A wrong Windows 11 clock can be caused by an incorrect time zone, failed internet synchronization, Windows Time (W32Time), company policy, a dual-boot UTC conflict, or a failing real-time clock (RTC). Start with Settings > Time & language > Date & time; use command-line diagnostics only if the built-in sync fails.
Try the quick fix first: verify the time zone and sync
A clock that is exactly one or more hours wrong usually indicates a time-zone or daylight-saving setting, not a failed time server. A difference of seconds or minutes is more consistent with synchronization, network, service, or hardware-clock issues. Windows documents the relevant controls on its Date & time settings page.
- Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically.
- Check Time zone. If automatic detection selected the wrong zone, turn Set time zone automatically off and choose the correct zone manually.
- Where available, enable Adjust for daylight saving time automatically.
- Use Sync now in the synchronization section. The wording or exact placement can vary slightly between Windows 11 builds.
- Wait for the last-successful-synchronization information to update, then check the clock again.
Do not correct the displayed time manually while leaving the time zone wrong. That can make the clock look right temporarily while calendar entries, scheduled tasks, authentication and event logs remain inconsistent.
If Sync now fails, check the connection before changing settings
Windows Time uses Network Time Protocol (NTP). Ordinary web browsing can work while NTP is blocked, because NTP requires UDP port 123.

- Confirm that the PC has normal internet access and complete any captive-portal sign-in.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN and retry. Corporate VPNs and firewalls may block external NTP.
- Try another network, such as a phone hotspot, if policy permits.
- Check that DNS can resolve the configured time server.
Microsoft lists DNS failures, unreachable peers, blocked UDP 123 and domain-hierarchy problems among the causes of the “no time data available” error (Microsoft troubleshooting guidance).
Check the Windows Time service without forcing a permanent startup change
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Time.
- Make sure it is not disabled. If necessary, start or restart it, then try synchronization again.
A workgroup PC may legitimately show the service as stopped when it is not actively synchronizing. Windows can use trigger-start behavior, and domain-joined and workgroup computers have different startup designs (Microsoft’s workgroup explanation). Setting the service to Automatic is therefore not a universal fix and may interfere with the normal task-based behavior.
Diagnose synchronization with w32tm
Open Command Prompt as administrator. Microsoft identifies w32tm as the preferred command-line tool for configuring and troubleshooting Windows Time (Windows Time tools and settings).

If w32tm /resync reports that no time data was available, do not simply repeat it. Investigate DNS, UDP 123, firewall or VPN filtering, the selected peer, and (on managed PCs) the domain time hierarchy.

Only consider changing the peer on a standalone, non-domain-joined PC after checking the basics. Microsoft’s policy examples use time.windows.com as the default NTP server for standalone configurations; that does not mean every computer currently uses it.

w32tm /resyncChanging servers is not automatically an accuracy improvement. A provider must be reachable from your network, and a corporate firewall may permit only an internal source. If the selected server is unavailable, troubleshooting becomes harder. Never apply this override casually to a domain-joined PC.

Work or school computers: check policy before changing anything
A domain-joined Windows computer normally synchronizes through the Active Directory time hierarchy. The forest-root PDC emulator commonly obtains the authoritative time, while member computers use domain controllers. Group Policy can override local NTP settings, and users may not have permission to change the effective configuration (how Windows Time works).
- Run
w32tm /query /source. - Run
w32tm /query /configuration. - If the source is a domain controller or the configuration is policy-controlled, contact IT.
Do not force a public NTP server, edit the registry or disable policy on a managed device without the administrator’s approval. External UDP 123 may be intentionally blocked.

If the clock changes after dual-booting Windows and Linux
Windows and Linux can interpret the motherboard’s RTC differently: one may treat it as local time while the other treats it as UTC. The visible clock then jumps by the local UTC offset after switching operating systems, even though internet synchronization is functioning.

- Confirm that the jump occurs specifically after booting the other operating system.
- Set the correct time zone in both systems.
- Choose one RTC convention and configure both operating systems consistently, following your Linux distribution’s dual-boot guidance and the computer manufacturer’s firmware documentation.
A registry value sometimes suggested in community discussions is shown below. It is an advanced, community-reported workaround, not a general Microsoft recommendation; inconsistent firmware or Linux settings can create new errors.

It is wrong only until Windows gets online
This usually points to delayed synchronization, startup network availability or Windows Time behavior. Check the connection, service and w32tm /query /status output.

The BIOS/UEFI clock also loses time
Enter BIOS/UEFI and compare its clock with Windows. If the firmware clock returns to an old date after power is removed, Windows settings cannot repair the underlying retention problem. A desktop may need an RTC/CMOS coin-cell battery, while a laptop requires model-specific service. A failed RTC circuit or motherboard can produce the same symptom.
Dell explains that the battery-backed RTC preserves date and time while the computer is off, and that reset procedures vary by model (desktop guidance; laptop guidance). Follow the exact service manual before opening a system. An RTC reset can clear firmware settings such as boot order or Secure Boot configuration on some computers.
When to contact the manufacturer or a technician
- BIOS/UEFI time resets or the firmware reports a CMOS/RTC error.
- The clock remains wrong after a correctly installed replacement battery.
- Firmware settings repeatedly disappear.
- The computer is under warranty.
- You are not comfortable opening a desktop or laptop.
Small offsets between synchronization events can be normal, especially with intermittent connectivity, inaccurate hardware clocks or heavy resource contention. Windows adjusts the clock through its time service rather than requiring a continuously open connection. Do not promise atomic-clock accuracy from an ordinary Windows 11 PC; Microsoft’s highest-accuracy figures apply to specially configured server and domain environments (Microsoft’s technical explanation).
