Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If Windows 10 freezes when you press Print Screen, first find out whether the whole PC locks up or just the screenshot interface. The key may start a Windows capture feature, or it may be claimed by Snipping Tool, a cloud-sync app, keyboard software, or a remapping utility. Test the capture methods separately before changing drivers or repairing Windows.
Use the steps below in order, starting with the least disruptive checks. Avoid registry edits and driver-updater utilities; they are not a sensible first response to a shortcut conflict.
Recover the PC safely if it is frozen
- Wait briefly in case Windows is processing the capture, then press Esc once.
- Try Ctrl + Alt + Delete. If the security screen appears, open Task Manager or choose a restart option.
- If the entire computer remains unresponsive, hold the physical power button only as a last resort. A forced shutdown can discard unsaved work.
- After restarting, save open work and test Print Screen before launching your usual screenshot and keyboard utilities.
A frozen Snipping Tool window is different from a locked display, mouse, and keyboard. A blue screen, black screen, or unexpected restart is also a broader system crash, not just a screenshot shortcut failure.
Identify which screenshot method triggers the freeze
Windows supports several capture paths. Run each test separately so you can identify whether the physical key, the capture app, or the save path is involved.

| Test | Expected behavior | What a failure suggests |
|---|---|---|
| PrtScn, then open Paint and press Ctrl + V | Copies the full screen to the clipboard; it does not necessarily create a file. [Microsoft documentation](https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/Office/copy-the-window-or-screen-contents) | If pasting works, the screenshot was captured even if no file appeared. If the key freezes Windows, investigate its mapping, capture software, or keyboard. |
| Alt + PrtScn, then paste into Paint | Copies the active window to the clipboard. [Microsoft documentation](https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/Office/copy-the-window-or-screen-contents) | If only this path fails, note whether a particular application or window is involved. |
| Windows + PrtScn | Saves a full-screen capture in Pictures > Screenshots on supported configurations. [Microsoft shortcut guide](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/keyboard-shortcut-for-print-screen-601210c0-b3a9-7b58-bc40-bae4dcf5f108) | If it freezes while plain PrtScn works, the save location, cloud-folder integration, or shortcut handling may be involved. |
| Windows + Shift + S | Opens the screen-snipping overlay. [Microsoft Snipping Tool guide](https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/Windows/Apps/use-snipping-tool-to-capture-screenshots) | If the overlay itself hangs, investigate Snipping Tool, graphics drivers, Windows components, or overlay software. |
| Open Snipping Tool from Start and select New | Starts a capture without using the physical Print Screen key. | If this also freezes, the app or a Windows dependency is a stronger suspect than the key itself. |
| Use the on-screen keyboard to trigger Print Screen, if available | Sends the key through Windows without pressing the physical keyboard key. | If this works but the physical key does not, focus on the keyboard, its firmware, remapping, or vendor software. |
A short delay lasting a few seconds may indicate a busy or conflicting capture utility. If the whole PC locks with multiple capture methods, treat it as a system stability problem.
Close screenshot apps and check for hotkey conflicts
More than one program can listen for Print Screen. Possible contenders include Snipping Tool or Snip & Sketch, OneDrive, Dropbox, ShareX, Greenshot, Snagit, Logitech Options or Logi Options+, Microsoft PowerToys Keyboard Manager, gaming-keyboard software, laptop hotkey utilities, and remote-desktop or virtual-machine software. Their presence alone does not prove they caused the freeze.
- Quit screenshot, cloud-sync, overlay, and keyboard-mapping apps from the notification area near the clock.
- Open Task Manager > Startup and temporarily disable the relevant nonessential startup entries.
- Restart Windows and test plain PrtScn, then the other capture methods.
- If the freeze stops, re-enable or launch the programs one at a time, testing after each, until the conflict returns.
- Keep the conflicting app disabled, change its screenshot hotkey, or assign it a different capture action.
Microsoft Community troubleshooting has identified OneDrive, Dropbox, Snipping Tool, and keyboard drivers as possible factors, but that is troubleshooting guidance rather than proof of a universal cause. [Microsoft Community discussion](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/3204198/print-screen-button-not-working-how-can-i-fix-it)
Check OneDrive without relying on an obsolete setting
Microsoft says the former OneDrive setting to save screenshots automatically is no longer available. Screenshot backup now depends on whether the Pictures folder is included in OneDrive folder backup. If a screenshot is missing, first paste a plain PrtScn capture into Paint, then check Pictures > Screenshots and the capture app’s own save location. [Microsoft OneDrive guidance](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/onedrive/save-screenshots-to-onedrive-automatically)

Correct a Logitech Options+ mapping
Logitech says Logi Options+ version 1.86 changed the behavior of its Screen Capture action; it no longer behaved like a raw Print Screen keycode. Logitech added a separate Print Screen action for traditional behavior. If you use an affected Logitech device:
- Open Logi Options+ and select the keyboard or device.
- Open Keys or Buttons, then select the physical screenshot key.
- Choose Print Screen, rather than the newer Screen Capture action, and apply the change.
- Restart the application or Windows if the mapping does not take effect immediately.
This is a specific Logi Options+ behavior, not a general incompatibility affecting every Logitech keyboard. A Microsoft Community thread also describes a device-specific case where a Logitech key was mapped to Windows + Shift + S, launching the snipping path unexpectedly. [Logitech release information](https://support.logi.com/hc/en-ch/articles/29599461716887-Logi-Options-1-86-Print-Screen-changes) · [Microsoft Community thread](https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/microsoft-screenshot-tool-disable/c3fa788d-2e0d-4759-9402-23f43b637594)
Change or bypass the Print Screen capture setting
Some Windows configurations use Print Screen to open screen snipping instead of performing the traditional clipboard capture. In Windows 10, the option may appear under Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard, but labels and locations vary by build and language. Search Settings for Print Screen, screen capture, or Snipping Tool. If turning on the option triggers the freeze, turn it off and use another capture method. Microsoft documents the available shortcuts and Snipping Tool behavior. [Print Screen shortcuts](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/keyboard-shortcut-for-print-screen-601210c0-b3a9-7b58-bc40-bae4dcf5f108) · [Snipping Tool](https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/Windows/Apps/use-snipping-tool-to-capture-screenshots)
- Windows + Shift + S: choose a region or other available snip type.
- Windows + PrtScn: save a full-screen capture in Pictures > Screenshots on supported configurations.
- PrtScn, then Ctrl + V in Paint: use the traditional clipboard route.
- Snipping Tool from Start: launch the app directly, without relying on the physical key.
Test the keyboard, Fn key, and connection
Laptop keyboards may require Fn + PrtScn, an Fn Lock setting, or a manufacturer-specific hotkey mode. On devices without a dedicated Print Screen key, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative. - Test with and without Fn, and check whether Fn Lock is enabled.
- Compare the physical key with the on-screen keyboard.
If a second keyboard works normally, start with the original keyboard, receiver, firmware, or its configuration app rather than Windows repair commands. Microsoft’s general input-device guidance also recommends testing the device on another PC and using Windows or the manufacturer’s official driver support. [Microsoft keyboard troubleshooting](https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/Windows/Hardware/input-devices/mouse-and-keyboard-problems-in-windows)
Update relevant drivers and keyboard software
If the keyboard tests point away from a physical fault, check the keyboard or HID driver, graphics driver, chipset and motherboard drivers, laptop hotkey package, and any relevant keyboard firmware or vendor software. Use Windows Update, Device Manager, or the PC or peripheral manufacturer’s official support page. Avoid third-party driver-updater programs, which are unnecessary for this diagnosis and can introduce incompatible drivers.
Consider rolling back a driver only when the problem began immediately after an update and Device Manager offers a rollback option. Otherwise, use the manufacturer’s current package that supports your Windows 10 edition and hardware.
Find background conflicts with a clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with a reduced set of third-party services and startup programs. It can help when Print Screen works after a restart but starts freezing after background software loads. Microsoft describes clean restarts as a way to isolate software conflicts. Use these built-in repairs if the issue persists across keyboards or screenshot paths and software conflicts have been ruled out. Open Command Prompt as administrator, run DISM first, wait for it to finish, then run SFC:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends this order. Let SFC reach 100 percent before closing Command Prompt; DISM can take several minutes. [Microsoft DISM and SFC instructions](https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/Windows/Experience/backup-recovery/using-system-file-checker-in-windows)
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”: SFC did not find system-file corruption.
- SFC repaired files: restart Windows and test again.
- SFC could not repair some files: run DISM again, review the CBS log, and consider Safe Mode or a repair installation.
- DISM fails: record the exact error rather than trying arbitrary commands from forum posts.
Microsoft notes that damaged system files can contribute to Windows features failing, unresponsiveness, and freezing; system-file repair will not fix a defective keyboard or graphics card. Investigate a whole-PC lockup
If the screen, mouse, and keyboard all stop responding—or Windows shows a blue screen, black screen, or restart—look beyond the screenshot shortcut. Possible areas include a display-driver failure, GPU overlay, memory instability, overheating, failing storage, USB or wireless-keyboard hardware, firmware, or a broader Windows fault.
- Reliability Monitor: search Start for “Reliability Monitor” and inspect failures recorded at the time of the lockup.
- Event Viewer: check Windows Logs > System and Application for display-driver, application, or hardware errors around the incident.
- Safe Mode: test whether the problem occurs with a reduced driver and service set. If it does not, a normal-startup driver or service becomes more likely.
- After reboot: check Task Manager for unusual CPU, memory, disk, or GPU activity, and note any recent driver or peripheral changes.
- Graphics software: disable overlays and test a stable manufacturer-supplied graphics driver rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same package.
If the PC freezes with several keyboards, across multiple capture methods, and after a clean boot, it is no longer a simple key-mapping issue. Hardware diagnosis or broader Windows repair may be needed.
Use a temporary screenshot alternative
While isolating the fault, use a capture route that passes the tests above: Windows + Shift + S for a selected-area capture, Windows + PrtScn for a saved full-screen image on supported configurations, or plain PrtScn followed by Ctrl + V in Paint. If the physical key is the only trigger, the on-screen keyboard may help determine whether a temporary software route works. Do not install another capture utility until you have checked its hotkey; a new global binding can create another conflict.
When to seek service or move on from Windows 10
Seek hardware help or broader system diagnosis if the PC hard-locks with every capture method, freezes during ordinary use, reports disk or memory errors, repeatedly resets its display driver, or remains unstable after the isolation and repair steps above.
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. The OS continues to run, but ordinary technical support, feature updates, and security updates have ended unless the device is covered by an applicable extended-support program. Microsoft recommends moving an eligible PC to Windows 11, replacing incompatible hardware, or checking applicable Extended Security Updates options. End of support does not by itself explain a Print Screen freeze.
