WebMCP is not universally supported. As checked on September 29, 2026, the Web Machine Learning Community Group lists a Chrome 149 origin trial and an Edge 150 origin trial. Chrome also documents a local-development flag for compatible Chromium builds. These are experimental testing routes, not evidence that WebMCP is enabled by default for every Chrome or Edge user. The reviewed official status page does not establish native WebMCP support or a ship date for Firefox or Safari.
Which browsers support WebMCP?
The clearest current answer comes from the WebMCP implementation-status page, read alongside Chrome’s implementation documentation:
| Browser | Evidence listed on September 29, 2026 | Availability channel | What you can reasonably promise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Chrome | Origin trial listed for Chrome 149; Chrome documentation also describes a testing flag. | Origin trial or local developer flag | Developers can test under the documented conditions. Do not describe this as universal stable support. |
| Microsoft Edge | Origin trial listed for Edge 150. The status page points to Chromium implementation information. | Origin trial | An experimental Chromium route is listed. Confirm current Edge trial eligibility before enrollment. |
| Mozilla Firefox | The status page links to Mozilla’s standards-position and Bugzilla material but lists no implementation or trial. | None established by the reviewed evidence | Do not claim usable native WebMCP support. |
| Apple Safari | The status page links to WebKit’s standards-position material but lists no implementation or trial. | None established by the reviewed evidence | Do not claim usable native WebMCP support. |
A Chromium engine alone is not proof that a branded browser exposes WebMCP. Availability depends on the browser channel, version, origin-trial enrollment, flags, document policy and the agent client being used.
What WebMCP actually provides
WebMCP is a proposed browser-facing API that lets a website expose structured tools to an agent operating on the live page. Chrome’s guide describes two authoring styles:
#1 Best Overall
- JavaScript APIs: the page registers tools programmatically and controls their inputs and actions.
- HTML form annotations: ordinary forms can describe actions so an agent can discover and invoke them without replacing the page’s user interface.
The current implementation covers tools. It does not expose the backend MCP Resources or Prompts primitives described in Chrome’s documentation. That distinction matters when you design an integration.
WebMCP versus backend MCP
| Characteristic | WebMCP | Backend MCP |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Inside the website and the user’s active browser tab | On a persistent server or service connection |
| Lifetime | Ephemeral: access ends when the tab is closed or navigated away | Can persist independently of a particular page |
| Works without a live browser? | No; a client must visit the page to discover its tools | Yes, subject to the server and client arrangement |
| Capabilities in the current guide | Tools exposed by the page | Backend tools, resources and prompts as supported by the MCP implementation |
These models can complement one another. Keep durable business rules, data access and background jobs in a backend MCP service, and expose context-sensitive actions—such as a form submission or a control visible only on the current page—through WebMCP.
How to test WebMCP in Chrome
Chrome’s implementation guide describes an early-preview path. It specifies Chromium 146.0.7672.0 or later with the testing flag enabled; the implementation-status page separately lists the Chrome 149 origin trial. Treat those as different channels, and record which one you use in bug reports.
- Check the build. Open Chrome’s About page and confirm that the Chromium version meets the guide’s 146.0.7672.0-or-later requirement. A later build may instead be covered by the listed origin trial.
- Use a secure, eligible page. Test from a secure context and an origin-isolated document. Do not put API keys or other secrets in browser code.
- Open the flag page. Enter
chrome://flags/#enable-webmcp-testingin the address bar. - Enable WebMCP testing. Change the flag to Enabled.
- Relaunch Chrome. The APIs are not active until the browser restarts. The implementation-status page uses the equivalent
about:flags#enable-webmcp-testingwording; use the URL format accepted by your Chromium build. - Load your page and connect an agent client. The client must visit the page to discover its tools. A browser flag by itself does not provide an agent, and an agent that lacks WebMCP support will not show the tools.
- Exercise safe actions first. Verify discovery, input validation and visible confirmation before testing changes to account data, purchases or other irreversible operations.
Flags are for local development, not a promise that ordinary visitors have the feature. For a shared test environment, check whether the current Chrome origin-trial enrollment requirements have changed before distributing instructions.

Does Edge support WebMCP?
Yes, experimentally: the implementation-status page lists an origin trial in Edge 150. That entry is not the same as a stable, default-on release. Edge trial availability can depend on enrollment, region, account and the exact build, so verify the current trial information before writing a setup guide or asking users to opt in.
Do not infer that every Edge channel accepts Chrome’s local flag or that a flag guarantees identical behavior. For reproducible tests, document the Edge version, trial status, operating system, page origin and agent client. If the trial is unavailable, provide a normal user-interface path or a backend MCP fallback rather than blocking the workflow.
Is WebMCP available in Firefox or Safari?
The reviewed official evidence does not establish usable native support in either browser. The implementation-status page links to Mozilla’s standards-position and Bugzilla information for Firefox and to WebKit’s standards-position information for Safari, but it lists no implementation or origin trial and gives no ship date.
That is a statement about the evidence available on September 29, 2026—not a prediction that either browser will never implement WebMCP. Keep feature detection and a non-WebMCP path in your application. Do not identify a standards-position page as browser support.

Requirements that can make a supported browser fail
Origin isolation
Chrome’s documentation says WebMCP APIs require an origin-isolated document. A page that lacks the required isolation headers may load normally while its WebMCP surface remains unavailable. Configure and verify the isolation policy in the environment where you test, including staging; a local page that differs from production can hide this failure.
Permissions Policy
The APIs are controlled by the tools Permissions Policy, which defaults to self. A top-level page can use its own tools under that default. A cross-origin iframe needs an explicit policy allowance, and both the embedding page and the framed origin must be configured consistently.
Secure context
Follow the guide’s secure-context requirement. Use HTTPS (or the browser’s documented secure localhost behavior for development) and check that redirects do not land on an insecure origin.
Page lifecycle
Tools belong to the live page. Navigating, closing the tab or replacing the document ends the agent’s access. A long-running task should persist its durable state in a backend rather than assuming the tab will remain open.

Agent and client support
WebMCP support in the browser does not mean every AI client can discover or call WebMCP tools. Test the complete chain: browser build, page policy, tool registration and the particular agent client. Report failures with all four details.
Security and product-design guidance
- Keep secrets server-side. Chrome’s guide says not to place secrets in client-side browser code. Use authenticated, least-privilege server calls for sensitive data.
- Require confirmation for high-impact actions. Destructive or irreversible operations should expose a user-visible confirmation step instead of allowing an agent to perform them silently.
- Validate every argument. Treat tool input as untrusted, enforce authorization on the server and return narrowly scoped results.
- Design for absence. If WebMCP is disabled, unsupported or blocked by policy, the page should still offer its ordinary controls or a backend route.
- Separate discovery from authority. A tool being visible to an agent is not permission to perform every underlying business operation.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No WebMCP tools appear | Unsupported browser build, flag disabled, origin trial not active or agent lacks WebMCP discovery. | Record the exact browser version and channel; enable the documented flag for local Chrome testing or verify trial enrollment; then test with a client known to support WebMCP. |
| The flag page has no matching entry | The build has removed, renamed or gated the experimental flag. | Check the current Chrome implementation guide and implementation-status page. Do not substitute an unrelated AI flag. |
| Tools work top-level but not in an iframe | The tools Permissions Policy blocks the cross-origin frame. |
Add the explicit policy allowance required for the framed origin and retest in a secure context. |
| Registration succeeds locally but fails in staging | Staging is not origin-isolated, uses HTTP, or sends different response headers. | Compare isolation headers, HTTPS, redirects and Permissions Policy between environments. |
| An agent loses access midway through a task | The page navigated or the tab closed. | Persist durable work on a backend and treat WebMCP as a live-page interface, not a job queue. |
| A destructive action runs without user approval | The tool design omitted a confirmation guardrail. | Insert an explicit, user-visible confirmation and enforce authorization server-side. |
Documenting browser tests with ScreenshotNeo
When you need visual evidence of a WebMCP test page—before and after a tool call—you can capture the URL without maintaining a headless-browser script. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it is not a WebMCP implementation, but it can document the page your browser test used.
Or skip the browser setup:
One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The service accepts the cookie or consent banner before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options, then call the endpoint with your test URL:

A practical support strategy
- Implement your page’s ordinary controls and backend authorization first.
- Add WebMCP tools behind feature detection and keep actions aligned with the visible interface.
- Test Chrome’s local flag path separately from the Chrome 149 and Edge 150 origin-trial paths.
- Run the same tests with the
toolspolicy, origin isolation and HTTPS that production will use. - Verify behavior in Firefox and Safari as unsupported-browser fallbacks, not as WebMCP clients.
- Log the browser version, trial or flag state, page origin, policy headers and agent client with every result.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should my site do for visitors whose browser has no WebMCP?
Keep the normal buttons and forms fully usable, and route sensitive or long-running work through your authenticated backend. WebMCP should enhance the interface, not be the only way to complete a task.
Where should I recheck WebMCP availability before publishing setup instructions?
Check the implementation-status page and the current Chrome WebMCP documentation. Origin-trial versions, eligibility and flag names are experimental and can change.
