Which wkhtmltopdf release and package should you download?
Use the 0.12.6 stable series
The project’s downloads page identifies 0.12.6 as the stable series, released June 11, 2020. Downloads are hosted through GitHub releases. The project repository is archived, so do not expect a frequent stream of upstream releases. GitHub’s 0.12.6 release points to the packaging repository for the 0.12.6 r1 binaries.

Download only from the official project release page or from your operating system’s package repository. If a release asset supplies a checksum or signature, compare it after downloading. Be cautious with binaries copied to third-party mirrors.
Match the operating system and architecture
| Platform | Package listed by the project | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | 32-bit or 64-bit installer; 7z archives are also listed | The installer supports Windows Vista or later. |
| macOS | 64-bit installer | The listed installer targets macOS 10.7 or later. |
| Debian and Ubuntu | Distribution package or a matching project package | Choose the package built for your exact distribution release and architecture. |
| AlmaLinux, CentOS, Amazon Linux, openSUSE and Arch Linux | Distribution-specific packages are listed in the project matrix | Do not substitute a generic Linux binary when a package for your release is available. |
Linux builds are distribution-specific because library versions, font configuration and libc behavior differ. A binary that starts on one distribution is not guaranteed to start on another.
#1 Best Overall
Prepare before installing
- Confirm whether your operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit, then select the matching asset.
- On Linux, identify the distribution and release (for example, Debian Bookworm) before choosing a package.
- Make sure the machine has the runtime components expected by the build, especially fonts. Some Linux packages also need X11-related components.
- Plan to open a new Command Prompt, PowerShell window or Terminal after installation so the updated
PATHis loaded. - If you will convert user-submitted HTML, design an isolation and sanitization policy before deploying the command on a server.
Install wkhtmltopdf on Windows
Installer method
- Open the official wkhtmltopdf downloads page and select the Windows installer matching your CPU architecture: 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Run the installer and accept the installation location, or choose a controlled directory used by your deployment process.
- Finish the wizard, then close any existing Command Prompt or PowerShell windows.
- Open a new Command Prompt or PowerShell window and run
wkhtmltopdf --version. - Run the smoke conversion below and open the resulting PDF.
wkhtmltopdf https://example.com output.pdf
The version command should report the installed 0.12.6 build (or the package’s equivalent version string). If Windows reports that wkhtmltopdf is not recognized, the executable directory is not on PATH; reopen the shell first, then invoke the executable by its full installation path if necessary.
7z archive method
The downloads matrix also provides Windows 7z archives. Use an archive when your deployment process cannot run an installer: extract it to a fixed directory, locate wkhtmltopdf.exe, and call that executable by its full path or add its directory to PATH. Verify the extracted binary with the same --version and test conversion commands.
Install wkhtmltopdf on macOS
- From the official downloads page, download the listed 64-bit macOS installer for macOS 10.7 or later.
- Complete the installer using the prompted destination.
- Open a new Terminal window so the shell can see the installed command.
- Check the installation:
wkhtmltopdf --version
wkhtmltopdf https://example.com output.pdf
If the command is not found, inspect the installation directory and invoke the binary with its full path. This also distinguishes a failed installation from a shell PATH problem.
Install on Debian, Ubuntu and other Linux distributions
Use the distribution package when it exists
Distribution packages are usually the safest choice because their dependencies are built for that distribution. Debian Bookworm currently lists wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6-2+b1 for multiple architectures. On Debian or Ubuntu, refresh the package index and install the package named wkhtmltopdf with the system package manager:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install wkhtmltopdf
After installation, start a new shell and verify:
wkhtmltopdf --version
wkhtmltopdf https://example.com output.pdf
The Debian package metadata describes conversion from a URL, a local HTML file or standard input to PDF or image output. It lists Qt WebKit, Qt GUI/network/print-support and related dependencies, and notes X11-related requirements.
Use a project package when the repository package is unsuitable
If your distribution does not provide a usable package, return to the project matrix and select the package built for your exact release and architecture. Do not assume that a package for another Debian, Ubuntu, CentOS or Amazon Linux release will have compatible libraries. If installation is impossible but the package format can be unpacked, the project FAQ allows extraction; all required runtime dependencies still have to be present.
Check the Qt build before standardizing it
Different Linux packages can produce different results when one includes the project’s patched Qt features and another does not. Record the package source and version in your deployment notes, then compare a representative page on the same operating system that will run production conversions.
Verify the installation with a repeatable smoke test
- Run
wkhtmltopdf --versionand save the output with your deployment record. - Convert a stable, harmless public page:
wkhtmltopdf https://example.com output.pdf
- Confirm that
output.pdfexists, has a non-zero size and opens in a PDF viewer. - Test a local document used by your application. The Debian package supports a local HTML file as input; keep this test free of untrusted scripts.
- On Linux, repeat the test under the same service account that will run the converter. This catches missing fonts, permissions and display-library dependencies that may not appear in an interactive shell.
Understand compatibility before choosing a binary
Operating system and CPU architecture
A Windows 32-bit installer, Windows 64-bit installer, macOS 64-bit installer and Linux distribution package are not interchangeable. Selecting the wrong architecture can prevent installation or force an unsupported runtime.

Patched Qt versus distribution Qt
wkhtmltopdf renders through Qt WebKit. The project’s packaged builds can include patched Qt behavior, while a distribution build may use a different Qt configuration. If page layout or rendering changes after an operating-system migration, compare the exact package and Qt build rather than assuming the HTML changed.
Fonts and X11-related components
Fonts are part of rendering, not merely a cosmetic add-on. Missing fonts can change line breaks, pagination and glyphs. Some Linux packages also rely on X11-related components, even when the converter is launched from a server process. Install the dependencies required by the package for your distribution instead of copying libraries from an unrelated release.
Security: never feed it unsanitized user HTML
The project’s downloads and FAQ page gives this warning: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!”
Treat HTML, JavaScript, local files and external resources as untrusted input. Sanitize user content before conversion, run the process with the least privilege possible, restrict filesystem and network access where your platform allows it, and keep the converter behind an application boundary rather than exposing a command endpoint directly to arbitrary users.
Troubleshoot common installation and conversion failures
“Command not found” or “not recognized”
Close and reopen the terminal so it reloads PATH. If that does not help, locate the installation directory and call wkhtmltopdf by its full path. On Windows, an extracted 7z archive often requires this explicit path unless you add it to PATH.
Linux reports missing libraries
Install the package built for the exact distribution release, including its declared Qt, font and X11-related dependencies. A generic binary is not guaranteed to work across distributions. Extracting a package instead of installing it does not remove the dependency requirement.
The PDF is blank or conversion fails
First run the example.com smoke test. If it succeeds, compare the failing page’s external resources, fonts and scripts with the working page. If both fail on Linux, inspect the runtime libraries and X11-related components, then retry under the service account used in production.
Rendering differs after an upgrade or migration
Record the output of wkhtmltopdf --version, the operating system release and the package source on both machines. Differences commonly come from distribution builds, patched-Qt availability, library versions or fonts. Standardize the package and runtime rather than mixing binaries from different releases.

- Used Book in Good Condition
The installer or package cannot be used in your environment
Use the project’s archive format where available, or extract the package as described by the project FAQ. Extraction is only a packaging workaround; all runtime dependencies must still be supplied and maintained.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Performance, reliability and licensing considerations
- Reproducibility: Pin the operating-system release, architecture, package source, version output and installed fonts. These variables can affect pagination and layout.
- Maintenance: The stable series dates from 2020 and the main repository is archived. Plan your own security review and regression tests instead of expecting frequent upstream releases.
- Runtime: Run a representative conversion under the production service account before scaling up. This exposes missing fonts, permissions and display dependencies early.
- Cost: wkhtmltopdf is open-source software, so there is no paid download or required accessory. Your operational costs are the machine, storage, dependency maintenance and isolation needed for safe conversion.
Or skip the browser setup
If your actual goal is a hosted screenshot or PDF rather than maintaining a local browser-rendering binary, ScreenshotNeo provides a GET API and an MCP server for AI clients. It accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled.
Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf—work with Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
