Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool overlay. Windows dims the screen and lets you capture a rectangular area, freeform shape, a window, or the entire screen. The image is copied to your clipboard, and a notification lets you open it in Snipping Tool to annotate, crop, save, or share it.
The main Snipping Tool shortcut
Windows + Shift + S is the fastest way to take a still screenshot on current Windows versions. After you press the keys, the desktop dims and a compact toolbar appears at the top of the screen. Select a capture mode, make the selection if required, and release the mouse or trackpad. Windows copies the result to the clipboard immediately.
A notification normally appears in the lower-right corner. Select it to open the capture in Snipping Tool, where you can mark it up, crop it, use Text actions when available, save a file, or share the image. If you only need to paste the screenshot into an email, document, chat, or image editor, press Ctrl + V in that app instead of opening Snipping Tool.
Capture a region, window, or full screen
- Arrange the desktop so the content you need is visible.
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose one of the four modes on the overlay toolbar.
- Complete the selection for that mode.
- Use the notification to open the image for editing and saving, or paste it directly from the clipboard.
Rectangular snip
Choose the rectangular icon, then drag from one corner of the required area to the opposite corner. This is the best choice for a precise box around a web page section, dialog, chart, or paragraph.

Freeform snip
Select the freeform icon and draw an outline around the subject. Snipping Tool captures the area inside your outline, which is useful when the object is not rectangular.
Window snip
Select the window icon, then click the application window you want. Windows captures that window rather than requiring you to trace its edges. Make sure the intended window is visible and selectable before opening the overlay.
Full-screen snip
Select the full-screen icon to capture the entire display without dragging. On a multi-monitor setup, check which display the toolbar identifies before confirming the capture; use the regular full-screen shortcut described below when you want a file saved automatically.
Other Windows screenshot shortcuts
These shortcuts serve different targets and destinations. The key distinction is whether Windows places the image on the clipboard or writes a file immediately.

If you press Print Screen and nothing appears on screen, paste with Ctrl + V into Paint, an editor, or another app to confirm whether the image is on the clipboard. The Windows + Print Screen shortcut is the one to use when you want Windows to create an image file without an intermediate paste.
Save, edit, and share the capture
Select the notification preview to open the image in Snipping Tool. The editor provides drawing ink and a highlighter for callouts, cropping for trimming unwanted edges, and Text actions when that feature is available on your installation. Use the save command to choose a filename, format, and destination. Saving is a separate step from the initial clipboard capture, so a screenshot taken with Windows + Shift + S is not automatically stored in your Screenshots folder.
For a quick handoff, use the share command in Snipping Tool or paste the clipboard image into the destination app. If you need an untouched original as well as an annotated copy, save the capture before adding marks, then save the edited version under a different name.
Use a delay for menus and temporary interface elements
Some menus close as soon as you click elsewhere or press a shortcut. Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu first, choose Delay, and select a countdown from one to five seconds. Start the delayed capture, open the menu or arrange the transient interface during the countdown, then select the area when the screen dims. This method is more reliable for context menus, tooltip text, open dropdowns, and menus that disappear when focus changes.

Keyboard and accessibility edge cases
Changing Print Screen behavior
Windows lets you change the behavior of the Print Screen key in Settings so pressing it opens screen snipping instead of simply copying the full screen. The exact Settings wording can vary by Windows edition and update, so search Settings for Print Screen and enable the option that opens screen snipping.
Keyboards without PrtScn
Some compact laptops and external keyboards do not have a dedicated Print Screen key. Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as a possible alternative, depending on the device. If that combination does not work, use Windows + Shift + S, which does not require a PrtScn key.
Function-layer keyboards
On a keyboard where PrtScn is printed as a secondary function, hold the device’s Fn key while pressing the labeled key. Hardware manufacturers can map these layers differently, so the keyboard’s own documentation takes precedence when the printed shortcut fails.
Troubleshooting common problems
The overlay does not appear
- Press both Windows and Shift together, then tap S; do not use the letter printed on a function layer without Fn if your keyboard requires it.
- Open Snipping Tool from Start to verify that the app launches, then try the shortcut again.
- If Windows + Shift + S is intercepted by another utility, close keyboard-remapping or screen-capture software temporarily and retry.
The screenshot is not where expected
Windows + Shift + S and Print Screen place the image on the clipboard first. Open the notification to save it, or paste it into an app. Windows + Print Screen is the shortcut that writes a file directly to PicturesScreenshots.

The wrong window was captured
Window snip captures the window you click after opening the overlay. Bring the target window to the foreground, reopen Windows + Shift + S, choose window mode, and click the target title bar. For the currently focused window without a selection step, use Alt + Print Screen.
A menu vanished before capture
Use Snipping Tool’s Delay setting from one to five seconds. Start the countdown, open the menu, and wait for the screen to dim before selecting the area.
The image looks incomplete on a web page
The Windows shortcut captures only what is rendered on the screen at that moment. Scroll and capture additional sections, or use a browser’s full-page capture feature when you need content that extends beyond the viewport.
The notification was dismissed
The clipboard copy still exists until another clipboard operation replaces it. Paste immediately into an image editor or document; if you need a permanent copy later, open Snipping Tool and save the image when the notification is available.
