For most Ubuntu 24.04 users, start with the built-in GNOME Screenshot workflow. It captures the entire display, the active window, or a rectangular area without installing anything. Choose Flameshot when you need to draw, blur, highlight, copy, or upload while taking the shot. On GNOME Wayland, Flameshot support is still described as experimental, so portal permissions can affect captures.
Choose the right Ubuntu 24.04 screenshot app
| Need | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Full screen, one window, or a selected rectangle | GNOME Screenshot | Built into the normal GNOME desktop workflow and requires no extra editor. |
| Arrows, boxes, text, blur, quick markup, or upload | Flameshot | Its official overview lists in-app editing, customizable appearance, a D-Bus interface, and Imgur upload. |
| GNOME Wayland and maximum simplicity | Try GNOME Screenshot first | Flameshot identifies GNOME Wayland support as experimental; permissions and the desktop portal can change the result. |
| Capture a public web page from a script or CI job | ScreenshotNeo | It is a URL screenshot API, not a replacement for a local desktop tool. It removes common consent banners and bills only clean captures. |
There is no documented benchmark in the available official material proving that either desktop application is universally more reliable on every Ubuntu 24.04 configuration. Your desktop session (Wayland or X11), permission prompts, and the type of capture you need matter more than a blanket ranking.
Use GNOME Screenshot without installing an app
Capture the whole screen, a window, or an area
Open the GNOME screenshot interface from the applications menu by searching for Screenshot. Select the mode for the entire screen, a window, or a user-defined area, then capture. The resulting image can be saved through the normal file chooser. The Ubuntu manpage documents these three workflows and a clipboard option; that manpage is for Ubuntu Jammy, so treat it as documentation of the utility’s functions, not proof of a specific Ubuntu 24.04 package version or default-install state.
Copy instead of saving a file
When you need to paste the image into a chat, document, or image editor, use the interface’s clipboard action where available. The same Ubuntu documentation describes a clipboard option. If your 24.04 interface presents different wording, use the visible Copy to Clipboard control rather than assuming a particular keyboard shortcut.

When GNOME Screenshot is the better choice
- You need a clean, unannotated capture quickly.
- You want the fewest moving parts on a Wayland session.
- You only need full-screen, active-window, or rectangular-area selection.
- You do not want an upload service involved in the capture process.
Install and use Flameshot on Ubuntu 24.04
Install the Noble package
Flameshot’s official Linux installation page explicitly lists Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble). Install it with Ubuntu’s package manager:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install flameshot
Start Flameshot from the applications menu. You can also launch its graphical capture command from a terminal:
flameshot gui
Drag over the region you want. The on-screen toolbar lets you annotate before saving or copying. The exact buttons and appearance can change with the installed release and your theme, so use the tooltips shown by your build.
Useful Flameshot workflow features
- Immediate editing: add marks during selection instead of opening a separate editor.
- Appearance controls: adjust the tool’s visual behavior and interface preferences.
- Automation: the project documents a D-Bus interface for integrations.
- Sharing: the overview lists Imgur upload as an available workflow.
Uploading is optional. For sensitive material, save locally or copy to the clipboard instead of sending the image to a third party.

Flameshot’s own overview labels GNOME Wayland support as experimental. A capture may therefore depend on your desktop portal and screenshot permissions. Its troubleshooting guidance specifically discusses permission and capture problems. If a selection produces a blank image, a permission prompt never appears, or the overlay cannot access the screen, consult the current Flameshot troubleshooting documentation for your installed release. This is vendor guidance, not an independent test of every Ubuntu 24.04 hardware and desktop combination.
Practical decision guide
Pick GNOME Screenshot when…
Choose the built-in utility for routine documentation, bug reports, and quick sharing where the image itself is the finished product. It avoids adding a resident third-party tool and covers the three basic capture targets.

Pick Flameshot when…
Choose Flameshot when explaining a UI requires arrows, rectangles, text, blur, or other marks immediately after selection. Its editing and sharing workflow can save a separate editor step, but Wayland behavior may require troubleshooting.
Keep both installed
They serve different jobs. Use GNOME Screenshot for a predictable basic capture and Flameshot for annotated work. If both register global shortcuts, assign distinct combinations in Settings → Keyboard → View and Customize Shortcuts → Custom Shortcuts, or disable one application’s shortcut to avoid competing overlays. Labels can vary slightly by Ubuntu release.

For repeatable local jobs, invoke Flameshot from a terminal and inspect the generated file or clipboard result. A simple graphical capture is:
flameshot gui
Because the interactive area still requires a person, this is best for scripts that need a consistent launch command rather than unattended CI. For unattended web-page rendering, use a URL screenshot service instead of trying to drive a desktop session.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Send one GET request with a URL to receive a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is useful when the thing you need to capture is a web page—not your Ubuntu desktop—and when you want a repeatable request in a build, script, or AI-agent workflow.

Why this differs from a desktop screenshot
- Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each cleanup step can be turned off.
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed (
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billed). - The MCP server exposes
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdfto Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. - There are 63 options, including full-page lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, arbitrary viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings and page ranges, custom CSS or JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, selector waits, delay or network-idle waits, ad/tracker/request blocking, headers, cookies, user agent, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, async webhooks, bulk capture for 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification.
- Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can reduce migration changes.

The Screenshot app is missing
Search the applications menu for Screenshot. If it is not present, use the Ubuntu package information for your release and install the GNOME screenshot utility through the standard package manager; do not assume the Jammy manpage identifies the Noble package version.
Flameshot will not capture on Wayland
Confirm that you are running GNOME Wayland, look for a desktop permission or portal prompt, and retry after granting it. If the overlay or result remains blank, follow Flameshot’s current Wayland troubleshooting guidance. GNOME Screenshot is the sensible fallback for a basic capture.
The image is blank or a page never finishes
For a local app, retry after the window is fully rendered and check portal permissions. For ScreenshotNeo, inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, and failed loads are identified and not billed.
Annotations are clipped or hard to read
Expand the selected region before drawing, capture at a larger scale, or use Flameshot’s appearance and editing controls. For a web page captured through ScreenshotNeo, set the viewport, device preset, retina scale, custom CSS, or element selector explicitly.

FAQ
Is Flameshot free?
The supplied official material describes Flameshot as an installable Linux application but does not establish a separate Ubuntu 24.04 price. Install it through Ubuntu’s package system and review the project’s current licensing information if that detail matters to your organization.
Can these tools capture a scrolling web page?
The desktop workflows described here select a screen, window, or area. They are not documented in the supplied material as automatic full-page web renderers. ScreenshotNeo provides full-page URL capture with lazy images loaded.
Should I uninstall GNOME Screenshot after installing Flameshot?
No. Keeping both lets you use the built-in workflow for uncomplicated captures and Flameshot when annotation is the priority.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which app should a new Ubuntu 24.04 user try first?
Try GNOME Screenshot first for full-screen, window, and area captures. Install Flameshot when you need in-capture annotation or its documented sharing and integration features.
Does ScreenshotNeo replace a desktop screenshot utility?
No. ScreenshotNeo captures web pages from URLs through an API or MCP server; GNOME Screenshot and Flameshot capture what is displayed on your Ubuntu desktop.
The Bottom Line
Use GNOME Screenshot for straightforward Ubuntu desktop captures, Flameshot for annotation-heavy work, and ScreenshotNeo when a reproducible web-page capture API or MCP workflow is what you actually need.
