Use Google’s own Search appearance setting—not a Safari extension—to turn the Google homepage and Search results dark. On a Mac, open Settings → See all settings → Appearance → Dark theme → Save. On an iPhone or iPad, open More (⋯) → Settings → Appearance → Dark theme. Choose Device default instead when Google should follow your device’s current light or dark appearance.
Turn on Google dark mode in Safari on a Mac
These controls apply to Google Search pages, including the homepage, search results and Search settings. You do not need a Safari add-on or a physical display setting to change Google’s presentation.
- Open Safari and visit google.com.
- On the Google page, open Settings.
- Select See all settings.
- In the settings page, open Appearance.
- Select Dark theme.
- Click Save.
Return to the Google homepage or run a search. The page should use light text on a dark background. If the page does not change immediately, reload the tab after saving.
What to do if the Settings link is not obvious
The Settings control is part of Google’s page interface rather than Safari’s menu bar. Make sure you are on google.com, not Safari’s start page or a saved new-tab screen. If the page is narrow, zoomed, or partially loaded, widen the window or reload it so the Google controls render completely.

Turn on Google dark mode in Safari on an iPhone or iPad
- Open Safari and go to google.com.
- Tap More, shown as the three-dot menu (⋯).
- Tap Settings.
- Under Appearance, select Dark theme.
Google applies the choice to the Search homepage and results pages opened in Safari. On a tablet, the labels are the same even though the layout may provide more room for the menu.
Use Device default on iPhone or iPad
Select Device default under Appearance when Google should match the current color scheme selected for the iPhone or iPad. With this option, Google is intentionally following the device state; changing the device between light and dark appearance can therefore change Google Search too.
Dark theme, Light theme and Device default explained

Google’s live Search settings interface can label the control as On, Off and Device default. In that presentation, On corresponds to the dark Search presentation and Off to the light one. The wording can differ slightly from the longer Dark theme and Light theme labels.
Make Google follow your Mac or iPhone appearance
If you selected Device default, Google will not independently force dark mode. Check the operating system’s appearance setting and switch the device to its dark appearance there. Then revisit Google in Safari. This approach is useful when you want other applications that support system appearance to change together with Google.

If you instead selected Dark theme, the Google Search setting remains a forced choice even when the device itself is in light mode. Choose between these two behaviors deliberately: Dark theme is a Google-only override, while Device default delegates the decision to the device.
Saving and syncing the choice
When you are signed in
Google says a desktop theme choice is saved on each desktop when you are signed in. On mobile, the choice can be saved across signed-in mobile devices and tablets. This means the setting may appear on another supported device where you use the same Google account, but the exact result still depends on whether that device is signed in and which Search settings it can load.
When you are not signed in
Use the same Appearance menu to set the theme, but do not assume the choice will follow you to every browser or device. If Safari later displays the light page, open Google’s Search settings again, check the selected value and save it once more.
Troubleshoot a Google page that is still white
The change was selected but not saved
Return to Settings → See all settings → Appearance on Mac, or More → Settings → Appearance on iPhone or iPad. Confirm that Dark theme is selected and use the page’s Save control where it is offered. A selection that was not saved will not reliably persist after navigation.

Device default is selected
With Device default, a light device appearance produces a light Google page by design. Check the Mac, iPhone or iPad system appearance, change it to dark, then reload Google. If you need Google dark regardless of that system setting, return to Search Appearance and choose Dark theme instead.
You changed Safari’s appearance, not Google’s
Safari’s own interface appearance and Google’s Search theme are separate controls. Use Google’s page-level Settings menu and Appearance section; changing a Safari toolbar or start-page preference does not select Google’s Search theme.
The Google menu is missing on mobile
Reload google.com in Safari and tap the three-dot More menu on the page. Do not use Safari’s share sheet or browser settings for this step. If the page is partially loaded, wait for it to finish and open the menu again.
Only one Google page looks dark
Google’s setting is intended for the homepage, results page and Search settings. Open a fresh Google homepage and perform a new search to verify the setting across those Search pages. A different Google service can have its own appearance controls and is not changed by this Search setting.

The page changes back after switching devices
Check whether you are signed in on the device where the setting reverted. Google’s documented cross-device saving applies to signed-in desktop and mobile use; an unsigned Safari session may not carry the same preference. Re-select the desired Appearance value on that device if necessary.
Choosing the right setting for common Safari workflows
- Always dark in Google: choose Dark theme. This is the explicit Google Search override.
- Match a Mac’s current mode: choose Device default so Google follows the Mac appearance state.
- Match an iPhone or iPad’s current mode: choose Device default on that device.
- Return to the classic white page: choose Light theme and save the setting.
- Use the same preference on several signed-in devices: sign in to the same Google account and verify Appearance on each device.
