Chrome’s Dark theme does not force every website to use a dark background. To change website content, check whether your Chrome installation offers the experimental Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents flag, or use a dark-mode extension such as Dark Reader. Both approaches can have exceptions; neither guarantees that every page will render correctly in dark mode.
If you only want Chrome’s toolbar, homepage, settings, and some other Chrome pages to look dark, use Chrome’s built-in appearance setting instead. The steps differ between desktop and Android.
Choose the kind of dark mode you need
There are two different things people often mean by “dark mode in Chrome”:
- Chrome’s interface theme changes parts of the browser, such as its toolbar and settings. It does not serve as a documented, universal switch for website content.
- Darkening website content changes the appearance of pages you visit. Chrome may offer an experimental flag for this in some installations, or you can try an extension that applies generated themes.
Google’s Chrome Help says that when you browse in Dark mode or Dark theme, “your homepage, toolbar, settings, and some other pages will be dark.” That wording is about Chrome’s interface and pages, not a promise that every website will turn dark. See Google Chrome Help for computers.

Change Chrome’s interface theme on desktop
- Open a New Tab page.
- Select Customize Chrome.
- Open Appearance.
- Choose Dark to keep Chrome’s interface dark, or choose Device to follow your operating system’s appearance.
Google documents the desktop choices as Light, Dark, and Device. The precise location or wording may shift with Chrome versions and interface rollouts. This setting changes Chrome’s interface; if the websites you visit remain light, that is not by itself evidence that the setting failed. It is not documented as a control that forces all website content dark. Google’s desktop instructions
Change Chrome’s interface theme on Android
- Open Chrome and tap More (the three-dot menu).
- Tap Settings, then Theme.
- Choose System Default, Dark, or Light.
Google says Android’s System Default uses dark theme when Battery Saver is on or the device is in dark theme. This describes Chrome’s theme setting; it does not establish that all websites in Android Chrome will use dark backgrounds. Google Chrome Help for Android
Try Chrome’s experimental website-darkening flag
Some Chrome installations may show an experimental option called Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents. The available instructions are from a Google Chrome Community discussion, not current official consumer documentation, so treat the flag as an experiment rather than a dependable Chrome feature. If it is absent from your installation, do not assume there is a setting you can force on.

- In Chrome’s address bar, enter
chrome://flagsand press Enter. - Use the search box on the flags page to search for Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents.
- If that option appears, read its description. To try it, use the option’s menu to select Enabled.
- Select the button to relaunch Chrome when prompted. Save any work in open tabs first, because the browser will restart.
- Check a few sites you use. If the results are poor or Chrome behaves unexpectedly, return to
chrome://flags, find the same option, set it back to Default, and relaunch.
Chrome flags are experimental settings and can change or disappear. The cited community answer itself warns that flag guidance may not be verified or up to date. Chrome for Developers describes automatic dark mode in the context of an older Android Origin Trial and DevTools previewing; that historical developer documentation does not prove that a consumer desktop-wide switch is currently available. See the Chrome Community discussion and Chrome for Developers documentation.
Use Dark Reader for per-site controls
If the flag is missing, or you want a control designed for website content and individual sites, you can try Dark Reader in the Chrome Web Store. Its listing says it generates dark themes for websites and supports enabling or disabling Dark Reader for specific sites, syncing with system dark mode, and detecting already-dark websites so they can be left unchanged.
- Open the Dark Reader listing in the Chrome Web Store and install the extension using Chrome’s offered controls.
- Open a website and select the Dark Reader icon in Chrome’s extensions area. If you do not see it, open the extensions menu.
- Use Dark Reader’s controls to switch its effect on or off for the current site and adjust its available settings to suit your preference.
- Check important pages, including menus, forms, images, and embedded content. Turn the extension off for a site if its generated theme makes content harder to use.
Dark Reader’s help page describes per-site settings and notes that Chrome can restrict script injection on some pages. Consequently, an extension may not affect every page or every part of a page. Do not run multiple similar dark-mode extensions together: overlapping modifications can make it harder to diagnose a broken or inconsistent appearance. The available sources do not establish comparative speed, battery life, accessibility outcomes, or a success rate across websites.

Why dark mode may not appear on every page
- The interface theme and page content are separate. Changing Chrome to Dark can leave a site’s own content light because the documented setting affects Chrome’s interface, not every website.
- The flag is missing or has changed. Experimental flags are not stable consumer settings. If the named option is not shown on
chrome://flags, use another method rather than relying on old instructions. - A site or page blocks extension injection. Dark Reader’s help says Chrome may restrict scripts on some pages, which can prevent the extension from changing them.
- A site already has its own appearance controls. Look in the site’s settings for a theme or appearance choice; a site-provided option may be more suitable than an automatically generated theme.
- Only part of a page changes. Pages can include embedded or separately rendered content. The cited sources do not promise that an extension can recolor every element, so check the specific portion that remains light and use the site’s own controls where available.
Troubleshoot common problems
Chrome is dark, but websites are still white
This is expected if you changed only Chrome’s interface appearance. To try darkening website content, check for the experimental flag or use an extension with site-level controls.
The Auto Dark Mode flag does not appear
The instructions apply only if the option is present in your Chrome installation. The source is a community answer and does not establish current stable availability. Do not treat the missing flag as a fault; try the extension route if you want to change site content.

Dark Reader changes some sites but not others
Use its per-site control to disable the effect where it looks wrong. If it has no effect on a particular page, Chrome may restrict extension script injection there. Consult Dark Reader’s help for its site settings.
The Android theme option does not darken a website
The Android setting controls Chrome’s theme. Google’s instructions do not say that it forces all site content dark. Check whether the individual site has its own appearance setting; do not assume desktop extension steps apply to Android Chrome.

What to use for your situation
- Choose Chrome’s Dark or Device appearance setting when you want Chrome’s own interface dark.
- Try the flag only if it appears in your installation and you are comfortable testing an experimental option.
- Try Dark Reader when you want website-level changes and per-site controls, while allowing for pages where Chrome restricts extension behavior.
- Use a screenshot API only when you need a saved image or PDF; it is not a substitute for darkening websites while browsing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Chrome’s dark theme make Google Search dark?
Not necessarily. Chrome’s appearance setting affects Chrome’s interface; the appearance of Google Search depends on the website’s own settings or a website-darkening method.
Can I make only one website dark?
Dark Reader’s Chrome Web Store listing describes controls to enable or disable it for specific websites.
Is Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents a guaranteed setting in Chrome?
No. The cited directions are from a community discussion about an experimental flag, and availability in a particular Chrome installation is not established.
