China’s Long March Rockets Launch Yaogan-50 01 and Guowang Satellites on January 13, 2026

China conducted two separate orbital missions on January 13, 2026: a modified Long March-6 carrying the Yaogan-50 01 remote-sensing satellite from Taiyuan, followed about an hour later by a Long March-8A carrying the 18th group of low-Earth-orbit internet satellites from Hainan. Both missions were reported successful, but “new orbits” is imprecise: the spacecraft were inserted into their intended orbital regimes.

Two launches, two payloads

These were not a single dual-payload flight. They used different rockets, launch centers and spacecraft types.

Official launch time 10:16 p.m. Beijing time 11:25 p.m. Beijing time
Payload Yaogan-50 01 remote-sensing satellite 18th group of low-orbit satellite-internet spacecraft
Publicly stated result Entered its planned orbit Entered its planned orbit
Publicly stated purpose Land surveys, crop-yield estimation, disaster prevention and mitigation Deployment of China’s satellite-internet network

The Yaogan launch was described by Xinhua as China’s first successful orbital launch of 2026 and the 624th flight of the Long March family (Xinhua).

What Yaogan-50 01 is known to do

Chinese official reporting identifies Yaogan-50 01 as a remote-sensing spacecraft. Its stated applications are national land surveys, estimating crop yields, and preventing and mitigating disasters (CNSA; Xinhua).

That description is not a complete technical specification. The public announcements do not identify the satellite’s sensor type, imaging resolution, mass, power system or full operational orbit. “Yaogan” should therefore not automatically be translated as “spy satellite.” Earth-observation data can support both civilian and national-security activities, but any military tasking for this individual spacecraft remains unconfirmed.

Confirmed, inferred and undisclosed

  • Confirmed: It is a remote-sensing satellite and reached its planned orbit.
  • Reasonable inference: Observation data could have civilian and dual-use value.
  • Not publicly established: The exact instrument, resolution, spacecraft specifications and operational assignments.

Why the orbit drew attention

Independent launch tracking catalogs the mission as Long March-6A and reports an unusual, highly inclined or possibly retrograde low-Earth-orbit insertion (Space Launch Now). A retrograde orbit travels opposite Earth’s usual rotation and generally requires more launch energy than a conventional prograde trajectory.

Such an orbit can be selected for coverage geometry, observation requirements, launch-site constraints or other mission-specific reasons. It is noteworthy, but it does not by itself prove a military purpose. Chinese official reports provide only the broader statement that the satellite entered its planned orbit, and the exact operational parameters remain incompletely disclosed.

What Guowang means

Guowang—literally “national network”—is China’s planned state-backed low-Earth-orbit satellite-internet constellation, associated with China Satellite Network Group. The project is intended to provide broadband communications from orbit and build a large Chinese space-based communications infrastructure.

In launch tracking, the January mission is identified as SatNet LEO Group 18. The official China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) announcement calls it the 18th group of low-orbit satellite-internet spacecraft but does not state the spacecraft count in its accessible English release (CASC). Space Launch Now catalogs it as a nine-satellite deployment (Space Launch Now). Thus, nine is an independent tracking figure, not an officially announced Chinese total.

The Long March-8A vehicle

CASC describes the Long March-8A used here as approximately 50.5 meters long, with a liftoff mass of 371 metric tons and about 480 tons of liftoff thrust. The company says the vehicle is designed for constellation launches to medium and low Earth orbit (CASC). Those numbers describe the rocket, not the mass of the satellite group.

Why another Guowang batch matters

Incremental constellation construction

An “18th group” designation shows deployment through repeated batches rather than a one-off demonstration. Each launch adds spacecraft toward a larger network, while the system still depends on orbital-plane management, ground stations, spectrum coordination, user terminals, software and replacement launches.

Communications capacity with strategic value

A mature national LEO network could support broadband access, government communications, aviation and maritime links, and other services that do not rely on foreign satellite systems. This launch alone does not establish global coverage or immediate consumer availability; those outcomes require many more spacecraft and supporting infrastructure.

Launch assignments can change

Long March-8A carried this group, but it should not be assumed that every future Guowang mission will use only Long March rockets. China is developing a broader launch ecosystem, and vehicle assignments may vary.

What the two-launch day demonstrates

The strongest evidence-based conclusion is operational rather than sensational: China conducted parallel missions from two spaceports for two different mission classes on the same date. Taiyuan handled an inland Earth-observation launch, while Hainan handled a coastal communications-constellation deployment. Both used Long March-family vehicles and both were reported successful.

The pairing illustrates complementary capabilities: remote sensing for observing Earth and a developing LEO network for moving data. It does not establish a launch record, prove a particular military role for Yaogan-50 01, or show that Guowang is already providing broad commercial service.
