Some OnePlus users report that ODialer does not play Google Phone’s spoken recording notice when it is the active default dialer. The result depends on the exact model, firmware, region, carrier, Android release and app version—and recording another person may require consent under local law.
What ODialer is
ODialer is a ColorOS dialer published on Google Play by HeyTap. Its listing describes recent-call management, contacts, speed dial, manual recording and automatic recording. The listed minimum requirement is Android 12. The listing had more than 10 million downloads and an update dated October 23, 2025 when checked.
Install it only from the official Google Play listing, where the publisher is identified as ColorOS. The support contact shown there is [email protected].
Does it record without Google Phone’s announcement?
The official listing confirms recording controls but does not promise “silent,” “stealth” or announcement-free recording. OnePlus community reports and third-party demonstrations describe configurations in which ODialer records without Google Phone’s spoken disclosure. Those reports are not a guarantee for every phone.

Google’s Phone app documentation says that supported recordings announce the start of recording to both parties, and that availability varies by device, carrier, country and region. ODialer may behave differently because it is a different dialer implementation; it should not be described as a hack that bypasses Android privacy controls.
Reports indicate that behavior can change with the handset model, OxygenOS, ColorOS or realme UI build, sales region, carrier, default-dialer setting and software updates. Community threads also describe recording disappearing or stopping after updates: default-dialer report, feature-removal report and OnePlus 12R dialer discussion.
Which phones and regions are compatible?
ODialer is associated with Oppo, Realme and selected OnePlus software configurations, but brand compatibility is not enough. Android 12 is the listed minimum, not a promise that recording will work on every Android 12, 13, 14, 15 or 16 build. A phone may install the app while lacking a working recording control, and a visible control does not prove that both sides of a call will be captured.

Availability also varies geographically. OPPO says that ODialer may not be preinstalled in some countries and regions and may instead be downloaded from an app store in its Reno12 launch material. Google likewise documents country and region restrictions for call recording. Check the Play Store listing directly on the phone rather than relying on an old APK tutorial.
How to install and enable ODialer
- Open Google Play Store and search for ODialer, or open the official listing directly.
- Confirm that the publisher is ColorOS and that the phone runs Android 12 or newer.
- Install and open ODialer. Accept only the permissions needed for phone calls, contacts and microphone access.
- When prompted, set ODialer as the system’s default phone app. The exact menu wording varies by Android skin.
- Open ODialer settings and look for Call recording. Available labels and switches differ by version.
- Choose manual recording or an available automatic option. The Play listing confirms both capabilities, but it does not publish one universal menu path.
- Make a permitted, non-sensitive test call before depending on the feature.
Historical OnePlus instructions generally require ODialer to be the default dialer and Google Phone to stop handling calls. Treat that as a reported workaround, not an official procedure for every device. Avoid disabling Google Phone unless necessary: doing so can affect caller ID, spam protection, visual voicemail, call screening or other phone functions.
How to verify a recording
- Confirm that ODialer, rather than Google Phone, handled the call.
- Check whether an in-call recording control appeared.
- Verify that a recording file was created and that playback contains both sides.
- Test incoming and outgoing cellular calls separately.
- Repeat with speakerphone, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi calling if those routes matter to you.
- Check whether the recording remains available after a reboot.
Do not assume a particular storage folder. User reports suggest recordings may be reachable from the dialer call log or a recorder app, but the official listing does not document a universal location. One example is reported in this OnePlus discussion.

Common failures and fixes
ODialer does not appear in Google Play
Possible causes include an unsupported Android version, regional Play profile, device incompatibility or carrier/manufacturer restrictions. Check the Android version, open the listing from the phone, update Google Play Store and Play Services, and verify the publisher. Do not make an APK mirror your first choice; unknown packages create authenticity and update risks. A historical availability complaint appears in Google’s Play support forum.
The recording control is missing
Confirm ODialer is the default phone app and has the required permissions. Check region, carrier and software updates, and make sure the call is a normal cellular call rather than a third-party VoIP call. An update may have removed or restricted the capability.
The file is silent or captures one side
Microphone permission, Bluetooth or headset routing, Android audio restrictions, carrier configuration and the active dialer can all affect capture. Test speakerphone, wired audio, Bluetooth, incoming calls and outgoing calls independently. None of these tests guarantees a fix.

Automatic recording captures too much
A Google Play user review reports that selecting unknown-number recording resulted in broader incoming and outgoing recording. That is an individual report, but it warrants checking every recording toggle. Turn automatic recording off, recheck settings, update the app, and clear cache before clearing data. Preserve needed files first. Contact [email protected] if the problem persists.
Call controls become unreliable
Reviews mention missing ongoing-call notifications, visual glitches and difficulty returning to or ending calls. If controls become unreliable, restore the original phone app as the default and uninstall or disable ODialer.

Community reports describe recording restrictions on some non-Indian ROMs and changes after Android updates, but reports are anecdotal and sometimes contradictory. Android 14 and later changes are discussed in this user report; regional restrictions are discussed in another. Do not change the phone’s region solely to unlock recording: updates, payments, warranty support, language, emergency functions and other regional services may be affected.

Privacy and legal considerations
A missing announcement does not make a recording legal. Laws differ by jurisdiction: some require one participant’s consent, while others require consent from everyone. The relevant rules may depend on where each participant is located. For business, employment, medical, legal or interstate calls, disclose the recording and obtain consent when uncertain; consult the applicable law or a lawyer for a specific situation.
ODialer’s Play description tells users to follow local law and obtain consent where required. OPPO’s app-privacy information and privacy notice describe permissions, device and usage information, logs and other data categories that can depend on the service and settings. Google Play currently displays “no data shared with third parties” and “no data collected” for the listing, but that is a developer-provided disclosure, not an independent security audit.
- Review microphone, phone, contacts and storage-related permissions.
- Protect the handset with a passcode or biometric lock.
- Keep recordings out of unprotected shared folders.
- Delete files that are no longer needed and understand any cloud backup policy.
- Avoid recording confidential financial, medical or employment conversations without a legitimate reason and consent.

Alternatives
Built-in Oppo, Realme or OnePlus dialer
Use the native dialer when the phone’s own firmware officially enables lawful recording. It is usually the lowest-friction option, although regional and model differences still apply.

Third-party recording apps
Do not assume a third-party app will work on modern Android. Many depend on accessibility services, speakerphone capture, root access or region-specific workarounds. Before installing, check the developer, permissions, subscription terms, data storage, Android compatibility and whether both sides are captured. No universal solution follows from a store description alone.
Bottom line
ODialer is a legitimate HeyTap/ColorOS dialer with officially listed manual and automatic recording for Android 12 and newer. On some OnePlus, Realme and Oppo configurations, users report recording without Google Phone’s spoken announcement, but that behavior is neither universally supported nor an assurance of covert or lawful recording. Install from Google Play, make it the default phone app, test both sides of a permitted call, and keep consent and privacy requirements ahead of the missing announcement.
