Version 0.12.6 is the project’s stable series, released June 11, 2020. It is a legacy Qt WebKit renderer, so test the exact binary and operating system you will deploy, keep local-file access disabled unless required, and never convert unsanitized user HTML or JavaScript.
What “patched Qt” means
wkhtmltopdf renders HTML through Qt WebKit. The project’s patched Qt adds capabilities that are not present upstream in Qt; an unpatched distribution build can therefore omit options or behave differently. The executable name and version number alone are not enough: the version output must identify the patched Qt build.
The official project describes 0.12.6 as its stable series and lists packages for Windows, macOS and selected Debian distributions and architectures. A static package still depends on system packages beyond Qt, and one Linux binary should not be assumed to work on every distribution. Check the current official downloads page for an operating-system and architecture match before installing.
Verify the executable
- Install the package intended for the machine that will perform the conversion.
- Run
wkhtmltopdf --version. - Confirm that the output says
wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 (with patched qt), or otherwise clearly identifies version 0.12.6 and patched Qt. - Run the same check from the service account, container, or worker process that will generate PDFs; a shell user may resolve a different executable through
PATH.
If the output identifies an unpatched build, install a package from the project’s supported downloads rather than assuming patched-only options will work.

The command structure
The documented synopsis is:
wkhtmltopdf [GLOBAL OPTION]... [OBJECT]... <output file>An object is a normal page, a cover, or a table of contents. Objects appear in the PDF in command-line order. Options can be global or apply to one object; use the 0.12.6 usage guide to confirm the scope of an option before moving it.
Convert a local HTML file
wkhtmltopdf input.html output.pdfConvert a URL
wkhtmltopdf https://example.com/ output.pdfThe input can be a local HTML path or a URL. Put global settings before the first object, object-specific settings immediately before that object, and keep the output path last. Quote paths containing spaces.
Useful layout options
Common controls include paper size, orientation, margins, headers and footers, and page-level rendering behavior. For example:
wkhtmltopdf --page-size A4 --orientation Portrait --margin-top 18mm --margin-right 15mm --margin-bottom 18mm --margin-left 15mm https://example.com/ report.pdfUse the exact option names and defaults in the usage guide. Options marked there as requiring patched Qt will not work as documented with an unpatched distribution build.
Combining pages, a cover and a table of contents
List document objects in the order they should appear:
wkhtmltopdf cover cover.html toc chapter-1.html chapter-2.html book.pdfCover object
cover adds a cover page. The cover is excluded from the table of contents and does not receive headers or footers.
Table of contents object
toc inserts a generated table of contents. wkhtmltopdf builds it through XSLT; the manual documents the outline rules and explains how to inspect or customize the generated stylesheet. Keep the toc object where you want it to appear in the output sequence.

Multiple ordinary pages
Each ordinary input becomes another document object. Object-specific options must precede the corresponding input, not a later object. A practical pattern is:

combined.pdfFor exact behavior, check whether the option is global or object-scoped in the 0.12.6 manual; do not infer scope from the option’s name.
Local images, CSS and fonts
In 0.12.6, local filesystem access is blocked by default. A local stylesheet, image, font or script can therefore disappear even when its relative path is correct. First check that the conversion process can read the file and that the HTML uses valid paths. Then review the file-access option documented in the usage guide and enable local access only when the input is trusted.
Granting filesystem access changes the security boundary: HTML rendered by wkhtmltopdf may be able to reach files that the process account can read. Use a least-privilege account, isolate the renderer, and expose only the directory that contains the intended assets where your deployment permits that control.
Relative paths
Resolve relative references from the HTML file’s location, or use a controlled absolute path that the renderer can access. A browser preview is not proof that a headless process has the same working directory or permissions.

Security requirements
The project’s downloads page gives this warning: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” Treat HTML, JavaScript, CSS, URLs, cookies and headers supplied by users as hostile.
- Sanitize user HTML before conversion and remove scripts unless they are essential.
- Run the converter as a restricted account without access to secrets, sockets or sensitive directories.
- Do not pass attacker-controlled command-line fragments to a shell; use an argument array in your process launcher.
- Limit outbound network access if the document does not need remote resources.
- Keep local-file access disabled unless a trusted document genuinely requires it.
- Use timeouts and resource limits so a page cannot consume unlimited CPU, memory or disk.
Troubleshooting wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6
“Unknown long argument” or a patched option has no effect
Check wkhtmltopdf --version. You may be running an unpatched distribution build or a different executable earlier in PATH. Install a matching official package and retest under the production service account.

Images or stylesheets are missing
For local assets, remember that filesystem access is blocked by default in 0.12.6. Verify the path, permissions and process identity, then consult the manual’s local-file-access setting. For remote assets, check DNS, TLS, authentication and outbound firewall rules.
The PDF is blank or a page times out
Confirm that the URL is reachable from the conversion host, not merely from your workstation. Check redirects, required cookies, JavaScript dependencies and server-side bot checks. Capture the converter’s stderr, set an appropriate load delay or wait behavior from the usage guide, and enforce an outer process timeout.

Compare the exact wkhtmltopdf version, patched-Qt status, operating system, architecture, installed fonts, locale, timezone and system libraries. Reproduce in the same container or package image used in production.
Fonts or text wrap differently
Install the required fonts for the service account and verify font discovery on the target host. Differences can also result from WebKit’s legacy CSS and font rendering; test representative pages rather than relying on a browser screenshot.
The command succeeds but the file is unusable
Check the exit code, stderr and output size. Write to a temporary file, verify that it is a readable PDF, then atomically rename it into place. Ensure the destination directory exists and is writable by the worker.

0.12.6 dates from June 11, 2020, and the project’s GitHub repository is archived read-only. The official sources reviewed do not announce a later stable release. That does not automatically make an existing deployment unusable, but it means you should pin and inventory the binary, test every target platform, monitor security advisories affecting your environment, and decide whether a legacy WebKit renderer meets current compatibility and security requirements.
Build a small regression set containing local assets, remote pages, long documents, right-to-left text, custom fonts, JavaScript-generated content and failure cases. Compare PDFs after upgrades to the operating system, fonts, libraries or package image. Keep conversion logs, exit codes and timing so failed jobs can be diagnosed without rerunning untrusted input blindly.

- Version output confirms 0.12.6 with patched Qt.
- The package matches the target operating system and architecture.
- Global and object-specific options are in the correct positions.
- Local assets work with filesystem access intentionally configured.
- Untrusted HTML is sanitized and rendered in a restricted environment.
- Timeouts, exit-code handling, stderr capture and temporary-file validation are implemented.
