There is no single universal screenshot hotkey. Choose your operating system first, then decide whether you need the whole display, a window, or a selected region. The shortcuts and default save or clipboard behavior differ on Windows 10/11, macOS, and ChromeOS.

These shortcuts are documented by Microsoft, Apple, and Google. Key names can change with a non-standard or external keyboard.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Capture a region with the snipping overlay
Press Windows+Shift+S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool overlay appears. Choose a rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip, depending on the controls shown on your Windows version. Select the area or window, and the result is copied into Snipping Tool, where you can annotate, save, or share it. Capture the entire display immediately
Press PrtScn to copy the full screen to the clipboard. Open Paint, an image editor, an email, or another app and press Ctrl+V to paste it. On some keyboards the key is labelled Print Screen, PrtSc, or shares a key with another function; use the keyboard’s Fn modifier if the printed label requires it.

Change what PrtScn does
Windows includes a setting that can make PrtScn open screen snipping instead of placing a full-screen image directly on the clipboard. If pressing PrtScn opens an overlay on your computer, that setting is enabled; if it only places an image in the clipboard, it is disabled. This lets you keep the familiar key while choosing between immediate full-screen capture and area selection.
Use Snipping Tool for a still or a video
Snipping Tool supports freeform, rectangular, window, and full-screen still captures. Windows+Shift+R starts a video snip, which records a region rather than taking a still image. Use the still-image shortcuts when you need a single frame.
Windows capture problems
- Nothing appears after PrtScn: the image is probably on the clipboard. Paste it into an image or document app before looking for a file.
- Windows+Shift+S does not respond: verify that the Windows key is not locked by a gaming-keyboard mode, then open Snipping Tool from Start and try its capture button.
- The wrong monitor is captured: use a window or rectangular snip and drag around the intended display, or use full-screen capture and crop afterward.
- You expected a video: use Windows+Shift+R; it is separate from the still screenshot commands.
macOS
Choose the built-in Mac shortcut
Apple’s whole-screen command is Shift-Command-3. For a selected portion, use Shift-Command-4, then drag across the area. To capture a particular window or menu, use the area command and press Space bar before clicking the window or menu. Apple states the whole-screen instruction as: “To take a screenshot, press and then release these three keys together: Shift, Command, and 3.”

Open the Screenshot app
On macOS Mojave 10.14 or later, Shift-Command-5 opens the Screenshot app. Its controls provide whole-screen, window, and selected-area stills, as well as screen-recording options, a timer, and a save-location control. Mac screenshots save to the desktop by default. Hold Control while using the corresponding screenshot shortcut to put the result on the clipboard instead of relying on the desktop file. You can also use the thumbnail that briefly appears after capture and its menu to adjust how the image is handled.
Mac-specific limitations
- Some apps can prevent screenshots of their windows. If a particular app produces a blank or blocked image, try its own export command or capture a different window.
- On a MacBook or compact keyboard, the function row may require Fn for keys that are printed as secondary functions.
- Apple notes that screenshot-format choices depend on supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later; the basic keyboard shortcuts remain the standard way to capture.
Chromebook and ChromeOS
Full-screen and partial captures
Press Ctrl+Show Windows for a full-screen screenshot. Press Shift+Ctrl+Show Windows to start a partial screenshot and then select the region. To open the broader capture controls, use Ctrl+Shift+Show Windows; the current Screen Capture interface offers full-screen, partial, and window choices.

Where ChromeOS puts the image
A screenshot is copied to the clipboard and saved in Downloads by default. The capture settings let you choose a different destination folder. This is useful when you take many captures and want them separated from ordinary downloads.
External keyboards and missing keys
The Show Windows key is normally a rectangle with two lines beside it. Some external Windows or Mac keyboards do not have that key. Google documents Ctrl+Shift+F5 as an alternative when it is absent. For shortcuts that use Search or Launcher, Google says a Windows key or Command key can substitute on compatible external keyboards.

Google’s shortcut list is scoped to US Chromebooks with a standard English QWERTY layout. On another layout, or on a device with remapped keys, open the Chromebook’s shortcut settings and use the labels shown there rather than assuming the printed key positions match.

The main distinction is whether the key combination captures immediately or opens a selection interface. PrtScn and the whole-screen Mac and Chromebook commands act immediately; the selection commands pause for you to define an area.
Reliable screenshot workflow
- Identify the platform and keyboard: check whether you are on Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS and whether an external keyboard changes the key labels.
- Choose the capture scope: use whole-screen capture for everything visible, a window command for one application, or a region command to avoid unrelated content.
- Check the destination: paste a clipboard capture into an editor, or look on the Mac desktop or Chromebook Downloads folder for the saved file.
- Review sensitive content: crop account details, notifications, or unrelated browser tabs before sharing the image.
- Name and store the file: use a descriptive filename if the screenshot will become documentation, a bug report, or a support attachment.

Troubleshooting checklist
The shortcut does not work at all
Check the operating system, unlock the Windows key if a keyboard utility disabled it, and test the keys in a plain text editor. On laptops, try the keyboard’s Fn modifier. On ChromeOS, verify that the device is using the expected Search or Launcher mapping.
The image is missing
First check the expected destination: clipboard for Windows PrtScn, desktop for the standard Mac file capture, and Downloads plus clipboard on Chromebook. If you used a selection overlay, finish the drag or click the window before searching for a file.
The wrong content was captured
Use a window or region mode instead of a whole-screen command. For a long web page, a desktop hotkey captures only what is currently visible; use a full-page website capture workflow when the page extends beyond the viewport.
The keyboard labels do not match
Do not substitute Command, Windows, Search, and Show Windows by appearance alone. Check the device’s shortcut settings or the manufacturer’s layout. Google specifically limits its published Chromebook combinations to a standard US QWERTY keyboard, and external-keyboard mappings can differ.
