If pressing PrtSc appears to do nothing, first decide what result you expect. Microsoft uses different shortcuts for a clipboard snapshot, the Snipping Tool overlay, and video capture. Press Windows + Shift + S for an editable image snip, Windows + Shift + R for a video snip, or PrtSc for a full-screen image copied to the clipboard. On Windows 11, you can assign the single PrtSc key to open the screen-capture overlay.
Identify the behavior you actually want
“Print Screen is not working” can describe several different outcomes:
- No visible response, even though an image may have been copied.
- A full-screen image is placed on the clipboard instead of opening an editor.
- Snipping Tool opens when you expected a simple clipboard capture.
- Another application launches or claims the key.
- A capture is saved automatically, but no pop-up appears.
Use this matrix before changing settings:

Try a known-good built-in shortcut
For an editable image
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- When the overlay appears, choose freeform, rectangle, window, or full-screen mode.
- Select the area. The result can be edited in Snipping Tool and then saved or copied.
This test bypasses the single-key mapping. If it works, Windows’ capture components are functioning and the problem is probably the PrtSc assignment, keyboard layer, or another application.
For a video clip
Press Windows + Shift + R. This is a video-snipping shortcut, not an image shortcut. If you expected a still image, use Windows + Shift + S instead.

Configure PrtSc to open Snipping Tool in Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessibility and select Keyboard.
- Turn on Use the Print Screen key to open screen capture.
This path and label were given by Microsoft External Staff moderator Hendrix-V in a June 10, 2026 Microsoft Learn Q&A answer. Windows builds can rename or relocate controls. If you do not see the option, search Settings for Print Screen or screen capture.
After enabling it, press PrtSc once. You should get the same screen-capture overlay that Windows + Shift + S opens. This setting is documented specifically for Windows 11; do not assume the identical toggle exists in every Windows 10 build.
Know the difference between PrtSc and Windows + PrtSc
Plain PrtSc is documented as a full-screen static image copied to the clipboard. It does not necessarily open an editor or a notification.
Windows + PrtSc is a separate full-screen shortcut. Do not use it when your requirement is “open the editor.” Use Windows + Shift + S, or enable the Windows 11 Print Screen setting above. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions also describe automatic saving for captures made through its current Windows 11 workflow; the default Screenshots folder and automatic-save behavior can be changed in Snipping Tool Settings.

Check a laptop’s Fn and function-lock layer
Many laptops print “PrtSc” as a secondary label on another key. Try the manufacturer’s Fn combination, commonly Fn + PrtSc, rather than the key by itself.
If the keyboard has a function-lock state, toggle it and test again. TechSmith’s support guidance specifically suggests Fn + Esc to disable function lock on some devices. This is not universal: Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, and other manufacturers can use different keys and indicators. Look for a lock icon or consult the laptop’s manual when the combination does not respond.
On a keyboard without a dedicated Print Screen button, Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as a screenshot fallback. The exact behavior still depends on the keyboard firmware.
Find applications that have claimed the hotkey
Third-party capture and sync utilities can register Print Screen globally. TechSmith documents conflicts involving Snagit and identifies OneDrive and Dropbox as common competing assignments for Snagit. Logitech keyboard software can also remap a physical key.

- Open each installed screenshot, cloud-sync, gaming-overlay, or keyboard-customization utility.
- Find its Hotkeys, Shortcuts, or Keyboard page.
- Look for an action assigned to Print Screen or PrtSc.
- Disable that assignment or choose another key combination.
- Restart the utility, then test PrtSc again.
If pressing PrtSc launches an unexpected program, the competing assignment is the most likely explanation. You do not need to install Snagit or another tool to repair Windows’ built-in shortcut; inspect software you already use.
Verify where the image went
Check the clipboard
After pressing PrtSc, open Paint, an image editor, or another application that accepts images and press Ctrl + V. A pasted full-screen image confirms that the key worked even if no notification appeared.
Check Snipping Tool and the Screenshots folder
Snipping Tool captures can be edited and saved. On current Windows 11 workflows, captures can also be saved automatically in the Screenshots folder. Open Snipping Tool, go to its Settings, and review the automatic-save option and default folder. A changed folder can make a successful capture look “missing.”
Check the shortcut you used
Clipboard output, editor output, and automatic files are different destinations. Test one shortcut at a time and record whether the result appears in the clipboard, Snipping Tool, or a folder.

Troubleshoot common symptoms

When hardware may be the problem
Use the on-screen keyboard to separate software from a failed physical switch. Open Start and search for On-Screen Keyboard, then click its PrtSc key. If the on-screen key works but the physical key does not, inspect the laptop’s Fn layer, remapping utility, and keyboard hardware. A replacement keyboard is a last resort for a physically damaged or absent key, not the standard fix for a configuration issue.

Does PrtSc save a file automatically?
Plain PrtSc is documented as copying a full-screen image to the clipboard. Snipping Tool workflows can save captures automatically, depending on Windows version and Snipping Tool Settings.
Why does Windows + Shift + S work while PrtSc does not?
Windows + Shift + S invokes the Snipping Tool overlay directly. PrtSc may be assigned differently, require Fn, or be intercepted by another application.
Can I make PrtSc copy the screen and open Snipping Tool at the same time?
The documented behaviors are separate. Choose clipboard capture with PrtSc or the Snipping Tool overlay with Windows + Shift + S, or assign PrtSc to the overlay on Windows 11.
