When the screen dims, choose the rectangular snip and drag over the part of your Dell display you want. Windows copies the selected area to the clipboard; open the Snipping Tool notification to annotate, save, or share it. This works on Dell computers running Windows 10 or Windows 11 and does not depend on finding a particular Dell Print Screen key.
Use Windows + Shift + S for a partial screenshot
This is the fastest method when you need only part of the screen. It uses Windows Snipping Tool, so the procedure is the same across Dell laptop and desktop models even when their keyboards have different labels.
- Prepare the screen. Open the window, document, image, or webpage and arrange it so the area you need is visible. Anything outside the selected region will not be included.
- Open screen snipping. Press Windows + Shift + S at the same time. The display dims and a snipping toolbar appears.
- Choose a mode. Select the rectangular option for a normal box-shaped capture. Choose freeform if you need to draw an irregular outline. The toolbar also offers window and full-screen capture modes.
- Select the area. For a rectangle, click and drag from one corner to the opposite corner. Release the mouse or trackpad button when the selection covers exactly what you need. For freeform, trace around the subject and release.
- Open the result. Windows copies the snip to the clipboard and normally shows a notification. Select that notification to open the capture in Snipping Tool.
- Save or share it. In Snipping Tool, use the annotation controls if required, then select the save button, choose a folder and file name, and select the image format offered by the app. You can also copy, share, or print from the app.
The important detail is that Windows + Shift + S initially creates a clipboard capture; it does not by itself promise that a file has already been saved. Open Snipping Tool and save the image when you need a permanent file.
Choose the right Snipping Tool mode
Rectangular snip
Use this for a clean, predictable section such as a dialog box, chart, paragraph, or product image. Dragging gives you control over both the position and dimensions.

Freeform snip
Freeform is useful when the subject has an irregular outline. The resulting image follows the shape you draw rather than a simple rectangle, although the surrounding result may still appear on a rectangular canvas depending on the Windows version.
Window snip
Window snip captures a complete application window. It is preferable when you want the title bar and the whole active window rather than manually outlining it.
Full-screen snip
Full-screen mode captures every visible display. If your goal is specifically one region, rectangular snip is less likely to include unrelated material.
Where the screenshot goes
| Method | What it captures | Initial destination | Needs a Dell Print Screen key? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows + Shift + S | A selected rectangle, freeform area, window, or full screen | Clipboard, with a Snipping Tool notification | No |
| PrtSc | Windows screen-snipping behavior on current Windows configurations | Clipboard or the snipping overlay, depending on the setting | Yes, or an equivalent function-layer key |
| Windows + PrtSc | Full screen | PicturesScreenshots |
Yes, or an equivalent function-layer key |
To paste a clipboard snip directly into another app, click its document or message area and press Ctrl + V. If you cannot find an image file, return to Snipping Tool and use its save command; the selected-region shortcut is not the same as the Windows + PrtSc file-saving shortcut.

Print Screen alternatives on Dell keyboards
Dell keyboards do not all place or label the Print Screen function the same way. Some laptops put it on a function-row key or require Fn with that key. Some Dell desktop keyboards without a dedicated Print Screen key use Fn + Insert. These are hardware-layout differences, not requirements for Windows + Shift + S.
If you want to use a Print Screen shortcut, inspect the symbols printed on your keyboard and try the combination documented for your model. Do not assume that Fn is always needed. If a combination does not respond, consult the user guide for the exact Dell model rather than repeatedly trying unrelated keys.
Set what the PrtSc key does in Windows
On current Windows versions, pressing PrtSc can open the screen-snipping overlay instead of simply copying the entire screen. Windows lets you change this behavior in keyboard accessibility settings. Open Settings, choose Accessibility, select Keyboard, and locate the option that controls whether the Print Screen key opens screen snipping. Turn it on or off according to your preference, then test PrtSc.
This setting affects the physical Print Screen function. It does not change the dedicated Windows + Shift + S shortcut.

Saving, annotating, and naming a partial screenshot
Save a normal image file
After selecting the notification, choose Snipping Tool’s save control. Pick a known folder, enter a descriptive name, and select the available image type. A name such as dell-wifi-error-2026-09-30.png is easier to find than a generic sequence of numbers.
Mark up sensitive details
Snipping Tool can be used to draw, highlight, or otherwise mark an image before sharing. Check the entire frame for passwords, email addresses, recovery codes, private messages, or unrelated browser tabs. Cropping the selection more tightly before saving reduces accidental disclosure.
Copy without saving
If you only need to paste the image into Teams, an email, a document, or an image editor, leave it on the clipboard and press Ctrl + V in the destination. Save a file when you need to attach it later, keep a record, or upload it to a service that cannot read the clipboard.
Common problems and fixes
The overlay does not appear
- Press all three keys together: Windows, Shift, and S. The Windows key is the key with the Windows logo.
- Try the shortcut while the Windows desktop is visible. A full-screen application, remote session, or security policy can intercept keyboard shortcuts.
- Open the Start menu, search for Snipping Tool, launch it, and select New as a fallback.
The capture is not in a folder
Windows + Shift + S places the selected region on the clipboard first. Select the notification, open Snipping Tool, and save it. Do not look only in PicturesScreenshots; that location is associated with Windows + PrtSc full-screen captures.

Only part of the desired area was selected
Run Windows + Shift + S again and start the drag slightly outside the intended corner. Move the pointer slowly to the opposite corner before releasing. If the target is a complete application window, use window snip instead of trying to trace its borders.
The notification disappeared
Open Snipping Tool from Start and check whether the capture is still available in the app. If it is not, repeat the shortcut. Clipboard contents can also be replaced when another application copies text or an image.
PrtSc works differently from the instructions
That is usually a keyboard layout or Windows setting issue. Check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard for the Print Screen option, then check the Dell model guide for Fn-layer behavior. Use Windows + Shift + S to avoid both variables.
The pasted image is blank or old
Make a fresh snip and paste immediately. Some remote-desktop, protected-video, banking, and digital-rights-managed windows deliberately block screen capture; a different shortcut will not necessarily bypass that restriction.

If what you need is a screenshot of a webpage rather than the physical Dell desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns a clean image or PDF from one API request. It is not a replacement for Windows Snipping Tool when you are selecting pixels from a local desktop, but it is useful for repeatable webpage captures in scripts, build jobs, and documentation.
ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response reports the result in the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I select a region across two monitors?
Yes. With the displays arranged as one Windows desktop, start Windows + Shift + S and drag across the visible span you need. The selection must remain within the area Windows exposes to the snipping overlay.
Will Windows + Shift + S capture a minimized window?
No. The target must be visible on the desktop. Restore or bring the window forward first, then make the selection.
What image format should I choose when saving?
Use the format that matches the destination: a lossless format for text and interface details, or the format required by the site or application receiving the file. Snipping Tool presents the formats available on your Windows installation.
Does this shortcut work on a Dell computer running Linux?
The instructions here are for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Linux desktop environments use different screenshot shortcuts and applications.
