For a standard landscape 4K YouTube video, create the thumbnail at 3840×2160 pixels (16:9). Export it as JPG or PNG. YouTube’s current custom-thumbnail guidance lists a 640-pixel minimum width, a 2 MB limit when uploading a video thumbnail from mobile, and a 50 MB limit from desktop. A YouTube Short uses a separate vertical canvas: 2160×3840 pixels (9:16).
The correct 4K YouTube thumbnail size at a glance
| Upload type | Recommended canvas | Aspect ratio | Minimum or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular landscape video | 3840×2160 pixels | 16:9 | 640-pixel minimum width |
| YouTube Short | 2160×3840 pixels | 9:16 | Separate vertical presentation |
| Video thumbnail uploaded on mobile | Use the same canvas rules above | Usually 16:9 for regular videos | 2 MB maximum file size |
| Video thumbnail uploaded on desktop | Use the same canvas rules above | Usually 16:9 for regular videos | 50 MB maximum file size |
YouTube defines 2160p (4K) video as 3840×2160 in the default 16:9 format, and its current custom-thumbnail guidance recommends 3840×2160 for regular videos. The recommendation is about the image canvas; it does not mean a thumbnail is technically required to match the source video’s resolution. YouTube also states that a custom thumbnail should be as large as possible, subject to its upload limits.
Do you need a 4K thumbnail for a 4K video?
No hard rule says that a 4K upload must have a 4K thumbnail. YouTube’s minimum width for a regular video thumbnail is 640 pixels, so a smaller 16:9 image can meet the minimum. However, 3840×2160 is the published recommendation for regular video custom thumbnails and gives you the largest working canvas before YouTube creates smaller versions for different surfaces.
Starting with the recommended canvas also gives you room to crop a frame, arrange a subject and add readable type before exporting. If your source artwork is smaller, enlarging it will not create missing detail; begin with the highest-resolution still or design file you can obtain.

Why 16:9 matters for regular videos
Use a true 16:9 canvas for a standard landscape upload: 3840 pixels wide by 2160 pixels high. Do not add black bars or artificial padding to compensate for a different video shape. YouTube adapts the player to the video’s aspect ratio, so baked-in bars become part of the thumbnail rather than solving the layout problem.
Keep the important content inside the frame
Place the face, product, logo or key words well inside the edges of the 16:9 canvas. This is a practical design precaution rather than a separate YouTube dimension: thumbnails are displayed in different sizes and contexts, and edge-hugging details are the first things to become difficult to read after scaling.
Do not confuse 4K with DPI
The relevant YouTube specification is pixel dimensions. The cited YouTube guidance does not specify a DPI value or promise identical sharpness on every display. Set the document to 3840×2160 pixels and concentrate on a clean export within the file-size limit.
Regular video versus YouTube Shorts
A Short is not a 3840×2160 thumbnail turned sideways. The separate vertical guidance is 2160×3840 pixels at a 9:16 aspect ratio. Use that vertical canvas when the upload is a Short, and expect the thumbnail to be presented differently from a regular landscape video.

If the same concept is published both as a regular video and as a Short, prepare two compositions. Reusing a 16:9 file for the vertical version can cut off the subject or leave large unused areas; starting with the correct canvas lets you place text and imagery for each presentation.
JPG or PNG: which format should you export?
YouTube’s custom-thumbnail guidance recommends JPG and PNG. Either is a sensible final format:
- JPG: useful for photographic frames and complex backgrounds because adjustable compression can reduce the file size substantially.
- PNG: useful for crisp graphic elements, flat colors and text. It can be larger, so check the upload limit before sending it from a phone.
Keep an editable project file separately, then export a delivery copy as JPG or PNG. Do not rely on a file extension alone: open the exported image and verify that it is the intended dimensions, orientation and color appearance.
How to create and export a 3840×2160 thumbnail
- Create the canvas. Set width to 3840 pixels, height to 2160 pixels and the document ratio to 16:9. For a Short, use 2160×3840 and 9:16 instead.
- Build the composition. Add the selected video frame or artwork, then position the main subject and essential wording away from the extreme edges. Avoid adding black bars as a substitute for choosing the correct aspect ratio.
- Check at small size. Zoom out or preview the image at a reduced size. If the title or subject disappears when the image is small, simplify the design before exporting.
- Export a JPG or PNG. Choose the format that preserves the image cleanly, then inspect the resulting file rather than the editor’s project preview.
- Check the file size for the upload route. A mobile upload must be 2 MB or less; a desktop upload can be up to 50 MB under the current guidance. If a mobile file is too large, export a JPG with slightly stronger compression or reduce unnecessary image data while keeping the 3840×2160 dimensions.
- Upload through the intended device. The same image can satisfy the dimension rules but fail because the selected upload route has a different size ceiling. Confirm the file size after the final export, not before compression.
How to get a 3840×2160 file under 2 MB on mobile
The mobile ceiling is the stricter one. A full-resolution PNG containing photographic detail can exceed 2 MB even when its dimensions are correct. Use this order of operations:

- Remove hidden layers and metadata from the delivery copy.
- Export a JPG if the image is primarily photographic.
- Lower the JPG quality in small increments and inspect text and edges after each export.
- Keep the pixel dimensions at 3840×2160 unless you deliberately choose a smaller image that still meets YouTube’s 640-pixel minimum width.
- Check the final byte size on the device that will perform the upload.
Do not judge success by dimensions alone. A 3840×2160 image that is 2.4 MB can still be rejected by a mobile upload, while the same file is below the 50 MB desktop ceiling.
Troubleshooting common thumbnail problems
“The image is too large” on a phone
Cause: The file exceeds the 2 MB mobile limit. Fix: Re-export as a compressed JPG, remove unnecessary metadata and verify the byte size again. Uploading the same file from desktop may allow up to 50 MB, but changing devices does not improve the image itself.
The thumbnail has black bars
Cause: Bars were baked into the artwork or a non-16:9 image was placed on a padded canvas. Fix: Rebuild the regular-video artwork on a 3840×2160 16:9 canvas and crop the source image to fill it. For a Short, rebuild it at 2160×3840 and 9:16.
The upload is accepted but the design looks soft
Cause: The original frame or artwork may have been low resolution, or compression may have removed fine detail. Fix: Start from the highest-resolution source available, avoid repeated save-and-recompress cycles and inspect the final JPG or PNG at reduced size before uploading.

The file meets the dimensions but is refused
Cause: It may be in an unsupported or unintended format, or it may exceed the limit for the device being used. Fix: Export a fresh JPG or PNG, confirm the orientation and dimensions, and check the file size against the mobile or desktop ceiling.
A landscape design does not work as a Short
Cause: Shorts use a 9:16 vertical specification, not the regular-video 16:9 layout. Fix: Create a dedicated 2160×3840 composition instead of rotating or padding the landscape file.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube publish a DPI requirement for custom thumbnails?
The cited custom-thumbnail guidance specifies pixel dimensions, aspect ratio, formats and file-size limits; it does not specify a DPI setting.
Will every screen show a 4K thumbnail at the same sharpness?
No identical-sharpness promise is stated. YouTube creates and displays images in different contexts, so the published pixel and file rules are the dependable requirements.
