Portable or installed
The Windows installation guide documents WinGet, Scoop, Chocolatey and manual installation. Manual downloads distinguish an MSI installer from a portable ZIP; the ZIP does not require installation and can be useful on a machine where you do not have administrator rights. The Windows downloads are listed as 64-bit, so confirm architecture and current requirements before choosing a package.

OBS Studio: use it for video and production

When a capture card is appropriate
A capture card is an input for an external HDMI or other video source. It is unnecessary for ordinary desktop screenshots and standard recording of the Windows display. Troubleshooting
The capture is blank or incomplete
For a local tool, confirm that the correct monitor or window is selected and that the application is not minimizing or blocking capture. For OBS, verify the source type and scene visibility. For a scrolling capture, check whether the page uses dynamic content that changes while it scrolls.
Text or secrets remain visible
Redaction is an editing step, not a guarantee from the capture tool. Zoom into the exported image and inspect every corner, browser tab and notification before sharing.
OBS game capture does not work from a ZIP install
If OBS was installed outside Program Files, review the Windows guide’s permission requirement for ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES, especially with UWP game capture. An installed build may avoid portable-directory permission issues.
