The quickest route is an online converter that explicitly accepts the legacy Microsoft Word .doc format and offers PNG output. Upload the file only after checking the service’s current privacy and retention terms, choose PNG, set dimensions if available, and inspect every resulting page. If the document is sensitive or the online service rejects it, use LibreOffice locally; its Writer PNG export supports pixel width and height settings.
A .doc file is the Word 97–2003 format, while .docx is a later format. That distinction matters because converters often support one extension but not the other.
What you need to decide before converting
- Input extension: Confirm that the file ends in
.doc, not.docx. Use a converter that names your exact extension as supported. - Output shape: PNG is a raster image. A multi-page document normally becomes one PNG per page, but some services return a ZIP archive or another package. Check the selected tool’s stated behavior before uploading.
- Image size: If the converter offers pixel width and height, choose them according to the destination: screen display, print, or embedding in another system. There is no single correct dimension for every document.
- Privacy: Read the service’s upload, retention, and deletion terms. Do not assume that a file is private, encrypted, or automatically deleted unless the service says so in its current documentation.
Method 1: Convert DOC to PNG in a browser
- Verify the file type. In your file manager, inspect the extension. If extensions are hidden, enable “show file extensions” so you do not mistake a renamed
.docxfile for a real.doc. - Choose a converter with both required capabilities. Its input list should explicitly include Microsoft Word
.doc, and its output list should explicitly include PNG. A service that accepts only.docxmay reject a Word 97–2003 file even when the document opens normally in Word. - Review handling terms before upload. Look for the stated retention period, deletion process, account requirements, and any restriction on confidential or regulated documents. If those terms are missing or unclear, use a local workflow instead.
- Upload the document. Select the actual
.docfile rather than a PDF or a renamed copy. Wait for the service to finish opening and rendering the document. - Select PNG as the output format. If the interface separates “image format” from “page format,” choose PNG for the image format and keep the page option that matches your intended output.
- Set dimensions or resolution when offered. Enter pixel width and height only when you know where the image will be used. Increasing dimensions can make text easier to read but also creates larger files; reducing them can make small type illegible.
- Choose pages if the service supports page selection. For a long document, exporting only the needed pages avoids a large download and makes checking easier.
- Download every output. Determine whether you received one image, one image per page, or a ZIP file. Keep the original DOC until you have verified the complete result.
- Inspect the PNGs. Check headings, page breaks, tables, images, orientation, margins, and special characters against the original document. Visual checking is essential because rendering fidelity varies by document and converter.
When the browser route is the wrong choice
Do not upload confidential contracts, personal records, or proprietary material merely for convenience when the service’s handling terms are not suitable. A converter may also fail when the file is damaged, uses unusual embedded fonts, contains complex tables, or is very large. In those cases, try the local method below and compare the output visually.
Method 2: Use LibreOffice locally
LibreOffice documents a Writer PNG graphics export filter, including controls for pixel width and pixel height. This gives you a local alternative when you do not want to upload the DOC. The exact menu labels can vary slightly by LibreOffice version and operating system.

- Install a maintained LibreOffice release from the official LibreOffice project and apply available security updates. Document-processing software can receive security fixes, so avoid relying on an obsolete installation.
- Open the DOC in Writer. Let the document finish loading, then look through the pages for missing fonts, shifted tables, or warning messages about unsupported features.
- Use the export command. In Writer, open the File menu and choose the export option that lets you select an image format. Choose the Writer PNG graphics filter when it is offered by your build.
- Set image dimensions. Enter pixel width and height in the export parameters. Use a larger canvas for print-oriented output or detailed diagrams and a smaller canvas for web previews; preserve the document’s aspect ratio unless you have a deliberate reason to crop or stretch it.
- Choose the destination and export. Save the PNG to a new folder so it cannot be confused with the source DOC.
- Repeat or verify page handling. Depending on the LibreOffice workflow and version, a multi-page document may require page-by-page export or may produce separate page images. Confirm the files created rather than assuming a single image contains the whole document.
- Compare the result with the source. Check text, tables, page breaks, graphics, headers, footers, and orientation at 100% zoom.
Why a local conversion can be preferable
- The DOC remains on your computer instead of being uploaded to an unknown service.
- You can correct missing fonts or layout problems before exporting.
- Pixel width and height are available in the documented PNG export parameters.
- You avoid an account or an upload limit imposed by a particular website.
Local conversion is not automatically perfect. A DOC created with Word-specific features can reflow when opened by another office suite, so compare the rendered pages with the original.
Using PDF as an intermediate format
If a direct DOC-to-PNG option is unavailable, export the document to PDF first and then rasterize the PDF pages with a tool that supports PNG. Microsoft 365 Apps documentation describes exporting Word documents to PDF; it does not establish that Word itself exports directly to PNG.
- Open the DOC in Word or another compatible editor.
- Export or save a copy as PDF.
- Open the PDF in an image-conversion tool that lets you select PNG, page range, and pixel dimensions.
- Export one PNG per page when the destination expects separate images.
- Inspect page order, text sharpness, transparency, and margins.
The PDF step can preserve a stable page layout, but it adds another conversion stage. If the PDF already looks wrong, converting it to PNG will not repair the underlying layout.
How to choose among the routes
| Route | Legacy .doc support |
PNG path | Dimension control | Multi-page behavior | Privacy decision |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Browser converter | Must be stated by the selected service | Direct, if PNG is listed | Only if the service exposes width and height | Must be checked; may be separate files or a ZIP | Read that service’s current terms before upload |
| LibreOffice Writer | Opens Word 97–2003 DOC files | Documented Writer PNG graphics export | Pixel width and height are documented | Verify the behavior of your version and workflow | Local file processing |
| DOC → PDF → PNG | Depends on the editor used to create the PDF | Indirect, through PDF rasterization | Usually provided by the PDF image tool | Often one image per PDF page; verify output | Can be local or online, depending on the tools |
Quality, dimensions, and file-size trade-offs
Text readability
PNG preserves sharp edges well for screenshots, diagrams, and documents with flat colors. At too small a width, body text becomes difficult to read even though the conversion technically succeeded. Judge the image at its intended display size, not only in a zoomed preview.

Large documents
Every page rendered at a large pixel size can create a substantial download. Export only the required page range when possible, and keep a predictable naming scheme such as report-001.png, report-002.png, and so on.
Orientation and margins
Landscape pages, wide tables, headers, and footers are common sources of clipping. Check both portrait and landscape pages individually. If a page is cut off, return to the conversion settings and adjust the page or canvas options rather than stretching the finished PNG.
Transparency
Most document pages are intended to have a solid background. If your downstream system expects transparency, confirm that the selected exporter supports it; do not assume that a white page background can be removed without affecting text and graphics.
Troubleshooting DOC-to-PNG conversions
The service says the format is unsupported
Confirm that the file is really .doc and not .docx with a changed name. Choose a converter that explicitly lists DOC, or open the file in LibreOffice and export locally. Renaming the extension does not convert the internal file format.

The output contains only one page
The tool may export only the current page or may package additional pages separately. Look for a page-range control, a ZIP download, or multiple generated files. If the service does not explain its multi-page behavior, use a workflow whose output you can verify page by page.
Tables or images moved
Open the DOC in an editor first and look for missing fonts, unsupported Word features, or changed page size. Correct the layout, save a copy, and export again. Compare the PNG at 100% zoom; do not rely on a thumbnail.
Text is blurry or unreadable
Increase the exported pixel width and height, or choose a higher-resolution setting if the tool provides one. Avoid repeatedly resizing an already exported PNG; return to the DOC and render again at the required dimensions.
The upload never finishes
Check the file size and connection, then try a local LibreOffice conversion. A damaged DOC, a service size limit, or an unsupported embedded object can all prevent an online job from completing.

The converted PDF looks correct but PNG pages do not
Inspect the PDF-to-image tool’s page range, scaling, and color settings. The PDF may contain the correct layout while the rasterizer is cropping pages or using an unsuitable pixel size.
You are worried about confidential content
Stop and review the selected service’s current retention and deletion terms. If they do not meet your requirements, keep the workflow local with maintained office software and export the images on your own computer.

Practical verification checklist
- Confirm the source extension is
.docor intentionally convert a.docxfile through a tool that supports it. - Confirm PNG is the actual output format, not a renamed JPEG or PDF.
- Check every page, including landscape pages and pages containing tables.
- Verify dimensions, page order, filenames, and image readability.
- Keep the original DOC and the converter’s output together until approval.
- For sensitive files, document the service’s current handling terms or use a local workflow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a PNG retain editable Word text?
No. PNG is a raster image, so the text is not directly editable or selectable as Word text. Keep the DOC or PDF as the editable or text-preserving copy.
Should I convert DOC to PNG or PDF for printing?
Use PNG when an image file is specifically required. PDF is usually a better document-sharing or printing intermediary because it preserves a page-oriented document rather than turning each page into pixels.
What should I do with a password-protected DOC?
Open it with the password in a trusted local editor first. An online converter may reject encrypted files, and uploading a protected document can conflict with your security requirements.
Why is my DOC extension important?
DOC identifies the Word 97–2003 format, while DOCX is a different later format. A converter can support one without supporting the other.
