Windows feature names and automatic-save behavior can vary by Windows 10 build, keyboard and settings. If a shortcut does nothing, use the app menus and the troubleshooting steps below.
Use Windows+Shift+S for a selected area
- Press Windows+Shift+S. The screen dims and a snipping toolbar appears.
- Choose a mode: rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip or full-screen snip.
- For a rectangular capture, hold the left mouse button and drag around the exact content. Release to capture.
- Windows copies the image to the clipboard and displays a notification. Select the notification to open the capture in Snipping Tool/Snip & Sketch.
- Press Ctrl+V in Paint, an email, a document or another image-capable app to paste the clipboard copy. In the Snipping Tool window, use Save to choose PNG, JPEG or another available format.
This is the practical default for error messages, a single control, part of a web page or a region spanning multiple windows. The capture is a static image; it does not include anything outside your selection.
Capture the whole screen with Print Screen
PrtSc: copy, then paste
Press PrtSc (also labeled Print Screen or PrtScn). Windows copies the complete display to the clipboard. Open Paint or another editor, press Ctrl+V, crop or annotate if needed, and save the file. On a multi-monitor setup, the result can include all active displays, depending on the Windows build and display configuration.

Windows+PrtSc: save a file immediately
Press Windows+PrtSc. The screen briefly dims and Windows writes a full-screen image to PicturesScreenshots in your user profile. Open File Explorer and choose Pictures, then Screenshots. If that folder has been redirected to OneDrive or another location, follow the folder shown in your File Explorer sidebar.
When the key is missing or requires Fn
Compact and laptop keyboards may label the key PrtSc, share it with another key, or require Fn+PrtSc. Check the keyboard’s printed legends and try the Fn combination. A USB keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen key is a straightforward accessory for a desktop or compact keyboard that omits it.
Windows 10 can also be configured so pressing Print Screen opens screen snipping. Open Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard and look for the Print Screen shortcut setting. The exact label can differ by build.
Snipping Tool and Snip & Sketch: the full-featured built-in option
Windows 10 versions use either the classic Snipping Tool, Snip & Sketch, or an updated Snipping Tool app. Search the Start menu for Snipping Tool or Snip & Sketch; use whichever is installed.

Choose a capture mode
- Rectangular: drag a precise rectangle.
- Freeform: draw an irregular outline around the area.
- Window: select one application window without manually tracing its edges.
- Full screen: capture every visible screen.
Window mode is usually cleaner than selecting a window by hand because it avoids including neighboring desktop content. Menus that disappear when you click can be captured with a delay.

Add a delay for menus and transient controls
Open the app, choose the delay control, and select 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 seconds where offered. Select New, open the menu or hover the control you need, then wait for the countdown. The snip starts after the delay, allowing you to document context menus, tooltips and drop-down lists that would otherwise close.
Edit, annotate and extract text
After capture, use the pen and highlighter, shapes, eraser and crop tools to explain the image. Save or share from the toolbar. On versions that include text actions, OCR can copy text from the image. Microsoft documents that this OCR processing is performed locally on the device, which is useful when the screenshot contains sensitive text.
Xbox Game Bar for games
- Press Windows+G to open Xbox Game Bar.
- Open the Capture widget if it is not visible.
- Press Windows+Alt+Print Screen to take a screenshot of the game.
- Find the PNG in VideosCaptures. Game Bar associates captures with the game’s name and capture date/time.
Game Bar is optimized for gameplay and is convenient when its overlay is already open. For ordinary applications, menus, documentation and annotated support tickets, Snipping Tool is easier to target.

How to capture a delayed menu, one window or a long page
Delayed menus
Use Snipping Tool’s 1–5 second delay, start the snip, open the menu, and leave the pointer still until capture completes. If the menu closes, increase the delay or open the app’s snipping command before triggering the menu.
One application window
Choose Window snip, then click the target window. Maximize it first if you need the entire client area. Borders, shadows and title bars may be included according to the selected Windows 10 build.

Content longer than the screen
The built-in tools capture what is visible; they do not provide a universal scrolling screenshot mode. Capture successive sections and assemble them in an editor, or use the web-page API option below when the source is a URL and you need a full-page render.
Clipboard versus saved file: avoid losing a capture
- A clipboard capture is replaced the next time another application copies something. Paste it into an editor or document immediately if it matters.
- Use PNG for sharp interface text and diagrams. JPEG is smaller but can introduce compression artifacts around text.
- Name files with the application, subject and date so a folder of screenshots remains searchable.
- For confidential material, check the destination before sharing: screenshots can include notifications, other monitors, account names or visible browser tabs.
Troubleshooting Windows 10 screenshots
Nothing happens when I press PrtSc
Try Fn+PrtSc, confirm that the keyboard is detected, and test Windows+Shift+S. If Print Screen is assigned to screen snipping, pressing it may open an overlay rather than visibly copying an image. Paste into Paint to test the clipboard.

Check PicturesScreenshots, then check whether Pictures is redirected to OneDrive. If the folder is unavailable, use PrtSc and save manually from Paint or Snipping Tool. Verify that another application is not intercepting the shortcut.
The wrong window or monitor was captured
Bring the target window to the foreground and use Window snip. For a region, use Windows+Shift+S and drag only over the intended monitor. On multi-monitor systems, confirm the display arrangement in Settings > System > Display.
The game capture shortcut is disabled
Open Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar and enable Game Bar. Check Settings > Gaming > Captures for the save location and keyboard shortcut. Some games or managed PCs can block overlays.

The screenshot is black or incomplete
Protected video, hardware overlays, remote-desktop policies and anti-cheat systems can prevent normal capture. Try capturing a non-protected window, disable hardware acceleration only if your organization’s policy allows it, or use the application’s own export function.
Text in the image cannot be selected
OCR text actions are available only in versions of Snipping Tool that include them. Update the app through Microsoft Store if your organization permits updates; otherwise, paste the image into an OCR-capable editor. Review extracted text because small fonts and unusual symbols can be misread.
