Messenger Calls Not Working on Chrome? How to Fix Audio, Video, and Connection Problems

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Messenger calls can work in Chrome, but the browser, your operating system, or another app may block access to the microphone or camera. Start by allowing the devices for the Messenger or Facebook site, then reload the page and check that the correct devices are selected. If that does not help, use the symptom-based checks below to separate an audio, video, browser, network, or Messenger problem.

Try the fastest fixes first

  1. In Chrome, open messenger.com or Facebook, select the site-information icon to the left of the address bar, then choose Site settings. Set Microphone to Allow; allow Camera too if you need video.
  2. Return to the Messenger tab, reload it, and start a new call.
  3. Check that you are not muted, your headset is connected to the intended device, and system volume is on.
  4. Close other apps or browser tabs that might be using the microphone or camera.
  5. If the call still fails, quit and reopen Chrome. Then test another network or browser to narrow down the cause.

Chrome is listed by Meta among supported browsers for relevant Messenger and Facebook features, but support does not mean every feature works identically in every browser, account, or call type. Meta’s documentation also warns that other browsers may not show all chat history or may not allow calls in some end-to-end encrypted chats. Meta’s browser guidance and its Facebook video-calling guidance describe different browser-support contexts. Messenger in a browser is also distinct from the Messenger mobile app and from a call link opened in a browser.

Identify what is failing

Symptom Start by checking
You hear the other person, but they cannot hear you Microphone permission, operating-system access, mute controls, selected input device, or another app using the microphone.
They hear you, but you cannot hear them Speaker or headset selection, system volume, Bluetooth routing, browser-tab mute, or the other caller’s microphone.
Video is black or unavailable Camera permission, operating-system access, selected camera, physical privacy shutter, or another app using the camera.
The call will not start or ends immediately Browser support, a failed browser session, network conditions, or a Messenger-side issue.
The call button is missing Whether you are on the correct site, browser support for that feature, account or feature availability, and whether the contact can call in the app.
Chrome fails but another browser works Chrome permissions, extensions, site data, profile settings, or a browser-specific compatibility issue.
Only a group call fails Browser-specific group-call support; do not assume one-to-one and group calls have identical availability.

A missing call button is not usually evidence of a microphone problem: device permissions matter when a call tries to use the devices. Meta notes that feature availability can vary or be affected by account restrictions or bugs. Meta’s troubleshooting guidance explains how to report a feature problem after basic checks.

Allow the microphone and camera in Chrome

Change permission for the current site

  1. Open the Messenger or Facebook page where you are trying to call.
  2. Select the site-information icon beside the address bar, then select Site settings.
  3. Set Microphone to Allow. For video, set Camera to Allow as well.
  4. Return to the page, reload it, and start a new call.

Chrome says site-permission changes made through the site-information control save automatically. See Chrome’s site-permission instructions.

Find blocked permissions in Chrome Settings

If you cannot change the setting from the page, open Chrome’s More menu and go to Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings. Under Permissions, open Camera or Microphone. Find the Messenger or Facebook site in the blocked list and change it to Allow, or remove the saved exception so Chrome can ask again. As optional shortcuts, enter chrome://settings/content/camera or chrome://settings/content/microphone in the address bar.

If Chrome never asks

The site may already have a saved “Never allow” exception, Chrome may be on a different Messenger/Facebook domain than the one you changed, or the operating system or an administrator may be blocking access before the site can ask. Reset or remove the site’s permission exception, reload, and check the operating-system controls below. Chrome may also remove permissions from sites you have not used for a while. Avoid enabling camera and microphone access for every site when a site-specific exception will do. Chrome’s camera and microphone help covers the permission controls and device access.

Check operating-system privacy controls

Chrome’s permission is only one layer. Windows, macOS, or a managed Chromebook can separately prevent Chrome from using a camera or microphone.

  • Windows: Open the privacy settings for Microphone and Camera. Confirm that access is enabled for Chrome or desktop applications, as applicable to your Windows release.
  • macOS: Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, then review Microphone and Camera access for Chrome. After changing a permission, quit and reopen Chrome if access does not resume.
  • Chromebook: Check the device’s privacy controls as well as Chrome’s site permissions. On a school- or work-managed device, an administrator may control these settings.

Menu labels differ by operating-system version and device policy. Chrome says workplace or school administrators can restrict camera and microphone controls. Meta also recommends checking computer hardware settings and ensuring external Bluetooth microphones or headsets are powered on. Meta’s call troubleshooting steps cover device and caller checks.

Select the right input and output devices

Permission does not guarantee Chrome is using the device you expect. A laptop may expose an internal microphone alongside a USB headset; a monitor may have its own camera; Bluetooth devices and virtual audio tools can add still more choices.

  1. In Chrome, open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings.
  2. Open Microphone or Camera and use the device selector to choose the intended hardware.
  3. For sound coming from the other caller, check your operating-system sound output settings and choose the intended speakers or headset.
  4. Change one device at a time, then make a new call to see whether the symptom changes.

Also check physical controls: a closed camera shutter, a headset’s mute switch, a muted browser tab, or a Bluetooth headset connected to another device can make working hardware seem broken. Chrome documents its device selectors; Meta advises checking mute and hardware settings in its call troubleshooting guidance.

Close other apps using the camera or microphone

Quit video meetings and recording tools such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Skype, OBS, and camera apps. Close other browser tabs that are using audio or video, then try a new Messenger call. Chrome warns that another tab or application using a camera or microphone can prevent a site from starting recording. If you are unsure which app is holding the device, close likely candidates rather than changing several permissions at once. Chrome’s device troubleshooting guide describes this conflict.

Refresh the session, then test site data and extensions

Restart in a low-risk order

  1. Leave or cancel the failed call.
  2. Close the Messenger or Facebook tab.
  3. Quit Chrome completely, reopen it, and sign in again if needed.
  4. Start a new call. If the problem remains, restart the computer.

Meta recommends refreshing or reopening the page and restarting the computer; Chrome also recommends restarting the browser when troubleshooting device access. Meta’s steps and Chrome’s guide provide further context.

Clear site data if the page still behaves incorrectly

From the site-information menu for Messenger or Facebook, open site settings and delete or reset that site’s stored data if the option is available. Sign in again and test. This can clear a broken local session, but it is not proof of what caused the fault. It may sign you out and remove locally stored preferences; it does not delete Messenger conversations from Meta’s servers. Meta includes clearing browser data among its general troubleshooting steps. Read Meta’s browser troubleshooting guidance.

Use Incognito as a diagnostic test

Try a call in an Incognito window. If it works there, an extension, stored site data, or a saved permission in your regular profile may be involved. Ad blockers, script or privacy tools, WebRTC blockers, and corporate security extensions are possible suspects. Disable extensions selectively to test; do not leave security protections off as a permanent fix. Incognito may not reproduce your usual signed-in session, so treat the result as a clue, not a guarantee.

Test the network and the other caller

A page may load while a call still struggles. Try another Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot. If you use a VPN, briefly test without it; on a work, school, or hotel network, compare with a network you control. Ask the other participant to check their internet connection, microphone, speaker, mute state, and Bluetooth routing too. Meta recommends reconnecting to Wi-Fi or trying another network and checking the other caller’s setup. Its support material does not establish one universal speed threshold or a single firewall change for Messenger calls. See Meta’s network and caller checks.

If both people fail across different devices and networks, a Messenger-side problem, account restriction, or contact-specific issue becomes more plausible; these tests do not establish a live service outage. If only one contact or call type fails, compare with another contact or a one-to-one call before changing more device settings.

Update Chrome or compare with another browser

To check for a browser update, open Chrome’s More menu and select Help → About Google Chrome. Let Chrome check, install an update if offered, then relaunch and retry. Meta recommends updating or switching browsers when video calling fails, but its guidance does not specify one universal required Chrome version. Meta’s video-calling guidance and browser guidance explain its support recommendations.

A comparison can isolate the problem without proving Chrome is permanently incompatible:

  • Microsoft Edge: Meta lists Edge for relevant Facebook video calling and says it supports end-to-end encrypted Messenger/Facebook chats.
  • Opera: Meta lists Opera for Facebook video calling.
  • Firefox: Meta’s Facebook video-calling page says group calling is unavailable in Firefox, so it is not a universal replacement for every call type.
  • Messenger mobile app: A practical fallback if the desktop browser or computer hardware is the obstacle.

If a call works in another browser, investigate Chrome’s permissions, extensions, site data, or profile before concluding that Chrome itself is unsupported. Meta’s claims refer to particular web features, not identical behavior across every call mode.

Report a problem when the checks do not isolate it

Use Facebook or Messenger’s Help & Support → Report a Problem option where available if the issue persists after testing. Include the exact error message, whether audio, video, or call setup fails, whether it affects one contact or everyone, the site you used, your browser and operating system, and whether another browser or device works. Refreshing and trying another browser or device first helps distinguish a local setup problem from a suspected feature bug. Meta’s troubleshooting page discusses feature availability and reporting problems.
