List
Reading List is designed for keeping pages to read later. Apple documents both saving an individual Reading List item offline and an Advanced setting that can save Reading List articles offline automatically.
- Add a page: Open the page in Safari. Use the Share button or the Add control near the Smart Search field to add it to Reading List.
- Open Reading List: Show Safari’s sidebar and select Reading List.
- Save an item offline: Control-click the page summary and choose Save Offline.
- For automatic saving: In Safari’s Advanced settings, enable the option to save Reading List articles automatically. The exact setting is documented by Apple in its current Mac Safari guide.
This is a practical choice for a small reading queue, not for preserving an entire site structure. It does not promise that every linked page, interactive feature, or changing piece of site content will be available as a local copy.

Save one webpage as a Safari file
- Open the page in Safari.
- Choose File > Save As.
- Choose Web Archive for a more self-contained saved page, or Page Source when you specifically need the HTML source.
When to use Web Archive
Apple describes Web Archive as saving page graphics. It is the more appropriate of Safari’s two formats when the goal is to keep a visual record of one webpage. It does not make all links work offline: Apple notes that links work as long as their destination pages remain available. Some pages may also prevent saving items displayed on them. Apple Support states: “Some webpages may prevent you from saving items that appear on the webpage.”
When to use Page Source
Choose Page Source for the HTML itself, such as when you need to inspect or retain source markup. It saves only the HTML source, not every image, stylesheet, script, or other asset that makes the page look and behave as it does in a browser. It is therefore not the right choice for a reader-friendly offline copy of a visually complete page.
Mirror linked pages with GNU Wget
GNU Wget is the broader option when you want recursive retrieval rather than a single Safari page. Its manual documents recursive downloading and link conversion so downloaded files can point to local files for offline viewing. That capability is not a guarantee that a command will produce a faithful, complete mirror of any particular site: this depends on the site, its access rules, and how its pages are built.

If Wget is available in your Mac terminal, a basic recursive retrieval with local-link conversion can be invoked like this:
wget --recursive --convert-links https://example.com/Replace https://example.com/ with the site address you are authorized to retrieve. This is a starting point, not a promise of a complete archive. Confirm that your installed Wget version supports the options you use by consulting its manual, and follow the target site’s access restrictions. The GNU Wget Manual documents recursive retrieval and local-link conversion; it does not establish that this particular command or any other one will work completely against every live site.
Check the result locally
- Open the downloaded entry page from your local files and follow several internal links to see whether they resolve to downloaded pages.
- Check pages with images or other visual assets; recursive page retrieval does not itself establish that every resource was copied successfully.
- Check whether the pages you care about are actually present, rather than assuming that every page on the site was retrieved.
- Do not treat pages behind a sign-in or other access restriction as available for copying simply because a recursive tool exists. Access conditions remain relevant.
The available documentation supports Wget’s recursive and link-conversion capabilities, but does not establish a universal set of flags, a guaranteed fidelity level, or how a particular website will respond. Check the installed version’s manual and the site’s access conditions before relying on a mirror.

What will and will not be available offline
- Saved reading material: Reading List is suited to pages you intend to read later, rather than retaining an entire linked site.
- One-page archive: Web Archive saves a page and graphics, but links to other pages still depend on their destinations being available.
- HTML for technical use: Page Source preserves HTML source, not all assets needed to reproduce the page’s appearance.
- Multi-page copy: Wget can retrieve pages recursively and convert links to local files, but the documentation does not promise full fidelity for every site.
- Restricted or blocked content: A saving method cannot be assumed to capture items that a site prevents from being saved or accessed.

Safari does not show “Save Offline”
Check that the page is in Reading List: the documented action is to Control-click a Reading List page summary and choose Save Offline. If you need one saved file instead, use File > Save As and choose a format appropriate to your goal.

The saved page is missing images or other content
First distinguish the chosen format: Page Source saves HTML only, whereas Web Archive is the Safari choice that saves page graphics. Apple warns that some webpages may prevent saving items shown on the page, so a missing element is not necessarily a setting you can fix in Safari.
Links in a saved Web Archive do not open offline
That is expected when the destination page was not saved locally. Apple says Web Archive links work as long as destination pages remain available; saving the current page does not download every linked destination.

A Wget copy has broken links or missing pages
Confirm that recursive retrieval and local-link conversion are enabled and that your installed version recognizes the options. Then inspect the local files and test links. Site behavior and access conditions can prevent a complete result, and the manual does not guarantee that a mirror will be complete for every site.

A site refuses to save content
Apple explicitly notes that some webpages may prevent saving displayed items. Respect the site’s restrictions; neither a Safari save option nor a recursive retrieval tool establishes permission to copy restricted material.
