Kingsoft Office unveiled WPS Office 2020 in New Delhi on August 28, 2019—not in calendar year 2020. The edition’s main platform milestone was the addition of macOS support, alongside Writer, Presentation, Spreadsheets and PDF tools for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. It was positioned as a freemium, cross-platform alternative to Microsoft Office.
The launch was described as a global debut in India. That wording does not mean WPS Office had no Indian users before the event: Kingsoft representatives said the company already had more than 23 million monthly active users in India, a company-reported figure rather than an independently audited measurement.
What exactly did Kingsoft launch?
Kingsoft Office held its WPS Office 2020 global launch event in New Delhi on August 28, 2019. Contemporary reports covered the announcement as a major expansion of the WPS suite, especially because a Mac version filled a significant gap in Kingsoft’s platform lineup. Gadgets 360 reported the launch and its freemium positioning, while The Times of India described the platform and office-suite components.
“2020” was the product edition name. It was not the year in which the product was introduced. The event was presented as a global launch in India and as part of Kingsoft’s effort to expand in a strategically important market.

Why India mattered to Kingsoft
Kingsoft representatives described India as the company’s largest market after China. They said WPS had more than 23 million monthly active users in India and aimed to reach 40 million Indian users by the end of 2019. Those numbers were company claims and targets, not independently verified market measurements. The growth objective was reported by The Economic Times.
That context makes “introduced in India” easy to misread. The New Delhi event was a formal product and market push, not necessarily WPS Office’s first availability to Indian users. “Launched,” “unveiled” or “made its global debut” is more accurate than saying the software first entered India at that event. Office-file compatibility
WPS marketed the suite as compatible with common Microsoft Office formats, including PowerPoint-related workflows. Compatibility should not be treated as perfect equivalence with Word, Excel or PowerPoint. Files involving macros, advanced formulas, specialist add-ins, embedded fonts, complex layouts or unusual media can render or behave differently between applications.
Freemium access
The launch model provided basic productivity use without payment while reserving some capabilities for a Premium tier. “Free” therefore did not mean that every function was free. The clearest documented addition was macOS support. Contemporary coverage treated the Mac release as the remaining major platform gap in Kingsoft’s portfolio. WPS Office 2020’s practical advantages were a lower entry cost, mobile and desktop reach, integrated PDF functions and a familiar office-suite structure. It was not automatically a complete Microsoft Office replacement for every user. An offline workflow may be preferable for sensitive files.
