Spotify Error Code 17 is not one single problem. In the desktop app it usually appears either as a “A firewall may be blocking Spotify” or proxy message, or as “Spotify could not be started.” Match the wording and timing first, then work through connection checks, proxy and firewall settings, and only then reinstall Spotify. This order protects your account data and avoids obsolete fixes.
Identify which Error 17 you have
“A firewall may be blocking Spotify”
This is the connection or sign-in variant. Check Spotify’s offline mode, your internet connection, proxy or VPN settings, firewall exceptions, and restrictions on work, school, hotel, or public networks. Spotify has not published a definitive, universal cause for Error 17; the wording itself points to possible network filtering rather than proving that the firewall is responsible. Historical community reports show this exact message and its proxy reference (Spotify Community report).
“Spotify could not be started”
This is an installation or launch variant. A damaged local installation, a blocked executable, endpoint-security software, or Windows application-control policy can prevent the desktop program from opening. If the message appears immediately after installation, follow the installation branch below rather than repeatedly changing network settings.
Use these tests before changing anything
| Test | What the result suggests |
|---|---|
| Web player and mobile app also fail | A wider account, service, or network problem is possible. |
| Web player works but the desktop app fails | Focus on the desktop app, proxy, firewall, cache, or installation. |
| Spotify works on a phone hotspot but not home or work Wi-Fi | Network filtering, DNS, router, or firewall rules are likely involved. |
| Only one Windows account is affected | The user profile or a per-user policy may be damaged or restricted. |
| The error appears immediately after installation | Investigate the executable, installer package, permissions, or security policy. |
Quick connection checks
- Check other sites and apps. Open several unrelated websites. If they fail too, restore the internet connection before troubleshooting Spotify.
- Try the web player. If it plays normally, your account and Spotify’s service are reachable, so concentrate on the desktop client.
- Restart Wi-Fi. Toggle Wi-Fi off and on. Restart the router if every device has an unreliable connection.
- Try another network. Use another Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot. Spotify notes that offices, schools, and other shared networks may restrict access; ask the network administrator when an alternate connection works (Spotify’s offline troubleshooting guidance).
Turn off Offline mode
In the desktop app, look for Offline mode under the app’s File menu on Windows or the Spotify menu in the macOS menu bar. Turn it off, then restart Spotify. Menu placement can vary by desktop build. Spotify documents this check alongside its connection and firewall recommendations (Spotify — Spotify is offline).

Check proxy and VPN settings
- Open Spotify’s sign-in or connection screen and locate its Proxy settings option if it is displayed.
- If you do not intentionally use a proxy, choose the equivalent of No proxy or the default automatic setting.
- Save the setting and restart Spotify.
- If the computer belongs to an employer or school, leave a required proxy in place and ask the administrator instead.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or privacy-security suite as a diagnostic test. Re-enable it immediately after testing.
Spotify’s proxy labels and availability differ between desktop versions. Do not change Windows-wide proxy settings blindly when only Spotify is affected, and do not assume that “No proxy” is correct on a managed network.
Allow Spotify through the Windows firewall
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Firewall & network protection.
- Choose Allow an app through firewall.
- Select Change settings.
- Allow Spotify on the network type you actually use.
- If Spotify is not listed, select Allow another app and choose the official Spotify executable.
- Restart Spotify.
Allowing an app is safer than disabling the firewall. Third-party antivirus or endpoint-security software may control its own firewall and override Windows Firewall. Store and direct-download editions can use different executable paths, and a work or school administrator may control the rule. Spotify specifically recommends checking that the firewall has Spotify set as an exception (Spotify — Spotify is offline).

Reinstall Spotify on Windows
Standard reinstall
For Windows 10 and newer, Spotify’s current procedure is:
- Close Spotify.
- Open Settings > Apps > Apps & Features.
- Select Spotify, choose Uninstall, and complete the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Install Spotify again from the official Spotify reinstall page, using either the Microsoft Store or Spotify’s direct download.
If one official distribution fails, test the other. Neither source is universally “better”; using both can reveal an installer- or packaging-specific problem.

Clean reinstall when the error returns
A normal uninstall can leave configuration or cache data behind. Use Spotify’s current platform instructions rather than deleting arbitrary folders. On Windows, the linked support page contains the current procedure; folder locations and packaging can change, so do not run old internet commands without confirming that they apply to your build.
Reinstallation removes locally stored offline music and podcasts, which must be downloaded again. Playlists and library data are associated with your Spotify account and normally return after you sign in. Confirm that you know your login details before uninstalling (Spotify — Reinstalling your Spotify app).

Older Spotify Community discussions describe a launch failure in which an offline installer completed, but Windows reported that Spotify was blocked by Group Policy. One historical workaround moved Spotify from a user AppData location such as %AppData%Spotify into Program Files (community discussion). That advice is more than a decade old and targets older installers and Windows versions.

Do not make that move the default fix on Windows 10 or 11. Manual relocation can break shortcuts, updates, permissions, or security controls. First uninstall normally, restart, and test the Microsoft Store build. If Windows displays “blocked by administrator” or a Group Policy message, the appropriate fix may require an administrator to change application-control or endpoint-security policy. A separate historical report documents the “Spotify could not be started” wording (Spotify Community report).
Verify the repair
- Sign in and confirm that the home screen loads.
- Search for a track and play it.
- Test a playlist and, if relevant, start a new offline download.
- If you disabled a VPN or security feature for testing, turn it back on and retest.
When to stop troubleshooting
Contact Spotify through its support channels or Help Community when Error 17 remains after a clean reinstall, every desktop build fails while the web player works, or the issue affects multiple devices. Ask a network administrator for help when the problem occurs only on a managed network, firewall or proxy controls are locked, or you lack administrator rights. Include:
- The exact Error 17 wording and language.
- Your operating system and version.
- Whether Spotify came from the Microsoft Store or a direct download.
- Whether the web player and mobile app work.
- Whether another Wi-Fi network or hotspot works.
- Any VPN, antivirus, endpoint-security, or Group Policy message.
Spotify’s general playback guidance also recommends reinstalling and ensuring that firewall access is permitted (Spotify — Spotify not playing).
The Bottom Line
Use the message to choose the branch: firewall/proxy wording calls for network, proxy, VPN, and firewall checks; “Spotify could not be started” calls for an official reinstall and, if necessary, administrator help with application policy. Avoid permanent firewall changes and obsolete AppData relocation commands.
