Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSet up a new Chromebook by connecting it to the internet, signing in with the Google Account that should own it, creating a sign-in PIN, installing ChromeOS updates, and then checking synchronization, files, apps, accessories, security, and backups. If the Chromebook is used or refurbished, Powerwash it before entering the new owner’s account.
Before you turn on the Chromebook
Gather the Chromebook and charger, a Wi-Fi connection, your Google Account email address and password, and the phone or security key used for two-step verification. If you are moving from Windows or macOS, also have the old computer, a USB flash drive or external drive, or access to your cloud-storage account. A Bluetooth mouse, keyboard, headphones, printer, monitor, or USB-C hub can be connected later.
Google lists an internet connection and Google Account credentials as the basic requirements for setup. Menu names can differ by model, ChromeOS version, account type, and administrator policy; use the equivalent label shown on your screen. Google’s setup requirements and first-boot steps provide the current flow.
Choose the Chromebook’s owner account first
On a personal Chromebook, the first Google Account used during setup normally becomes the owner. The owner controls important settings, including who may sign in and whether guest browsing is available. Use the account of the person who will primarily manage the device—not a temporary account that you plan to replace.

Schools and employers can be different: an organization may own and manage the Chromebook, restrict accounts and apps, control updates, or prevent a user from resetting it. Google explains the distinction in its owner and sign-in documentation.
| Situation | Best starting arrangement |
|---|---|
| One personal user | That person’s personal Google Account |
| Several regular family users | Separate accounts for each person |
| Young child | Parent-supervised account or an appropriate school account |
| Temporary borrower | Guest mode |
| School or employer device | Organization-managed account |
| Used or refurbished Chromebook | Powerwash first, unless the administrator must perform the reset |
Complete first-time setup
- Connect the charger, especially if the battery is low, then open the lid or press the power button.
- Choose the language and keyboard layout.
- Enable accessibility features if required.
- Select a Wi-Fi network and enter its password.
- Accept the terms of service.
- Sign in with the Google Account intended to own the Chromebook, or create an account if the setup screen offers that option.
- Enter the full email address or phone number, password, and any requested two-step verification code.
Do not confuse the Chromebook sign-in account with a separate work, school, or Chrome browser profile. After sign-in, Chrome can restore account-synchronized bookmarks, extensions, apps, and other preferences.
Create a secure sign-in method
A Chromebook PIN is local to that Chromebook; it does not change your Google Account password. Google currently requires at least six digits.
- Select the time in the bottom-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Open Privacy and security.
- Select Lock screen and sign in, then enter your Google Account password if requested.
- Select Set up beside PIN.
- Enter and confirm a PIN of six or more digits.
Use a non-obvious PIN rather than a birthday or repeated digits. If you forget it, sign in with the account password or use Google’s available recovery options. The current procedure and alternative Chromebook-password sign-in method are documented at Google’s PIN help page.

Install ChromeOS updates before adding lots of software
- Connect to Wi-Fi and plug in the charger if possible.
- Select the time, then Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS.
- Under Google ChromeOS, select Check for updates if the option appears.
- Allow the download to finish and select Restart when prompted.
ChromeOS checks automatically when it has an internet connection, but a restart is required to complete an update. Do not interrupt the process unnecessarily. Older Chromebooks eventually stop receiving new software updates, so check the device’s update-support information before relying on a used model. See Google’s update guidance.

- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
Check what synchronized—and move local files separately
After restarting, open Chrome and the Launcher and verify the items you expect:
- Chrome bookmarks, extensions, and (when enabled) history
- Google Drive, Gmail, Calendar, and Photos
- Chromebook wallpaper and other account-linked preferences
- Android apps, if this model supports Google Play
Synchronization is not the same as file migration. Files that were only in an old computer’s local Downloads folder do not automatically appear on the Chromebook.
Move files through Google Drive
- On the old computer, upload important files to Google Drive.
- Sign in to the Chromebook with the same Google Account.
- Open the Launcher and select Files.
- Select Google Drive in the left column, then open the relevant Drive or Computers location.
Move files with USB or external storage
- Copy the files from the old computer to a USB flash drive or external hard drive.
- Connect the device to the Chromebook.
- Open the Launcher, then Files.
- Select the external device in the left column and drag files to My files or upload them to Drive.
Keep a second backup before deleting anything. If ChromeOS cannot recognize a drive, reformatting may be offered; reformatting erases the drive. Windows and macOS applications also cannot simply be copied as executable programs—you may need a web, Android, or Linux alternative. Google’s file-transfer guide and Files and storage guidance describe supported approaches.
Install apps and choose optional environments
Web apps
Start with the web version of each service. Web apps usually require the least storage and integrate most naturally with ChromeOS. Pin frequently used sites from Chrome or the Launcher as needed.
Google Play and Android apps
Open the Launcher and look for Play Store. Sign in if prompted, install only the apps you need, and review their permissions. Play Store availability depends on the Chromebook model, ChromeOS configuration, and administrator policy; managed devices may provide a restricted managed Play Store. Android layouts, keyboard support, offline behavior, file access, and performance vary. See Google’s family and Android-app guidance and managed ChromeOS services documentation.

Linux development environment
Linux is optional. It is useful for developers and technical users, not for ordinary browsing, Google Docs, video calls, or streaming.
- Select the time, then Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS, then Developers.
- Beside Linux development environment, select Set up.
- Follow the prompts and wait; Google says setup can take 10 minutes or more.
- Use the Terminal app to install Linux software.
The environment is Debian-based, runs in a protected environment shared by Linux apps, consumes local storage, and may lack some hardware integration or acceleration. Work and school administrators may disable it. To update installed packages, Google documents:

One-click scans. No signup required.
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
See Google’s Linux instructions.
Connect Bluetooth, printers, displays, and storage
Bluetooth accessories
- Open Quick Settings from the time area.
- Open Bluetooth settings.
- Put the mouse, keyboard, headphones, or speaker into pairing mode.
- Select its name and confirm pairing.
Update ChromeOS before diagnosing a new accessory. If an accessory depends on a vendor app that has no ChromeOS version, some advanced features may be unavailable.
USB-C hubs, external monitors, USB4, and Thunderbolt
USB-C describes the connector shape, not guaranteed charging, display, data, USB4, or Thunderbolt capability. Check the exact Chromebook specifications and the accessory’s power-delivery, display-output, port, Ethernet, and high-speed-storage requirements before buying a dock or adapter.
For USB4 or Thunderbolt features, both the Chromebook and accessory must support the relevant standard. ChromeOS may block direct memory access from these accessories by default; review the security setting only when you understand the trade-off. Google’s compatibility guidance is at USB4 and Thunderbolt support.

External drives and printers
Use the Files app to inspect external storage and keep important data in Drive or a second backup. Android apps may need explicit permission to access an external drive. Printer setup and available features depend on the printer and ChromeOS support.
Add family members or use Guest mode
Regular users
- Sign out.
- Select Add person.
- Choose For personal use, For a child, or For work or school.
- Select Next and complete the prompts.
Each user gets separate files, apps, wallpaper, bookmarks, and account data. Google says the sign-in screen can show up to 19 accounts. For a child’s personal use, use a parent-supervised Google Account with Family Link; use a school account where school management requires it. Do not place the parent’s account inside the child’s profile if separation and supervision matter. See adding users and child setup.
Guest mode
Guest mode suits temporary borrowing, not a regular household member. It does not provide Play Store access or persistent preferences. When the guest session ends, its local files, cookies, website data, and browsing activity are deleted. Schools and employers may disable or control it. Details are in Google’s Guest mode documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set storage and backup habits
- Keep important documents in Google Drive or another cloud service.
- Maintain a separate external backup for irreplaceable files.
- Review and clean the local Downloads folder periodically.
- Remove large offline files and unused apps.
- Leave space available if you use Linux or Android apps.
Chromebook internal storage is limited, and downloaded files can be removed when space is needed. Cloud storage is easier to access from other devices and protects against a Chromebook failure; local storage remains useful for offline work and unreliable internet. Google documents storage management at Files and storage.
Do you need Google One?
Every Google Account includes up to 15 GB at no charge. Google One paid storage starts at 100 GB, with plans and features varying by location. Consider it if Drive, Gmail, and Photos are nearing the free quota, your household wants sharing, or you want plan-dependent Google support. It is not required to use a Chromebook. Current storage details are at Google One’s official page; Chromebook support benefits are described at Google’s Chromebook support page.

If the Chromebook was previously owned
Check for another user, confirm that the device is not still enrolled by a school or company, and back up anything you are authorized to keep. A managed device may require its administrator to reset or re-enroll it.
- Sign out.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R.
- Select Restart.
- Select Powerwash, then Continue.
- Complete setup with the intended owner account.
Powerwash erases local user data, including Downloads, settings, apps, and other hard-drive data. It does not erase Google Drive files or data on an external device. Read Google’s Powerwash instructions before proceeding, and check update support for an older model.
Troubleshoot setup problems
Wi-Fi will not connect
- Recheck the password and try another network or phone hotspot.
- Restart the Chromebook and router and move closer to the router.
- Check whether the network requires a browser sign-in page.
- Use another connection temporarily, finish setup, and update ChromeOS.
Google Account sign-in fails
Verify the complete email address and organization domain, password, two-step verification, and internet connection. A school or employer may restrict which accounts can sign in. Use Google’s sign-in troubleshooting flow linked from the setup help page.
An update is stuck or unavailable
- Restart the Chromebook.
- Use Wi-Fi or Ethernet rather than a phone connection if possible.
- Connect the charger.
- Return to Settings → About ChromeOS and check again.
- Contact the administrator if the Chromebook is managed.
Reset or recovery should be a last resort because recovery erases local storage. Follow Google’s update troubleshooting guidance.
An app, drive, Bluetooth device, or monitor does not work
Confirm that the model supports the feature, update ChromeOS, check app permissions, and test the accessory directly rather than through an unverified hub. Do not reformat an external drive until its contents are backed up.
Know the difference between reset options
- Restart: normal troubleshooting; does not erase data.
- Settings reset: can resolve configuration problems without necessarily deleting personal files, depending on the operation.
- Powerwash: factory reset that erases local data.
- Recovery: reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases local storage; reserve it for serious system problems.
Back up files before Powerwash or recovery. Google’s reset guidance is at Powerwash help.
