In Opera for Chromebook, open Settings → Advanced, find VPN under Features or Privacy & security, and enable it. Then click the blue VPN badge beside the address bar and switch the connection on. This protects traffic from Opera, not automatically every app on your Chromebook.
Before you start
- These instructions apply to Opera for Chromebook, not Chrome, Opera GX, or Opera’s mobile apps.
- If Opera is not installed, open the Chromebook’s Google Play Store, search for Opera, and install the Chromebook-compatible browser when available. Opera also provides a download route at https://www.opera.com/download.
- Opera describes its Chromebook browser and built-in VPN at https://www.opera.com/opera/chromebook.
Opera’s menu labels vary by version. Its current documentation shows both Settings → Advanced → Features → VPN and Settings → Advanced → Privacy & security → VPN; check both sections if necessary.
Turn on Opera VPN on your Chromebook
- Open Opera.
- Open the Opera menu and select Settings.
- Open Advanced.
- Select Features or Privacy & security.
- Find the VPN section and turn on Enable VPN.
- Look beside the combined address-and-search bar for the blue VPN badge.
- Click the badge and turn on its switch. Enabling the setting only makes the feature available; the badge switch controls whether Opera is actively using it.
- Leave the virtual location set to Optimal, or select one of the regions shown in the panel.
Opera documents the setting and badge controls at https://help.opera.com/en/latest/security-and-privacy/ and https://help.opera.com/en/latest/features/.
How to check that it is working
- The blue VPN badge is visible beside the address bar.
- Clicking it shows an on/off control and VPN information such as transferred data, virtual location, and virtual IP address.
- You can compare your reported IP address before and after activation using a reputable IP-checking website. The displayed region may not exactly match the region name you selected.
A VPN changes the IP address and apparent location that websites see and encrypts Opera’s connection to the VPN service, according to Opera’s documentation. It does not make you anonymous: accounts, cookies, browser fingerprinting, and other signals can still identify you.

Choose or change the virtual location
- Click the VPN badge.
- Open the virtual-location selector.
- Keep Optimal for Opera’s automatic choice, or select an available region.
Opera’s general help page lists broad free-VPN regions such as Europe, Asia, and The Americas. The exact choices depend on your Opera version, country, and service availability, so use the locations actually displayed in your browser rather than expecting a particular city or country. Changing location can alter search results and other location-sensitive content.
Turn Opera VPN off
For the quickest change, click the blue VPN badge and switch the VPN off. You can also return to Settings → Advanced → Features or Privacy & security → VPN and disable Enable VPN. Opera’s concise enable/disable guidance is also available at https://help.opera.com/en/faq/.
Does Opera VPN protect the whole Chromebook?
No. Opera’s free VPN is a browser feature. It covers browsing traffic handled by Opera; it does not automatically route traffic from Chrome, Android apps, Linux apps, or other Chromebook services through the same connection.
| Traffic | Covered by Opera’s free browser VPN? |
|---|---|
| Pages and downloads in Opera | Yes, while the VPN badge switch is on |
| Chrome tabs | No |
| Android apps | No |
| Linux apps | No |
| Whole Chromebook | No; configure a separate ChromeOS-compatible VPN |
For device-wide coverage, Google documents built-in VPN connections, VPN apps from the Chrome Web Store, Android VPN apps on supported Chromebooks, optional Always-on VPN, and Block connections without VPN at https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/1282338/set-up-virtual-private-networks-vpns. Those settings are separate from Opera’s toggle. Running both can create slower speeds, conflicting locations, or connection problems.

Why the VPN option is missing or not working
You are using Chrome or another Opera product
The VPN setting will not appear in Chrome. Confirm that you opened Opera for Chromebook rather than Chrome, Opera GX, or a mobile Opera app.
The settings path is different
Search Opera Settings for VPN, then inspect both Advanced → Features and Advanced → Privacy & security. Opera’s documentation currently uses both labels.
Opera is out of date
Update Opera through its normal Chromebook app/update mechanism, then restart it. Opera says its browser updates automatically when a new version is available, although a managed device may apply updates differently. See https://help.opera.com/en/latest/.
The Chromebook is managed
A school or employer can restrict app installation, browser features, network access, or VPN use. Contact the administrator if the device is managed; Google specifically directs managed-Chromebook users to their administrator for VPN problems.

Another network tool is interfering
Try this practical recovery sequence:
- Turn off another VPN or proxy.
- Disconnect from Wi-Fi and reconnect.
- Close and reopen Opera.
- Switch back to Optimal and test another website.
- Restart the Chromebook.
- Update Opera and ChromeOS.
- Test on a phone hotspot or another network.
If it works on another network, the original Wi-Fi network may be blocking or interfering with VPN traffic.
The badge appears but will not connect
- Turn the badge switch off and on again.
- Use Optimal instead of a manually selected region.
- Close private tabs and retry in a normal browsing window.
- Temporarily disable extensions that modify traffic, DNS, privacy settings, or the user agent.
- Clear Opera’s cached data only as a later step; clearing cookies can sign you out of websites.
Free Opera VPN versus Opera VPN Pro
| Option | Coverage | Cost signal | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Opera free VPN | Opera browser traffic | Free | Simple, occasional privacy while browsing in Opera | Not Chromebook-wide; broad regions |
| ChromeOS VPN app or built-in connection | Potentially system- or app-wide, depending on configuration | Varies | Whole-device, school, or workplace requirements | Requires separate setup and provider/configuration |
| Opera VPN Pro | Opera describes it as covering the entire device and up to six Android and desktop devices | Pricing page displayed $48/year ($4/month equivalent), $30 every six months ($5/month equivalent), or $8 monthly on August 18, 2026; 30-day money-back guarantee displayed | Users needing broader coverage and more locations | Paid; verify supported-device behavior for your Chromebook configuration |
See Opera’s comparison at https://www.opera.com/features/vpn, product details at https://www.opera.com/features/vpn-pro, and the pricing page at https://www.opera.com/features/vpn-pro/vpn-pricing-plan. VPN Pro is unnecessary if you only want the free browser VPN and does not replace a required enterprise ChromeOS configuration.
What Opera VPN does not protect against
- Malware, phishing, malicious extensions, or unsafe downloads.
- Information you voluntarily submit to a website.
- Identification through signed-in accounts, cookies, or browser fingerprinting.
- Traffic from apps outside Opera unless you separately configure ChromeOS VPN protection.
Opera describes its service as free and unlimited and publishes its own no-log and security explanations. Those are Opera’s stated policies and claims, not a guarantee of complete anonymity or unlimited performance in every situation. Its published security explanation is at https://blogs.opera.com/security/2026/05/opera-vpn-is-safe/.

Can I choose a country?
Choose from the regions and locations shown in your VPN panel. Free VPN availability is commonly presented as broad regions, and exact choices can change.
Should I use Opera VPN and another Chromebook VPN together?
Usually not unless you have a specific reason. Two VPN layers can conflict, slow connections, or show unexpected locations.
