These tools capture visible screen pixels—not an entire webpage extending below the browser window. If you need a JPG and your capture tool does not offer JPEG, save the capture first, then export or convert it with an image editor.
First decide what you need to capture
There are two different jobs people describe as taking a screenshot of part of a Chrome window:
- A screen region: a rectangle of what is currently visible on your display. It can include webpage content, Chrome’s tabs or toolbar, or both, depending on where you drag.
- A webpage area: content inside the site, possibly including content below the visible browser viewport. A region capture does not scroll the page or include what is off-screen.
The steps below capture visible pixels using the operating system’s built-in tool. If you need an image of a URL or a specific page element without manually selecting your screen, see the ScreenshotNeo option after the platform steps. That is a separate webpage-capture workflow, not a way to select pixels from an already-open local Chrome window.
Capture a Chrome region on Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Bring Chrome to the front, open the page, and position the content you want inside the visible browser window. Close or move anything you do not want included.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The Snipping Tool capture overlay opens.
- Choose Rectangular mode for a selected region. Drag over the required area and release. If you want the whole Chrome window rather than a region, choose Window mode and select Chrome.
- Open the Snipping Tool notification or editor if it does not appear automatically. Save or share the captured snip from there.
Microsoft documents rectangular, window, freeform and full-screen capture modes for Snipping Tool, and describes the shortcut as opening the capture overlay. The capture is copied into the Snipping Tool editor; do not assume that pressing the shortcut alone has already saved a file. Follow the save step in the editor. Microsoft’s cited instructions do not establish a universal PNG or JPG choice in Save As, so if the required format is not offered, open the capture in an image editor and export it in that format. Capture a Chrome region on macOS
- Arrange Chrome so the visible portion you want is on screen.
- For a rectangular selection, press Shift-Command-4. Drag across the region and release.
- For a whole window, press Shift-Command-4, then press Space and click the Chrome window.
- Alternatively, press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot controls. Choose a window or selected portion, and use the available options for matters such as a timer, pointer or click display, and save location.
Apple Support says: “Screenshots are saved as .png files and screen recordings are saved as .mov files.” That means the documented built-in screenshot result is PNG. If you specifically need JPG/JPEG, open the saved PNG in an image editor and use its export or save-as format selector to create a JPEG. Check the resulting file rather than just renaming its extension: changing “.png” to “.jpg” does not itself convert the image. Apple’s instructions are in the Mac Screenshot guide.
Capture a Chrome region on a Chromebook
- Show the webpage area you want in Chrome and make sure it is not covered by another window.
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows to open ChromeOS Screen Capture controls. The Show windows key is the Chromebook key used to display open windows.
- Select partial-screen capture and drag or select the required region. Choose window capture instead if you need the whole Chrome window.
- Find the saved capture in Downloads by default, unless you have selected another folder in the capture settings.
Google’s Chromebook guide documents partial-screen and window capture and says screenshots and recordings save to Downloads by default, with an option to choose another folder. It does not specify a universal PNG/JPG selection in the cited instructions. Inspect the saved file; if it is not the format you need, open it in an editor that supports JPEG export. Which built-in method should you use?

These are operating-system workflows, not one Chrome shortcut that behaves identically everywhere. In every case, the selected area is the visible screen. To capture a full webpage beyond the viewport, use a workflow intended for webpage capture rather than assuming a screen-region selection will include off-screen content.

How to get a PNG or JPG file
PNG
On a Mac, the cited Apple guide explicitly identifies PNG as the screenshot format. On Windows and Chromebook, the cited pages do not confirm a guaranteed format choice, so inspect the saved file or its save dialog. PNG is appropriate when you need the format Apple documents or when an editor’s PNG export is required.
JPG or JPEG
JPG and JPEG refer to the same image format. If the built-in capture tool does not offer JPEG, save the screenshot, open it in an image editor, choose Export or Save As, and select JPEG/JPG in the format control. Verify both the selected format and the resulting file. A JPEG export may change image quality or file size according to the editor’s settings; use its quality control if one is presented.
Check what you actually saved
- Look at the editor’s selected export format or the file’s properties, rather than relying only on its displayed name.
- Do not treat a renamed extension as a conversion. Export the image in the target format.
- Keep the original capture if you may later need to export another format or a higher-quality version.

Troubleshooting
The shortcut does not start a capture
- Windows: make sure you press the Windows logo key, Shift and S together. If the overlay appears, select a capture mode rather than expecting an image file to be saved immediately.
- Mac: use Command rather than Control. Shift-Command-4 selects an area; adding Space changes the action to window selection.
- Chromebook: use the Show windows key with Shift and Ctrl. If the keyboard layout differs, open Screen Capture from ChromeOS controls instead of guessing a different shortcut.
The capture includes tabs, toolbars or other screen content
The selection is a rectangle of screen pixels, not a semantic selection of webpage content. Drag more tightly around the page content, or use window capture if you want Chrome’s full window. If a notification or another window covers the target, dismiss it and capture again.

The result misses content lower on the page
A region tool captures only what was visible at the time. Scroll the desired content into view and capture separate regions, or use a webpage screenshot workflow that supports full-page capture. The saved file is PNG, but the task requires JPG
Use the image editor’s JPEG/JPG export or save-as option. If the format selector is not visible, look for an export command or a file-type dropdown. Confirm the exported file’s type; changing the extension alone is not sufficient.

On Chromebook, check Downloads unless you changed the save folder in Screen Capture settings. On Windows, return to the Snipping Tool notification or editor and use its save action. On Mac, check the location selected in Screenshot controls.

A webpage API capture is blank or blocked
A URL-based capture depends on loading the page; it is not a guaranteed substitute for an on-screen capture. Choosing the right workflow
- Use the built-in region tool when you need exactly the visible portion of Chrome as it appears on your screen.
- Use window mode when you need the whole Chrome window, including its browser interface.
- Convert or export afterward when your operating system’s capture workflow does not expose the required PNG/JPG choice.
- Use a URL-based screenshot API when you need a repeatable webpage capture or an element/full-page capture rather than a manual desktop selection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use one shortcut to capture part of Chrome on Windows, Mac and Chromebook?
No. The documented shortcuts and controls differ by operating system: Windows uses Windows + Shift + S, macOS uses Shift-Command-4 or Shift-Command-5, and Chromebook uses Shift + Ctrl + Show windows.
Does a partial screenshot include the whole webpage?
No. A screen-region capture records what is visible in the selected screen area. Content below the viewport is not included unless you bring it into view or use a webpage-capture method.
