The ASRock Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming K6+ is an ATX motherboard for Intel’s sixth- and seventh-generation desktop processors—not every CPU that fits an LGA1151 socket. It remains useful for repairing or extending a compatible DDR4 system, but its PCIe 3.0 platform and 64 GB listed memory limit make it a poor default choice for a new PC in 2026. Check the exact board model and CPU support before buying.
What the Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming K6+ is
This is ASRock’s Z170-chipset gaming motherboard with an LGA1151 socket. The K6+ is closely named to the Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming K6, but do not assume the two models—or their manuals, firmware, or accessories—are interchangeable. Read the model printed on the board and use the matching ASRock product and support page.
ASRock notes that the model may not be sold in every region. Its original feature list describes a 2015-era platform; it does not establish current inventory, pricing, firmware development, or driver support.

Which CPUs work—and which do not
ASRock lists sixth- and seventh-generation Intel Core i7, i5 and i3 processors, as well as supported Pentium and Celeron CPUs for this platform. Unlocked K-series processors can use the board’s overclocking features. The socket label alone is not enough to establish compatibility: Intel also used LGA1151 for later desktop generations that are not compatible with this Z170 board.

In particular, ASRock says eighth-generation desktop CPUs require an Intel 300-series motherboard. Before buying any processor, check ASRock’s CPU support list for the exact K6+ model and its required BIOS version. A full CPU-by-CPU matrix and minimum BIOS version for every processor are not established here.
Memory: practical dual-channel use beats the headline speed
The board has four DDR4 slots, supports dual-channel operation and lists a 64 GB maximum. It supports non-ECC unbuffered DDR4; ECC UDIMMs, where used, operate in non-ECC mode. DDR4-2133 is the listed standard speed, with XMP 2.0 and higher speeds available through overclocking.
ASRock advertises speeds up to DDR4-3866+, but specifies that this top setting is achievable only with one module in single-channel mode. Treat it as a configuration-specific overclocking claim, not a normal expectation for a two- or four-DIMM system. For most builds, use a matched two-module kit, check the memory support list for unusual modules, and start troubleshooting at standard settings with one module in the manual’s recommended slot.
Expansion and graphics
The three PCIe 3.0 x16 and three PCIe 3.0 x1 slots offer room for a graphics card and other add-in cards. The original specification also lists NVIDIA Quad SLI and AMD three-way CrossFireX support. Those are period features, not a reason to choose this board for a current multi-GPU system.

A current graphics card may work in a PCIe 3.0 slot, but this motherboard does not provide PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 bandwidth. ASRock’s specifications do not establish performance for current graphics cards, so do not infer parity with a newer platform from backward compatibility alone.
Storage: plan around shared connections
The board provides eight SATA 6 Gb/s ports, two SATA Express connectors and one Ultra M.2 socket. The M.2 socket supports SATA 6 Gb/s modules or PCIe Gen3 x4 modules, with a listed maximum of 32 Gb/s. The manual also documents support for an ASRock U.2 kit.
Some of these connections share lanes. As described in the K6/K6+ manual, use of the M.2 socket can affect SATA3_0, SATA3_1 and SATA Express connections. Check the manual’s storage-sharing notes before choosing ports; an apparently failed SATA device may simply be on a disabled shared connection.
A newer NVMe drive may operate at a lower, compatible link speed, but this is a PCIe Gen3 platform—not a modern Gen4 or Gen5 one. Do not assume every current NVMe drive will boot on the board; verify the drive, firmware behavior and intended operating-system setup.

USB, display, network and audio
USB and front-panel accessory
ASRock lists four USB 3.1 Gen2 10 Gb/s ports—two Type-A and two Type-C—and eight USB 3.1 Gen1 ports across front and rear connections. A Fatal1ty Mouse Port is also listed. The original package included an ASRock front USB 3.1 panel; a used-board listing may not include it, so confirm the accessory rather than assuming it comes with the board.
Display outputs
The rear outputs are DVI-D, HDMI and DisplayPort 1.2. ASRock lists up to 1920×1200 at 60 Hz over DVI-D, 4096×2160 at 24 Hz or 3840×2160 at 30 Hz over HDMI, and 4096×2304 at 60 Hz over DisplayPort. These outputs depend on usable integrated graphics in the installed processor; the motherboard does not generate video independently.
Ethernet and audio
The board uses a Killer E2400 Ethernet controller and Realtek ALC1150 audio codec with 7.1-channel HD audio, Purity Sound 3 and DTS Connect. The Killer branding does not guarantee better speed or reliability on a particular network. Operating-system driver availability, network equipment and configuration also matter, and original component choices do not guarantee a modern software experience.
Overclocking, BIOS and diagnostics
ASRock lists Digi Power, a 12-phase power design, voltage controls, BCLK full-range overclocking and Hyper BCLK Engine features. Those features permit adjustment; they do not guarantee a particular overclock. Results depend on the CPU, cooling, power supply, BIOS, memory settings and the condition of a used board.

Reuse or replace within an existing system
It can make sense if you already have a supported sixth- or seventh-generation CPU, DDR4 memory and a need to keep an existing system running. The SATA port count, expansion slots and onboard diagnostic controls may also suit a period-correct build. Confirm the exact CPU and BIOS compatibility before spending money on a processor upgrade.
Buying a used board
There is no verified current price or stock figure here, so judge value against the cost of a complete alternative system—not just the board’s asking price. Ask for evidence that the board boots and check these points before purchase:
- Inspect the LGA1151 socket for bent pins and the board for corrosion or liquid damage.
- Confirm the I/O shield and any advertised accessories, including the front USB panel, are included.
- Ask whether memory channels, DIMM slots, SATA, PCIe, USB, fan headers, audio and Ethernet have been tested.
- Check the CMOS battery, installed BIOS version and whether the intended CPU can boot with it.
- Prefer a tested listing with a clear return option over an unverified board.
Building a new PC
For a new performance system, compare a current CPU and motherboard platform instead. Account for total cost—including memory, cooler, storage, power supply and operating-system requirements—and compare memory type, PCIe generation, M.2 lane allocation, USB-C, Wi-Fi, BIOS recovery features, capacity and upgrade path. No specific current alternative or price is established here.

Basic troubleshooting checks
No POST after assembly
- Disconnect drives, USB devices and nonessential expansion cards.
- Test with only the CPU and cooler, one memory module, and the required graphics output.
- Verify the 24-pin ATX and 8-pin CPU power connectors are attached.
- Test memory modules individually in the manual’s recommended primary slot.
- Clear CMOS using the manual’s procedure, then note any repeatable Dr. Debug code.
- Inspect the CPU socket for bent pins and, if possible, test with known-good power, memory and graphics hardware.
This is general diagnostic guidance, not a diagnosis of a model-specific failure. Consult the manual for slot recommendations, CMOS steps and Dr. Debug code meanings.
M.2 drive missing or SATA ports unavailable
- Identify whether the M.2 drive is SATA or PCIe/NVMe.
- Check the manual’s lane-sharing notes and move SATA devices to ports that remain enabled with the chosen M.2 configuration.
- See whether the drive appears in UEFI storage settings before troubleshooting the operating system.
- Verify boot mode, partition format and any required storage-driver settings; do not assume every NVMe drive is bootable on this firmware.
Memory instability
- Disable XMP and test at standard DDR4-2133 settings.
- Try one module at a time in the recommended slot, then check the DIMM and memory support lists.
- Consider whether four modules, module density, BIOS version or memory-controller limits affect the configuration.
Ethernet or audio not working
Check device detection, operating-system settings and driver availability from a trustworthy source before concluding that onboard hardware has failed. The original Killer and Realtek components do not ensure that launch-era software works identically on a current operating system.
Verdict
The Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming K6+ is best viewed as a capable legacy replacement or reuse board for a compatible Skylake or Kaby Lake system. Its DDR4 support, SATA capacity, USB connectivity and diagnostic features remain useful, but its CPU-generation ceiling and PCIe 3.0 platform make it difficult to justify as the foundation of a new PC. Buy one only when the exact board and CPU combination are verified and the used unit is tested.
