Use Google Search Console to track search performance over time, and save dated screenshots when you need visual evidence of a page rendering or a search results page (SERP). These are three different records: Search Console metrics, a screenshot of Google’s rendering of your page, and a screenshot of a SERP. Each answers a different question; none should be treated as a substitute for the others.
Choose the evidence that answers your question
Before saving an image, decide what you need to know. Search Console records performance metrics. URL Inspection can show how Google rendered a page in a successful live test. A SERP screenshot records what a particular results page looked like at a particular check. Mixing these up can make a report look more conclusive than its evidence supports.

Google says search results vary with time, place, device, and the searcher’s recent history. So a query in Search Console does not guarantee that repeating the same query manually will show your site in an identical position. Google’s Performance report guidance explains the report; it should not be mistaken for a promise about an individual search.
Track search performance in Search Console
Set a consistent reporting scope
- Open the property for the site you want to analyze in Google Search Console and go to Performance. Choose the appropriate search type and date range.
- Review clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position together. A change in one metric alone may not explain the whole performance picture.
- Use the report’s dimensions—such as query, page, country, device, search appearance, and date—to narrow the question. Keep the selected scope consistent when comparing periods.
- When sharing results, record the property, search type, date range, and dimensions used. If you save a chart screenshot, label it with those details and identify it as a visualization of the report, not raw or complete data.
Average position is an aggregate report metric. It summarizes performance across the report’s scope; it does not mean that every user, location, or device saw your page at precisely that position. Likewise, a screenshot of a report chart is useful as a dated visual, but it is not a replacement for the underlying metrics and their selected filters.

Keep a useful change log
For recurring reporting, save the period and filters alongside the image or exported record. Note notable site changes or campaign milestones separately rather than implying that a screenshot proves why a metric moved. A series of consistently scoped reports is more useful for trend analysis than isolated images captured with different settings.
Capture how Google rendered a page
Use URL Inspection when the question is about Google’s rendering of a specific page, rather than where it appeared in a result list. Run a live test for the inspected URL and save the screenshot only when the live test succeeds. Label the image with the URL and capture date so that later readers know which page and inspection it documents. Google describes the screenshot as available for a successful live test. Interpret this image narrowly: it shows the page as rendered during that live test. It does not show a historical search-results page, establish a ranking, or guarantee that the page appears in Search results. A positive inspection result is not the same thing as search visibility.

Save a SERP screenshot for a recorded rank
If you need to see the results page used to determine a recorded ranking, choose a rank tracker that explicitly provides SERP screenshots. BrightLocal documents screenshot access in its Local Rank Tracker reports and says those screenshots are stored for 45 days. Use screenshots as records, not universal rankings
A SERP screenshot helps answer “what did this tracked result page look like at this check?” It cannot establish that all users saw the same layout or ranking. Search results vary with time, place, device, and search history, and a retained screenshot is a snapshot rather than a complete record of every possible result. Preserve the tracker’s associated query and check context with the image when you use it in a client or stakeholder report.

Keep Search Console and Analytics separate
Search Console and Google Analytics describe different parts of the journey. Search Console covers search performance; Analytics covers interactions on the site. Google states: “The source of truth for Search performance will always be Search Console, while the source of truth for behavior inside your site will be Google Analytics.” Google Search Central: Using Search Console and Google Analytics Data for SEO.
Clicks in Search Console and sessions in Analytics will not necessarily match. Google notes that the systems use different methods and are authoritative for their respective domains. In reporting, show the tools, periods, and metrics separately rather than presenting different counts as if one were a correction of the other.

Troubleshoot misleading or incomplete evidence
A manual search does not match Search Console
This does not by itself indicate a reporting error. Search results can vary by time, place, device, and recent search history. Use Search Console for reported performance over the selected scope; use a tracker’s retained screenshot to inspect the SERP associated with its check.
A URL Inspection screenshot is missing
Google documents the screenshot as available for a successful live test. Check whether the live test succeeded, and do not treat the absence of an image as evidence of a historical ranking. A live-test rendering and a SERP record answer different questions.
Stakeholder counts do not agree
First check that the Search Console property, date range, search type, and report dimensions match the intended analysis. Then keep Search Console clicks and Analytics sessions in separate labeled fields: Google says the systems use different methods and are sources of truth for different domains.
